Stem cell lab opens

Posted: Published on September 1st, 2013

Aug 30, 2013 From wire report TALLINN - A lab suitable for production and multiplying of stem cells, unique in the Baltic States was opened in the Tehnopolis center in Tallinn on Aug. 16, reports Postimees Online. The new lab includes a so-called clean room corresponding to GMP standards, which guarantees an aseptic environment with a special monitoring and influencing system. Creators of the lab want to develop it, together with the Cell Treatment Cluster, into a production venue necessary for the development of Estonian and European medicine that is capable of producing cell treatment products corresponding to high quality requirements. Estonian scientists are expected to post scientific achievements and breakthroughs to the world. The prerequisite for achieving an applied breakthrough is a research-technical base and a lab with clean area that corresponds to the conditions for medicine production, said Biolaborite council member, non-profit organization Cell Treatment founder, cell biologist PhD Toomas Neuman. Cell treatment is a future field of medicine that enables treatment of a person with stem cells taken from his own body. As a doctor and a surgeon I hope that the new lab provides an opportunity of creating and developing innovative treatment methods for global medicine, … Continue reading

Rejoinder to the stem cell ‘tempest’

Posted: Published on September 1st, 2013

Medical Files By Rafael Castillo M.D. Philippine Daily Inquirer First of two parts Last Wednesday, the leaders of close to 30 medical organizations, composed of specialists from various fields, gathered at the office of the Philippine College of Physicians (PCP) to reassert their recommendations to the Department of Health (DOH) and the Philippine Food and Drug Administration (PhilFDA) to regulate stem cell treatment (SCT) in the country. As we said in a previous column, many local practitioners are jumping the gun and, unfortunately, sprinting in the wrong direction with their unscrupulous administration of stem cells left and right for various medical conditions. Their medical practice has not been established as safe and effective for this experimental treatment. Some medical colleagues were quoted as saying that these medical organizations that are sounding the alarm dont realize that they are killing this promising treatment of the future. I dont think so. Theyre in fact protecting this potential form of treatment from practices that would compromise the safety of patients on the long term, and give it a bad name. More local experience In previous columns, weve encouraged more local experience on stem cell treatment under a research protocolwhich is also one of … Continue reading

Study supports intracerebral stem cell injections to prevent/reduce post-stroke cognitive deficits

Posted: Published on August 31st, 2013

Public release date: 26-Aug-2013 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Daphne Watrin d.watrin@iospress.nl 31-206-883-355 IOS Press Amsterdam, NL, August 23, 2013 Cognitive deficits following ischemic stroke are common and debilitating, even in the relatively few patients who are treated expeditiously so that clots are removed or dissolved rapidly and cerebral blood flow restored. A new study in Restorative Neurology and Neuroscience demonstrates that intracerebral injection of bone-marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BSCs) reduces cognitive deficits produced by temporary occlusion of cerebral blood vessels in a rat model of stroke, suggesting that BSCs may offer a new approach for reducing post-stroke cognitive dysfunction. According to the American Heart Association, almost half of ischemic stroke survivors older than 65 years of age experience cognitive deficits, contributing to functional impairments, dependence, and increased mortality. The incidence of cognitive deficits triples after stroke and about one quarter of cognitively impaired stroke patients' progress to dementia. For these reasons, "there is an underlying need for restorative therapies," says lead investigator Gary L. Dunbar, PhD, of the Field Neurosciences Institute Laboratory for Restorative Neurology, and Director of the Central Michigan University Program in Neuroscience. In order to see whether mesenchymal stem cells derived from bone marrow … Continue reading

Protein that protects nucleus also regulates stem cell differentiation

Posted: Published on August 31st, 2013

Aug. 29, 2013 The human body has hundreds of different cell types, all with the same basic DNA, and all of which can ultimately be traced back to identical stem cells. Despite this fundamental similarity, a bone cell has little in common with a brain cell when it comes to appearance or function. The fact that bone is rigid and mechanically distinct from soft fat or brain had been speculated to play some role in differentiation to new cells in those parts of the body, but mechanisms have been unclear. Now, a study by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania have shown that a protein found in the nuclei of all cells -- lamin-A -- plays a key role in the differentiation process. The study was led by professor Dennis Discher and postdoctoral researchers Joe Swift and Irena Ivanovska of the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering in Penn's School of Engineering and Applied Science. It was published in the journal Science. Lamin-A is a protein found in the nucleus of all adult cells. This rope-like protein forms a protective netting around the DNA contained at the core of the nucleus. The first hint that lamin-A might be involved in … Continue reading

New Evidence Published in Muscle and Nerve on Measuring 6-Minute Walk Distance in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

Posted: Published on August 31st, 2013

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, N.J., Aug.26, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --Data published in the medical journal Muscle & Nerve demonstrate the clinical meaningfulness of the 6-minute walk test (6MWT) as a primary endpoint to measure disease progression and walking ability in ambulatory Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) trials. The research also showed that a range of 20 to 30 meters in walking ability is a clinically meaningful change, as measured by 6-minute walk distance (6MWD). This analysis is based on natural history data obtained from PTC Therapeutics' Phase 2b trial of ataluren in 174 patients with nonsense mutation Duchenne muscular dystrophy (nmDMD), the first placebo-controlled, multi-national study of a new chemical entity for DMD. (Logo:http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20010919/PTCLOGO) "Given that several novel approaches to the treatment of Duchenne muscular dystrophy have shown promise in preclinical and/or proof-of-concept clinical studies, the research community has faced the need to identify and develop clinically meaningful outcome measures for use in pivotal therapeutic trials. In boys with DMD, walking abnormalities are a major disease manifestation that have great importance to patients and their families," stated Dr. Craig McDonald, one of the world's leading experts in muscular dystrophy clinical endpoints and DMD natural history studies and lead author of the two publications. "We … Continue reading
