New look inside cell nucleus could improve cancer diagnostics

Posted: Published on December 24th, 2013

Dec 23, 2013 by Daniel Stolte Thanks to a special imaging technique, the nucleus is visible here in green inside a plant cell. Credit: David Galbraith/BIO5 Researchers have successfully isolated and sequenced the entire messenger RNA the "genetic photocopies" contained in the nucleus of a single brain cell. This research, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, will help researchers better understand how organs function in health and disease and provide another stepping stone toward personalized medicine. Most cells in animals and plants contain a nucleus, which stores the cell's DNA. Since the DNA never leaves the nucleus, the information stored in the genetic material has to be copied before it can serve in its role as a blueprint for protein synthesis, which happens outside the nucleus. This is accomplished by transcribing sequences of the DNA code into strands of so-called "messenger" RNA. The entirety of messenger RNA at any given time is called the transcriptome; the entirety of DNA inside the nucleus is referred to as the genome. Transcriptomes tell researchers which genes are being actively transcribed at any given time, and therefore are indicative of a cell's identity and condition. A team of researchers … Continue reading

West Coast Stem Cell Clinic, TeleHealth, Now Offering PRP Therapy for Hip Arthritis Treatment

Posted: Published on December 24th, 2013

Orange County, California (PRWEB) December 23, 2013 The top stem cell therapy clinic in California, TeleHealth, is now offering PRP therapy for hip arthritis. The treatments are often able to delay or avoid the need for joint replacement, and are administered by Board Certified doctors at two clinic locations. Call (888) 828-4575 for more information and scheduling. Tens of millions of Americans suffer from hip arthritis, and hundreds of thousands of hip replacements are performed every year. Nonoperative treatments prior to joint replacement often consist of steroid injections for pain relief. While the joint replacement typically has excellent pain relief outcomes, there are risks involved and sometimes the eventual need for a revision procedure. Therefore, a procedure that offers pain relief while offering the potential for joint repair is a welcome option in hip arthritis management. TeleHealth is now offering platelet rich plasma therapy, known as PRP therapy for short, to provide pain relief and potential joint regeneration. The procedure involves a simple blood draw at the office, with the blood then being spun down in a centrifuge to obtain a solution of concentrated platelets and growth factors. The PRP is then injected into the symptomatic hip, providing an immense … Continue reading

Clinical uses of mesenchymal stem cells – Wikipedia, the free …

Adult mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are being used by researchers in the fields of regenerative medicine and tissue engineering, to artificially reconstruct human tissue which has been previously damaged. Mesenchymal stem cells have the capacity to become any type of fully developed cell, which can contribute to replacing muscle tissues or internal organs. To help discover the therapeutic uses of these stem cells they are grown in laboratories or by using medication to stimulate new cell growth within the human body.[1][2][3] In MSC therapy the cells are extracted from the adult patients bone marrow via a procedure called bone marrow aspiration. This usually involves inserting a needle into the back of the patients hip bone and removing the sample from there. These cells are then grown under controlled in vitro conditions in a lab, so that they can multiply and same time mature( also referred to as differentiated. This process may take two to three weeks.[1] The kind of mature, fully differentiated cell phenotype and the number of those cells created though this can be influenced in three ways. Firstly by varying the initial seed density in the culture medium, secondly through changing the conditions of the medium during expansion, … Continue reading

What Is Autism? Symptoms, Causes, Treatments, and More

Posted: Published on December 23rd, 2013

What is autism? Autism is a brain disorder that often makes it hard to communicate with and relate to others. With autism, the different areas of the brain fail to work together. Most people with autism will always have some trouble relating to others. But early diagnosis and treatment have helped more and more people who have autism to reach their full potential. Autism tends to run in families, so experts think it may be something that you inherit. Scientists are trying to find out exactly which genes may be responsible for passing down autism in families. Other studies are looking at whether autism can be caused by other medical problems or by something in your childs surroundings. Some people think that childhood vaccines cause autism, especially the measles-mumps-rubella, or MMR, vaccine. But studies have not shown this to be true. Its important to make sure that your child gets all childhood vaccines. They help keep your child from getting serious diseases that can cause harm or even death. Symptoms almost always start before a child is 3 years old. Usually, parents first notice that their toddler has not started talking yet and is not acting like other children the … Continue reading

Autism — Act Early To Make a Difference

Posted: Published on December 23rd, 2013

Autism. It's such a scary word and a poorly understood one. No parent wants to even think about the possibility that their child might be autistic because the idea is so terrifying. But because autism, a developmental disorder of the brain, is so poorly understood, most people don't know the signs. This means that most children aren't diagnosed until the elementary school years, even though signs of autism typically appear before age 3. The late diagnosis means valuable time is lost before treatment begins. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) created the Act Early Campaign to help with this problem. The campaign teaches parents and caregivers the early signs of autism so they can get children help as early as possible. Back to top What Are Autism Spectrum Disorders? Autism is one of a group of developmental problems that doctors call Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). While we don't know the exact prevalence of autism, the numbers are rising. Doctors arent sure if its because there are really more cases of autism or because people are getting better at diagnosing it. Both may be true. We don't yet know what causes autism. … Continue reading

The two main causes of strokes are termed ischemic and hemorrhagic and involve blood vessels in the brain. Ischemic strokes comprise about 80% to 85% of all strokes. With an ischemic stroke, a blood vessel in the brain becomes clogged with a clot just like the clogged arteries in the heart. With a hemorrhagic stroke, a blood vessel in … Continue reading

Posted: Published on December 23rd, 2013

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 23-Dec-2013 Contact: Meng Zhao eic@nrren.org 86-138-049-98773 Neural Regeneration Research The early management of acute thoracolumbar spine and spinal cord injury is one of the most difficult tasks when treating trauma cases. To standardize the evaluation and treatment of acute thoracolumbar spinal injury, the Chinese Association of Spine and Spinal Cord Injury organized a group of Chinese experts to collectively discuss the draft of "An Expert Consensus on the Evaluation and Treatment of Acute Thoracolumbar Spine and Spinal Cord Injury". The report is based on a detailed literature search and analysis of evidence-based medicine and clinical experiences as well as Delphi method. This is the first time that Chinese experts have published a consensus on spine and spinal cord injury. Experts from the Beijing Army General Hospital of Chinese PLA drafted this consensus. This consensus is a standard for the management of acute spine and spinal cord injury and was approved by domestic experts. It could standardize the evaluation and treatment of acute thoracolumbar spine and spinal cord injury. The relevant contents were published in the Neural Regeneration Research (Vol. 8, No. 33, 2013). ### Article: " An expert consensus on the evaluation and treatment of acute thoracolumbar … Continue reading
