Abe Funds Stem Cells to Help Cure Japan Wasting Disease

Posted: Published on September 4th, 2013

Economic regeneration is the name of the game for Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, and cellular regeneration is one way to play it. The government is pushing through bills to fast-track regulatory approval for cell-based products and set new research guidelines. Its also funding a $1.12 billion study of a type of stem cell free from ethical concerns over embryo harvesting that have dogged the science for more than a decade. Abe aims to cement Japans leadership in a field of research that last year garnered the nations first Nobel Prize for medicine in a quarter of a century. Not only academic bragging rights are at stake: the government wants new industries to wean the worlds third-biggest economy from its dependence on autos and estimates stem cells potential to rejuvenate worn-out body parts or reverse degenerative diseases such as Alzheimers may yield $380 billion in sales by 2050. Lawmakers will debate legislation as early as this month to make the approval process for cell therapies faster than in the U.S. and U.K. That marks a sea-change from the kind of conservative regime that held back Japanese scientists from research into cells derived from human embryos, said Alan Colman, executive director … Continue reading

TUCSON (AP) The Muscular Dystrophy Associations nationally broadcast 48th annual telethon and related fundraising efforts have raised about a million dollars more than last year with $59.6 million in contributions over the Labor Day weekend. The two-hour MDA Show of Strength aired Sunday on ABC. MDA President and CEO Steven M. Derks says the money raised will go toward treatment of muscular dystrophy and related diseases, and funding of research to find a cure. A release from the association said the total amount raised came from pledges during the show and through midnight Monday, as well as money raised by MDA sponsors. Celebrities such as American Idol host Ryan Seacrest and Brady Bunch mom Florence Henderson were part of the shows lineup this year, along with the Backstreet Boys, singer Paula Abdul and other entertainers. The telethon was the third since comedian Jerry Lewiss 45-year role as host ended. Kelli Park, a spokeswoman for the Tucson-based MDA, says the 2012 telethon raised $58.7 million last year. NEWPORT BEACH, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- CureDuchenne, a national nonprofit organization that raises awareness and funds research for Duchenne muscular dystrophy, announced today that Fergie, the eight-time Grammy award-winning singer/songwriter, is appearing in a new public service announcement (PSA) campaign on behalf of the organization. The PSA is part of CureDuchennes efforts to raise awareness of Duchenne, the most common and lethal form of muscular dystrophy, and raise funds to develop a robust pipeline of therapies that target the disease from every angle. Currently there is no treatment for Duchenne. Boys with Duchenne are usually diagnosed before the age of five and are in a wheelchair by age 12; most dont survive their mid-20s. Best known as the female vocalist for the hip hop group The Black Eyed Peas, Fergie and her husband, actor Josh Duhamel, became new parents on August 29 when their son Axl Jack was born. Potential Epilepsy Drug Discovered Using Zebrafish

Posted: Published on September 4th, 2013

Newswise An antihistamine discovered in the 1950s to treat itching may also prevent seizures in an intractable form of childhood epilepsy, according to researchers at UC San Francisco who tested it in zebrafish bred to mimic the disease. The researchers said their unexpected discovery offers a glimmer of hope for families of children with Dravet Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that manifests in early childhood with disabling, lifelong consequences. These include dozens, if not hundreds, of daily seizures, as well as profound cognitive and social deficits. It is very unfortunate for these children and families, as they often live from seizure to seizure, said Scott C. Baraban, PhD, lead author of the article, UCSF William K. Bowes Jr. Endowed Chair in Neuroscience Research and professor of Neurological Surgery. Small, translucent and easy to breed, zebrafish are increasingly being used in place of rodents to screen drugs for rare genetic disorders. But no one had used them for epilepsy drug screening until Barabans team found zebrafish with a genetic mutation identical to the one that causes Dravet Syndrome. Baraban said his method of drug discovery could be used to screen drugs for any form of epilepsy caused by mutations in a … Continue reading

Mutant Zebrafish and Antihistamines Hold Hope for Severe Epilepsy Treatment

Zebrafish with genetic mutation used to test epilepsy drugs (wiki commons) An antihistamine discovered in the 1950s and a mutant zebrafish potentially hold the key to a treatment for a severe form of epilepsy. Dravet syndrome is a rare genetic disorder that begins in early childhood. It often has lifelong, disabling consequences, including dozens if not hundreds of seizures in an individual every day. Researchers at the University of California San Francisco(UCSF)believe their find may also be used to find drugs for all forms of epilepsy. Scott Baraban, lead author of the article published online inNature Communications, explained that zebrafish were increasingly being used in place of rodents to screen drugs for rare genetic disorders. However, they had not been used for epilepsy until the team found that a zebrafish with the same genetic mutation as the one that causes Dravet syndrome. The disorder develops because of mutations in the Scn1a gene, which is involved in regulating how charged ions to pass through the membranes of neurons. In Dravet syndrome, these channels let in too many ions and the neurons "over-fire", causing seizures. Unlike some forms of epilepsy that can be targeted and treated surgically by removing malfunctioning brain tissue, … Continue reading

However, a group of University of California, San Francisco researchers, doing just that, may have stumbled onto a new drug to treat a certain form of childhood epilepsy. Although previous studies have found antihistamines can make seizures worse, the UCSF researchers found that the antihistamine clemizole can prevent seizures in zebrafish modified to replicate the rare form of childhood epilepsy called Dravet Syndrome. This finding was completely unexpected. Based on what is currently known about clemizole, we did not predict that it would have antiepileptic effects, said study author Scott C. Baraban, a neurologist at UCSF. Instead of expanding on previous drug research, Baraban and colleagues used a random test of 320 compounds that had already been approved for use by the Food and Drug Administration. The team said they could not … Continue reading

(PRWEB) September 03, 2013 Center for Autism and Related Disorders (CARD), Inc. will host a seminar, New York Insurance Funding for Autism, on Thursday, September 26, 2013, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at 6 N. Main Street, Suite 110, in Fairport. The free, two-hour seminar will teach parents of individuals with autism how to gain access to insurance coverage for autism treatment as regulations that implement New Yorks autism mandate take effect. This seminar comes at a time when many struggle to obtain coverage and others face interruption of coverage. Attendees must reserve seating no later than September 25 by contacting d(dot)plump(at)centerforautism(dot)com. The New York Autism Insurance Mandate (A 8512) went into effect in November, 2012 as one of the most comprehensive autism insurance reforms in the country, requiring health plans to provide coverage of critical autism therapies for both children and adults. The law allows up to $45,000 a year in ABA treatment with no age limit. Shortly after going into effect, the New York Department of Financial Services published emergency regulations which required ABA therapy to be provided only by licensed Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs). This left many families without access to care, as New … Continue reading
