Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Treatment – MS ActiveSource: A Place …

Posted: Published on November 28th, 2013

MS treatments don't cure MS, but they can be effective at helping you reduce the frequency of relapses. Some have been proven to help slow the progression of MS, while others are designed to alleviate certain symptoms. Whichever multiple sclerosis treatment you choose, starting as soon as possible and staying on a therapy is important to help delay future disability. That's why you should work with your healthcare team early to define your treatment goals. Once you have a clear idea of what you can realistically expect from your therapy, you and your healthcare team can create the treatment plan that's right for you. When evaluating MS treatment options, there are a number of choices. They all have different benefits, side effects, dosing schedules, and routes of administration. So it's important to choose one that works with your lifestyle and schedule to help you stay on a multiple sclerosis therapy exactly as prescribed. Hormone Replacement Therapy – WebMD

Posted: Published on November 28th, 2013

Is hormone therapy (HRT) making a comeback? WebMD Feature Archive A few years ago, the use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) looked like a medical mess. For decades, women were told that HRT -- usually a combination of estrogen and progestin -- was good for them during and after menopause. Then the 2002 results of the Women's Health Initiative study seemed to show just the opposite: hormone replacement therapy actually had life-threatening risks such as heart attacks, strokes, and cancer. "Women felt betrayed," says Isaac Schiff, MD, chief of obstetrics and gynecology at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. "They were calling their doctors, saying, 'How could you put me on this drug which causes heart attacks, strokes, and cancer?'" HRT: Revisiting the Hormone Decision It was the summer of 2002 when the news about hormone replacement therapy (HRT) shook us to the core. In what felt like a bomb dropped on all womankind, the U.S. federal government halted the hormone trial of the Women's Health Initiative early a study designed to evaluate the risks and benefits of hormone replacement therapy on disease prevention. The reason: Not only had HRT failed to be the protective fountain of youth doctors and women … Continue reading

Congressman Touts Stem-Cell Lab Tour Despite Opposing Stem …

Rep. Mike Coffman is on record opposing embryonic stem-cell research, but that didnt stop the Colorado Republican from touring a stem-cell laboratory at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and tweeting, Happy to get the chance to tour the Stem Cell Research facility. A spokesman forthe school, which is located inCoffmans district, confirmed that the stem-cell facility visited by Coffman November 8 uses stem cells obtained from human embryos. In 2008 and 2010, Coffman supported Colorados failed personhood initiatives, which aimed to define life as beginning at conception, when embryos form, and would have banned not only embryonic stem-cell research but also all abortions and some common forms of birth control. Coffmans November 8 tweet about his tour of the stem-cell facility included a photo of the Congressman viewing laboratory machines. This is a whats wrong with this picture situation, said Karen Middleton, executive director of Pro-Choice Colorado, in an emailoffering a responseto Coffmans tweet. Mike Coffmans support for anti-choice personhood measures and his opposition to stem-cell research dont really fit here. If he is sincere about supporting women and science, he needs to issue a statement about his new policy position, not just stage a photo-op. Coffmans office did … Continue reading

The Section of Genetic Medicine was created in May 2005 to both build research infrastructure in genetics within the Department of Medicine and to focus translational efforts related to genetics. I am proud to have been chosen to lead this new section. My expertise is in quantitative human genetics with a long-standing research program focused on understanding the genetic component to complex phenotypes, including diabetes (MODY, type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes), asthma and related phenotypes, psychiatric disorders (autism, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorders, Tourettes Syndrome, and schizophrenia) and speech disorders such as stuttering. Yves Lussier M.D., a talented physician scientist with substantial expertise in medical informatics and bioinformatics, joined the section in January 2006 and is already building his research program. Among his research interests are systems medicine and phenomics. In the summer of 2006, two new faculty will join our section with diverse but complementary research interests in genetic and genomic science. Among the first of the initiatives in which the Section of Genetic Medicine has contributed in is beginning the Translational Research Initiative of the Department of Medicine (TRIDOM ) sample collections. Protocols have been approved for sample collections in Department of Medicine outpatient clinics, and initial … Continue reading

The customer has to buy the device, but strategic alliances will be made with the government and NGOs to make sure all can afford the less costly PICOMEDICINE system. 4. What is your success? The delivery of healthcare services which were not deliverable in marginalized communities is the success of the present initiative. 5. How will you do it? The implementation shall be based on the key strategic milestones and principles developed in the business plan. Stem Cell Transplants – Nemours: Kids Health

Posted: Published on November 27th, 2013

Stem cells are cells in the body that have the potential to turn into anything, such as a skin cell, a liver cell, a brain cell, or a blood cell. Stem cells that turn into blood cells are called hematopoietic stem cells. These cells are capable of developing into the three types of blood cells: Hematopoietic stem cells can be found in bone marrow (the spongy tissue inside bones), the bloodstream, or the umbilical cord blood of newborn babies. A stem cell transplant (sometimes called a bone marrow transplant) can replenish a child's supply of healthy hematopoietic stem cells after they have been depleted. It's used to treat a wide range of diseases, including cancers like leukemia, lymphoma, neuroblastoma, Wilms tumor, and certain testicular or ovarian cancers; blood disorders; immune system diseases; and bone marrow syndromes. Transplanted hematopoietic stem cells are put into the bloodstream through an intravenous (IV) line, much like a blood transfusion. Once in the body, they can produce healthy new blood and immune system cells. The two main types of stem cell transplants are autologous and allogeneic. The type of transplant needed will depend on the child's specific medical condition and the availability of a matching … Continue reading
