Young Epilepsy and Viropharma Launch Educational Campaign for the Steps in Rescue Management for Children with Epilepsy

Posted: Published on September 6th, 2013

GLASGOW, Scotland, September 6, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- On the second day of the British International League Against Epilepsy Congress in Glasgow, Young Epilepsy announces the launch of a new educational campaign aimed at supporting parents and carers of children with epilepsy. The campaign will raise awareness of good practice in implementing rescue management of prolonged, acute, convulsive seizures in children, with the aim of reducing the risk of progression to status epilepticus and its associated risks which can include brain damage.[1] Steps in rescue management for children with epilepsy: 1. Note the time when the seizure started 2. Clear the area to allow the child to move freely and safely 3. Administer rescue medication according to the child's emergency protocol (usually after 5 minutes in convulsive seizures) 4. Reassure and monitor the child 5. Call an ambulance if the seizure continues for 5 minutes after giving rescue medication "As most prolonged, acute, convulsive seizures, occur in the community, whether or not children receive the immediate treatment needed as prescribed by their doctor depends on the presence of a parent, teacher or carer, who is trained and able to administer rescue medication," explains Lisa Farmer, Interim Chief Executive at Young Epilepsy, … Continue reading

Sequencing seizures: Discovering new genetic mutations behind epilepsy

Posted: Published on September 6th, 2013

Neurologist Prof Sam Berkovic and molecular geneticist Prof David Goldstein describe their work uncovering chance mutations that cause childhood epilepsy. DYANI LEWIS I'm Dyani Lewis, thanks for joining us. The Human Genome Project, which published a completed sequence of our entire genetic code in 2003, introduced the world to large scale genomic sequencing efforts. Since then genome sequencing has become both faster and far more affordable. The result is that researchers and geneticists are now employing powerful sequencing strategies to investigate a great number of conditions, many for which a genetic cause has long been a mystery. Epilepsy is one such condition and today on Up Close I am joined by two researchers who are using genomic sequencing technologies to identify the needle, or in this case the needles, in the haystack. They are looking for which genes out of the 20,500-odd genes in our genome are the faulty ones that cause epilepsy. My first guest today on Up Close is neurologist and epileptologist Professor Sam Berkovic. Sam is director of the Epilepsy Research Centre in Melbourne and Laureate Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Melbourne. Welcome to Up Close, Sam. SAM BERKOVIC Thank you, Dyani. … Continue reading

Penn Medicine Researchers Pin Down the Genetics of Going Under

Posted: Published on September 6th, 2013

Newswise PHILADELPHIA - Falling asleep in your bed at night and being put to sleep under general anesthesia as well as waking up in the morning or coming out of anesthesia arent quite the same thing, yet they share some important similarities. Max Kelz, MD, PhD, assistant professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, along with colleagues from Penn, UCSD, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and Thomas Jefferson University, explored the distinctions between anesthetic unconsciousness and sleep by manipulating the genetic pathways known to be involved in natural sleep and studying the resulting effects on anesthetic states. Their work will be published in PLOS Genetics. Previous research by Kelzs team pointed to a neurological barrier, called neural inertia, that separates awareness from anesthetic unconsciousness and resists the transition from one state to the other. They also found that the processes by which the brain enters anesthesia and then later reemerges into consciousness are actually quite different -- one isnt simply the reverse of the other. With this knowledge in hand, Kelz and his colleagues used a Drosophila model system to focus on the genetic pathways controlling neural inertia. In this new … Continue reading

Ottawa research team leading study that allows heart to heal itself

Posted: Published on September 6th, 2013

OTTAWA A team of cardiac researchers led by Ottawa scientists has launched groundbreaking clinical trials of a stem cell therapy that helps the heart heal itself. About 70,000 Canadians have a heart attack each year. While many patients return to health after treatment, others suffer from scarring, which affects the chance of long-term survival. Scar tissue leads to stretching of the heart and that leads to consequences, including heart failure and early death, says Dr. Duncan Stewart, the CEO and scientific director of the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute and the trials lead principal investigator. This trial enlists stem cells and their amazing ability to help organs regenerate. The first study participant is Harriet Garrow, 68, who had a heart attack on July 2 at home in Cornwall. After her heart stopped beating, Garrow was resuscitated by paramedics and taken to a hospital in Cornwall, then transferred to the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. She received all available heart attack therapies, including opening up a blocked artery with a balloon catheter, but her heart had still had extensive damage. She agreed to the experimental therapy and had an infusion on July 25. Like all the participants, Garrow doesnt know if she … Continue reading

Ottawa leads stem cell therapy for heart patients

Posted: Published on September 6th, 2013

Nutrition and Fitness Health Home>>Nutrition and Fitness>>Health news Written by: Kelly Roche, Ottawa Sun Sep. 6, 2013 From left, Dr. Duncan Stewart, lead principal investigator of the ENACT-AMI stem cell therapy trial, Harriet Garrow, who is part of a stem cell trial and her husband Peter Garrow during a press conference at the Ottawa Hospital General Campus September 5, 2013. (QMI Agency) OTTAWA -- A massive heart attack prompted Harriet Garrow to become the first patient participating in a groundbreaking clinical trial headquartered in the nation's capital. "I am thrilled to play a part in this research," said Garrow, 68, of Cornwall, Ont. Using a patient's own stem cells -- extracted from their blood shortly following a major heart attack -- to regenerate the damaged organ, Enhanced Angiogenic Cell Therapy-Acute Myocardial Infarction is a promising game-changer. Cells are enhanced then infused back into the patient's heart using special catheters. Stem cells have "incredible potential to repair and regenerate damaged organs," although cells from heart patients don't have the same healing abilities as those from healthy young adults, Stewart said. Whether the procedure is replacing damaged cells or helping damaged cells recover is anyone's guess. Nonetheless, "we know that if we … Continue reading
