After brain injury, woman is riding to recover

Posted: Published on July 15th, 2013

WAVERLY, IA. - Laura Baker was in the thick of last year's rolling circus of sweat-stained memories that is the Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa. She was there among the 10,000 riders who mingled in the shadow of grain elevators, jostled each other in line at roadside pie stands and made fast friends by the time they dipped tires a week later in the Mississippi River. Yet Baker doesn't remember pedaling a single mile. The now 26-year-old University of Denver graduate student and Wartburg College alum rode her inaugural RAGBRAI last year with her father, Tom, a Waverly Realtor. So technically, Baker isn't a newbie - often emblazoned with a virginal "V" on his or her calf muscles and subjected to a week of quirky rituals. But she recalls neither the heat nor the high jinks. Weeks after last year's RAGBRAI, she crashed her bike and suffered a traumatic brain injury that erased six months of her memory. Through a grueling yet remarkable year of recovery, she became determined not only to climb back on her bike, but also to return to RAGBRAI with her dad. "That sort of represented getting back to her previous life, I think," … Continue reading

Mother killed ‘possessed’ baby son

Posted: Published on July 15th, 2013

A mother who killed her two-year-old son by standing on his mouth and chest believed she was expelling an evil spirit, a court has been told. Rachael Hadley was acutely psychotic at the time and didn't understand the consequences of her actions, counsel assisting Amy Cacas told the South Australian Coroners Court on Monday. 'She didn't know she was killing her son,' Ms Cacas said. 'She believed she was expelling an evil spirit from him and expected him to recover.' Duke Hadley died on November 5, 2009 from asphyxiation caused by compression of his neck and chest. His mother was charged with his murder but found mentally incompetent. She has since been released on licence. Ms Cacas said the issue for the inquest would be whether or not anything more could have been done in relation to Ms Hadley's treatment to have prevented the boy's death. The boy's father, Jason Hura, told the court that Ms Hadley had twice been admitted to a mental health clinic for treatment. But he said she would stop taking her medication because it made her sleep all day. In the period before the boy's death she had been 'getting paranoid' and was constantly locking … Continue reading

Featured Article Academic Journal Main Category: Women's Health / Gynecology Article Date: 15 Jul 2013 - 1:00 PDT Current ratings for: World-First Estrogen Defect Discovery In Woman Without Breasts Or Menstrual Periods 5 (3 votes) A genetic receptor mutation that blocks the action of estrogen has been discovered for the first time in a female, according to a report published in the New England Journal of Medicine. The 18-year-old woman was showing classic symptoms of having lower estrogen levels than normal after experiencing no breast development or menstruation. But researchers at Augusta's Medical College of Georgia found that the female had extremely high levels of estrogen in her blood. Dr. Lawrence Layman, head of reproductive endocrinology, infertility and genetics at the medical school, said: "Her body totally ignores estrogen. Even at levels that are 10 to 15 times normal, it has no effect." Dr. Layman adds that in laboratory studies, it took 240 times the normal level of estrogen to gain a response from the woman's receptor. There are two types of estrogen receptor that have been confirmed by research, the authors point out: estrogen receptor-alpha, and estrogen receptor-beta. Genetic testing revealed that this woman had a mutation in estrogen … Continue reading

Study Reveals How Patients Experience Direct-to-Consumer Tests

Posted: Published on July 15th, 2013

Newswise MAYWOOD, Il. Several companies sell genetic testing directly to consumers, but little research has been done on how consumers experience such tests. The tests have raised questions about the validity and accuracy of the information provided to consumers especially without the involvement of a qualified health care professional. Now, a study lead by a Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine researcher is providing insight into how a diverse sample of primary care patients experience genetic testing. Lead researcher Katherine Wasson, PhD, MPH, and colleagues conducted in-depth interviews with 20 patients recruited from primary care clinics. Among the findings, published online ahead of print in the Journal of Community Genetics: - Most participants thought results were fairly easy to understand with the help of a genetic counselor (provided by the study, not the testing company). But fewer than half said they might be able to understand results on their own. - Most participants expressed no concern or hesitation about testing. But a few worried about confidentiality especially whether results could affect their health insurance coverage. A few also expressed fears about getting bad results. As one participant explained, I mean, you want to know, but then you dont want … Continue reading
