Teach Me LLC and Therapy and Beyond Expand Services to Enhance Client Learning Potential by Integrating ABA Therapy …

Posted: Published on October 2nd, 2013

Dallas, Texas (PRWEB) October 02, 2013 Teach Me LLC and Therapy and Beyond is now combining ABA and Speech in order to provide a more comprehensive treatment approach for their patients. Surveys show a marked increase in the number of children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder over the last five years. Although the cause is unknown, great strides in autism research has raised awareness and brought about sound treatment approaches for individuals with autism. Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) is the leading treatment choice in the US and many other countries. ABA, is a behavioral approach that increases language, play and social skills, while decreasing behaviors that create a barrier to learning. Speech Therapy also becomes essential for identifying appropriate language goals, but is traditionally treated separately from ABA. Most children with autism demonstrate deficits in speech, language and communication. Regina Crone, PhD, BCBA and Founder of Teach Me and Therapy and Beyond believes that collaboration between Speech Pathologists and Behavioral Analysts offer strong benefits to children with autism. Crone states, At our centers we include licensed speech language pathologists as part of our team to ensure that speech targets are developmentally appropriate. Exercise Is 'As Effective As Pills' For Patients With Heart Disease

Posted: Published on October 2nd, 2013

Exercise may be just as effective as drugs at treating common diseases, according to a large study. The research, on more than 339,000 people, found being active was just as good as medicine for those with existing heart disease and in the prevention of diabetes. It also appeared to be a more effective treatment than drugs for people who had suffered a stroke. Experts at the London School of Economics, Harvard Medical School and Stanford University School of Medicine in the United States examined the findings of 305 trials on four conditions: pre-diabetes, heart disease, stroke and heart failure. Of the studies, 57 looked specifically at the effect of exercise and included 14,716 people. More than 200 trials examined drug treatment for the conditions, such as the effects of statins, beta blockers and anti-platelet therapy on preventing significant illness in those with heart disease. The results showed that exercise was just as effective as drugs in treating people with heart disease and whose blood sugar control suggested they were at high risk of diabetes. The results on heart failure were more unclear, with diuretic drugs being found to be more effective than exercise and all other types of drug treatment. … Continue reading

Telestroke service increases rates of 'clot-buster' treatment for stroke

Posted: Published on October 2nd, 2013

Oct. 1, 2013 A telestroke service increases the rate of effective tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) therapy for patients with acute ischemic stroke treated at community hospitals, according to a report in the October issue of Neurosurgery, official journal of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons. The journal is published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, a part of Wolters Kluwer Health. Other studies in the October Neurosurgery find that known gene variants don't affect the size of brain aneurysms and that surgery for a brain defect called Chiari malformation I (CMI) improves outcomes important to patients. Remote Stroke Service Increases tPA Use at Community Hospitals Dr. Stavropoula Tjoumakaris and colleagues of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital evaluated the effects of a telestroke network including 28 community hospitals in the Philadelphia area. In the network, stroke specialists used "remote presence" technology to consult on the care of stroke patients seen at hospitals that didn't have a specialized stroke unit. The study evaluated the rate of appropriate treatment with tPA -- an effective "clot-busting" drug that can be given only within the first few hours after initial stroke symptoms. Over 18 months, the service provided nearly 1,650 remote stroke consultations; the average time from request … Continue reading

Summit to focus on best practices for STEMI, stroke treatment

Posted: Published on October 2nd, 2013

MidMichigan Health and Munson Medical Center will co-host a Cardiovascular Emergency Summit on Oct. 11 to educate area health care professionals on the latest treatment guidelines and processes to quickly and efficiently identify patients suffering from cardiac and stroke emergencies, This educational conference will take place from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Treetops Resort Conference Center, at 3962 Wilkinson Road in Gaylord. The registration cost is $35 per person and includes a continental breakfast and lunch. Summit topics include ST elevated myocardial infarction (STEMI) and stroke treatment, as well as the treatment of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. In a STEMI, one of the coronary arteries is partially or completely blocked off by a blood clot, and as a result virtually all the heart muscle being supplied by the affected artery starts to die, said Dr. Michael Lauer, MidMichigan Health interventional cardiologist. For treatment to be successful, time is crucial, and teamwork is critical. This is also true for stroke and out-of-hospital cardiac arrest Delays at any stage can negatively impact patient outcomes. This conference is designed for physicians, nurses, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, emergency department staff, administrators, intensive care unit and critical care unit personnel, cardiac cath lab staff, community … Continue reading

No compo after misdiagnosis

Posted: Published on October 2nd, 2013

stethoscope.jpg Gerlaine Moult visited Middlemore Hospital's emergency department four times in 2011 with symptoms including severe headaches, a stiff neck and numbness on one side. The Pukekohe woman was told she was stressed and needed a holiday. After paying for a private MRI at a cost of $2500, she was diagnosed with a 5cm by 7cm tumour at the base of her skull, compressing her spinal cord. The tumour was removed, leaving her paralysed. The 32-year-old has since regained her mobility but still suffers from weakness on one side and a lack of sensation on the other. However ACC (Accident Compensation Corporation) says her outcome was not affected by the delay in diagnosing the tumour. ACC spokeswoman Stephanie Melville said the corporation acknowledged the failure to provide adequate treatment, but Mrs Moult did not sustain a personal injury as a result. In reaching the decision, clinical records were considered along with external clinical advice from a GP, emergency medicine specialist, neurologist and neurosurgeon. ACC found the care provided by Mrs Moult's GP in May 2011 was appropriate. "After considering the clinical evidence and opinions, we found there was a failure to provide adequate treatment when Mrs Moult presented to the … Continue reading

One person every hour will be diagnosed with Parkinson's in the UK, despite this it remains a little understood condition and we salute Billy's bravery in speaking out about his condition at this difficult time.
