Like many 5-year-olds, he enjoys sports and playing with his little brother - but unlike many children his age, he needs help to do even the simplest of tasks. Daniel was born with spastic cerebral palsy, a condition that makes his muscles very tight, prohibiting him from standing or walking unaided. In the UK, a surgical procedure known as selective dorsal rhizotomy, or SDR, is relatively new with poor availability, which is why Daniel and his family have sought help from Dr. T.S. Park, a neurosurgeon at the St. Louis Children's Hospital in Missouri. The potentially life-changing surgery comes at some cost, however - $83,000 to be precise. Tree of Hope - a UK-based children's charity with close links to MNT - is helping Daniel's family with funding, in addition to a 5,000 ($7,600) donation from us toward Daniel's cause. The Tree of Hope is Medical News Today's charity of the year. Go to Daniel's … Continue reading

One of those people is Abby Blackburn, who suffered a brain injury over five years ago that took part of her memory. Michael, her husband of 28 years, became her teacher, but even with his help Abby wants more. "She doesn't feel like she has a place or a purpose outside in the world, and I see Clubhouse as providing something like that," Michael Blackburn said. Clubhouse is a branch of the non-profit Synapse House, which will open its first Tampa location next week. Deborah Giesler is the founder and director of Synapse House. She has spent 20 years working as a therapist with brain injury patients. "A lot of times after a person has a brain injury or a stroke, they are not able to go back to work again, she said. And so what do they do? And given that most people who are injured are young, they're 20-40 years old, you're looking at a lifetime of not really having that focus again." St. Clement's Episcopal Church was looking for a way to give back … Continue reading

Research and Markets: Opportunities in Human Embryonic Stem Cell Products

Posted: Published on August 7th, 2013

DUBLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/5flxzm/opportunities_in) has announced the addition of the "Opportunities in Human Embryonic Stem Cell Products" report to their offering. Human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) are stem cells derived from the inner cell mass of a blastocyst, which is a stage reached four to five days post-fertilization. Human embryonic stem cells are the most pluripotent of all stem cell types and can develop into over 200 different cell types of the human body. Human embryonic stem cells were first derived from mouse embryos in 1981 by Martin Evans and Matthew Kaufman, and independently by Gail R. Martin. In 1995, the first successful culturing of embryonic stem cells from non-human primates occurred at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Another breakthrough followed at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in November 1998 when a group led by Dr. James Thomson developed a technique to isolate and grow hESCs derived from human blastocysts. Federal funds to support hESC research became available on August 9, 2001, when President Bush announced his decision regarding federal funding for hESC research. Because of their plasticity and unlimited capacity for self-renewal, hESCs have been proposed for use in wide range of applications, including toxicology testing, tissue engineering, cellular … Continue reading
