Brain injuries can happen to anyone and from nearly any type of accident. Even though symptoms may not appear immediately, immediate treatment is critical for brain injuries. LOS ANGELES, CA, November 08, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- In 2009, actress Natasha Richardson fell during a beginner skiing lesson. At first, she did not seem to be seriously hurt. She talked and made jokes before returning to her hotel room. There, however, she complained of head pain and was taken to a hospital. Richardson later died of an epidural hematoma, a brain injury that happens when the arteries tear after the skull is struck hard, resulting in bleeding. Richardson's tragic story illustrates two important points about brain injuries. First, brain injuries can happen to anyone and from nearly any type of accident. Second, even though symptoms may not appear immediately, immediate treatment is critical for brain injuries. Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) happen when a blow to the head or a penetrating injury disrupts normal brain activity. They are common - about 3.5 million people suffered from a TBI in 2009, though most were concussions. TBIs contribute to nearly one-third of all injury-related deaths in this country. Causes Of Brain Injuries The cause of … Continue reading

No known treatment can stop or reverse the breakdown of nerve cells that causes Parkinson's disease. But drugs can relieve many symptoms of the disease. Surgery also can be effective in a small number of people to treat symptoms of Parkinson's disease. Treatment is different for every person, and the type of treatment you will need may change as the disease progresses. Cerebral palsy is a group of disorders that can involve brain and nervous system functions, such as movement, learning, hearing, seeing, and thinking.A.D.A.M. There are several different types of cerebral palsy, including spastic, dyskinetic, ataxic, hypotonic, and mixed. Cerebral palsy is caused by injuries or abnormalities of the brain. Most of these problems occur as the baby grows in the womb, but they can happen at any time during the first 2 years of life, while the baby's brain is still developing. In some people with cerebral palsy, parts of the brain are injured due to low levels of oxygen (hypoxia) in the area. It is not known why this occurs. Premature infants have a slightly higher risk of developing cerebral palsy. Cerebral palsy may also occur during early infancy as a result of several conditions, including: In some cases the cause of cerebral palsy is never determined. Symptoms of cerebral palsy can be very different between people with this group of disorders. Symptoms may: Be very mild or very severe Only involve one side of the body or both sides Be more pronounced in either the arms or legs, or involve both the arms and legs More here: Cerebral … Continue reading

Home Newsroom News Releases FDA Approves Continuation of ALS Stem Cell Trial Oct.21, 2011 Jonathan Glass, MD Nicholas Boulis, MD Emory University researchers have received approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to advance to the next phase of a landmark trial to treat patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) using human neural stem cells. The Phase I trial, currently underway exclusively at Emory University, is designed to assess the safety of implanting neural stem cells into the spinal cord in up to 18 people with ALS and began in January 2010. The first 12 patients received neural stem cell transplants in the lumbar, or lower, region of the spinal cord. After reviewing safety data from these patients, the FDA has granted approval for the trial to advance to the final two groups of patients (three in each group), all of who will be transplanted in the cervical, or upper, region of the spinal cord. This represents a major accomplishment for the trial, meaning that we have achieved our stated goal of proving safety in the first 12 patients who received lumbar spinal injections, says Jonathan Glass, MD, Professor of Neurology, Emory School of Medicine and director of the … Continue reading

Endogenous primordial germ cells in chicken embryos can recover from the cytotoxic effects of busulfan treatment through promotion of the cell cycle, with implications for germ cell transplantation studies. The macrophages in ixmyelocel-T may have beneficial effects in atherosclerotic diseases as they influx cholesterol, remain anti-inflammatory in the face of lipid loading and inflammatory challenge, and display enhanced cholesterol efflux capabilities. Ixmyelocel-T, an expanded, autologous multicellular therapy cultured from bone marrow mononuclear cells, contains M2-like macrophages with clinical potential in tissue repair and regeneration.
