DEAR READER: The most common kind of strokes, called ischemic strokes, occur when an artery supplying oxygen-rich blood to a part of the brain is blocked. This leads to the death of some brain cells. Many strokes are caused by blockages of the largest arteries in thebrain. A lacunar stroke involves smaller arteries deep in the brain that branch off the large arteries. Because the arteries are smaller, the amount of brain tissue they feed You have viewed 20 free articles or blogs allowed within a 30-day period. Spinal Injury Causes Permanent Damage Within Weeks: Study

Posted: Published on July 4th, 2013

WEDNESDAY, July 3 (HealthDay News) -- For people who suffer a spinal cord injury, irreversible tissue loss occurs within 40 days, which is much sooner than previously thought, researchers say. The investigators used new MRI techniques to assess 13 people with spinal cord injuries. The patients were checked every three months for a year after their injury. After 12 months, the diameter of the spinal cord was 7 percent smaller. Lesser declines were also evident in the corticospinal tract (which is critical for motor control), and nerve cells in the brain's sensorimotor cortex (which integrates the senses and the motor system), according to the researchers at the University of Zurich in Switzerland and University College London in the United Kingdom. "Patients with a greater tissue loss above the injury site recovered less effectively than those with less changes," researcher Patrick Freund, of the University of Zurich, said in a university news release. The study was published July 2 in The Lancet Neurology. Until now, it had been believed that it took years before tissue changes in the spinal cord and brain above the injury site could be detected. This study shows that tissue loss occurs much earlier and that newer … Continue reading

Shape-shifting disease proteins may explain variable appearance of neurodegenerative diseases

Posted: Published on July 4th, 2013

Public release date: 3-Jul-2013 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Kim Menard kim.menard@uphs.upenn.edu 215-662-6183 University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine PHILADELPHIA - Neurodegenerative diseases are not all alike. Two individuals suffering from the same disease may experience very different age of onset, symptoms, severity, and constellation of impairments, as well as different rates of disease progression. Researchers in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania have shown one disease protein can morph into different strains and promote misfolding of other disease proteins commonly found in Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and other related neurodegenerative diseases. Virginia M.Y. Lee, PhD, MBA, professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and director of the Center for Neurodegenerative Disease Research, with co-director, John Q. Trojanowski MD, PhD, postdoctoral fellow Jing L. Guo, PhD, and colleagues, discovered that alpha-synuclein, a protein that forms sticky clumps in the neurons of Parkinson's disease patients, can exist in at least two different structural shapes, or "strains," when it clumps into fibrils, despite having precisely the same chemical composition. These two strains differ in their ability to promote fibril formation of normal alpha-synuclein, as well as the protein tau, which forms neurofibrillary tangles in individuals with Alzheimer's disease. Importantly, … Continue reading

Tom Barber had a brain injury when he slipped and fell on ice and landed on the side of his head. "He started with the excruciating headaches and the nausea and the vomiting," Chick Barber, Tom's wife, said. When Barber fell, it caused his brain to bleed. Doctors decided to wait and see, hoping that the blood would dissipate. But a few weeks later at a check up, it was obvious he was in trouble. "The nurse said, 'Your birthday, Mr. Barber,' and he had slurred speech," Chick Barber said. The blood began to spread, placing more pressure on his brain. He needed surgery, but because he had a heart condition and was on blood thinners, he was not a candidate for the traditional, risky, open cranial brain surgery. But thankfully there was another option. "It's something new," said Dr. Julie Pilitsis. "We can take out this blood at the bedside rather than going to the operating room." It's called a bedside burr-hole subdural drainage, or in less technical terms, bedside brain surgery. … Continue reading

Craven County woman treats MS with diet, exercise, faith

Posted: Published on July 4th, 2013

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a familiar enemy. Thousands of people ride for a cure for MS in cycling-related fundraising events every year, including one in New Bern each September. The neuro-muscular autoimmune disease affects more than half a million people nationwide, some with crippling effects, and so far research has not pinned down a cause or cure, but continues to find treatments to help many patients better cope with it. Geneva Best Horne of the Pleasant Hill community just outside New Bern was diagnosed with MS in 2006 after she didnt recover as quickly as doctors felt she should from a 2005 accident. When the diagnosis came down, Horne was advised that an option for treatment was weekly interferon injections, but I asked if could go natural, she said. She was already interested in exercise and had played basketball at the West Street and J.T. Barber schools as a girl. And she had moved to a healthy, more natural lifestyle years before, spurred on by Dr. Neil Bender, who started Eastern Carolina Internal Medicine (now CarolinaEast Internal Medicine) in Pollocksville. He told me you can take charge of your health or depend on medication for the rest of your life, … Continue reading
