BIND Doses First Patient in a Phase 2 Clinical Study of BIND-014 in Prostate Cancer

Posted: Published on August 19th, 2013

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- BIND Therapeutics, a clinical-stage nanomedicine platform company developing targeted and programmable therapeutics called AccurinsTM, announced today that it has dosed the first patient in a Phase 2 clinical trial to assess the safety and efficacy of BIND-014, a PSMA-targeted Accurin containing docetaxel, as first-line therapy in patients with chemotherapy nave metastatic castrate-resistant prostate cancer. While treatment options for metastatic castrate-resistant prostate cancer have advanced in recent years, primarily due to an increased understanding of androgen receptor biology, a significant unmet need remains for patients who fail hormonal agents, said Gregory Berk, MD, Chief Medical Officer of BIND Therapeutics. We are pleased our Phase 1 trial of BIND-014 established the safety profile and appropriate Phase 2 dose, and we are advancing BIND-014 in clinical development to further evaluate it as a potential treatment option for patients who are in need of more effective therapies. Prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) is an attractive target in patients with advanced prostate cancer. By delivering an established cytotoxic to this target, there is the potential to significantly improve the therapeutic index and patient outcomes, commented Howard Scher, MD, the Chief of the Genitourinary Oncology Service at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and Professor of … Continue reading

Medical experts urge clinical trials on stem cell therapy to check its "unproven indications"

Posted: Published on August 18th, 2013

by Azer N. Parrocha MANILA Following his recent resignation as (DOH) Consultant for Non-Communicable Diseases, Dr. Anthony Leachon said that he and medical societies would step up and notify the public about stem cell therapys unproven indications. Leachon, resigned as consultant of the Department of Health last Friday because he did not agree with Health Secretary Enrique Onas stand on allowing the practice of the therapy in the country despite its lack of regulation and interest to pursue clinical trials. Aside from being DOH consultant, Leachon is also vice-president of the Philippine College of Physicians (PCP). [It is] sad to say, but our regulatory agencies have not served the people's welfare but has become SCT (stem cell therapy) pushers, Leachon said, via Twitter. The Philippines has not published or done any decent clinical trials yet; SCT is being pushed without regard to safety, he added, earlier explaining the importance of trials to confirm a treatments safety. I don't want to be respectful to DOH [Secretary] as a consultant opposing him, Leachon said. [I] don't want to lend credibility to DOH. He explained that since he was not in agreement with the DOH, it was best that he let his brother, … Continue reading

by Buena Bernal Posted on 08/17/2013 4:29 PM |Updated 08/18/2013 2:51 AM CLARIFICATION. Health Secretary Enrique Ona writes to a newspaper that his published speech is not the final word on stem cell therapy regulation. File photo by Rappler/Naoki Mengua MANILA, Philippines Health Secretary Enrique Ona has clarified that his speech published in The Philippine Star as a full-page advertisement should not be misconstrued as the end-all, be-all pronouncement on the issue of stem cell therapy regulation. The controversial speech categorized stem cell therapy as part of "innovative therapy," whereas clinical trials or thorough drug testing locally may be evaded in the meantime for the sake of innovation. It was delivered by Ona on August 12, during the 1st mid-year convention of the Philippine Society for Stem Cell Medicine (PSSCM). The full-page ad appeared on August 14. READ: Stem cell debate: innovation or safety? The published copy of Ona's speech was labeled with the words "Stem Cell: The Final Word." Ona, however, wanted to dispel "any confusion" caused by the advertisement's label. "In the keynote message, there was no mention or any insinuation that the said pronouncement was the 'Final Word on Stem Cell'," the health chief wrote the newspaper. … Continue reading
