Philippine gov't to tighten rules on stem cell therapy

Posted: Published on June 29th, 2013

Manila (Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN) - Hospitals offering stem cell therapy have until Aug. 31 to seek or renew their accreditation from the Department of Health (DOH), a Philippine official said Friday. "For the information of the public, the DOH is accrediting hospitals for this kind of treatment, and come Aug. 31, these hospitals should file their accreditation requirements (with DOH) for them to continue to offer this treatment," said deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte. The government is eyeing stricter regulation of hospitals offering stem cell therapy amid speculations that the recent deaths of three politicians were due to the xenogenic (animal-based stem cell) treatment they had received in Germany last year. Dr. Leo Olarte, president of the Philippine Medical Association (PMA) and spokesperson of the Philippine Society for Stem Cell Medicine, said the groups were still trying to determine whether the politicians had died due to their illness or due to hypersensitivity reaction from the xenogenic stem cells. Last week, the PMA also warned of a possible scam involving German doctors coming over to perform stem cell therapy on patients in five-star hotels at around 1 million pesos (US$23,000) per shot. Valte echoed a similar warning from the DOH against … Continue reading

Study links cardiac hormone-related inflammatory pathway with tumor growth

Posted: Published on June 29th, 2013

June 28, 2013 A cardiac hormone signaling receptor abundantly expressed both in inflamed tissues and cancers appears to recruit stem cells that form the blood vessels needed to feed tumor growth, reports a new study by scientists at the University of South Florida Nanomedicine Research Center. The research may lead to the development of new drugs or delivery systems to treat cancer by blocking this receptor, known as natriuretic peptide receptor A (NPRA). The findings appeared online recently in the journal Stem Cells. "Our results show that NRPA signaling by cancer cells produces some molecular factors that attract stem cells, which in turn form blood vessels that provide oxygen and nutrients to the tumor," said the study's principal investigator Subhra Mohapatra, PhD, associate professor in the Department of Molecular Medicine. "We showed that if the NPRA signal is blocked, so is the angiogenesis and, if the tumor's blood supply is cut off it will die." Using both cultured cells and a mouse model, Dr. Mohapatra and her team modeled interactions to study the association between gene mutations and exposure to an inflammatory tissue microenvironment. The researchers demonstrated that cardiac hormone NRPA played a key role in the link between inflammation … Continue reading

UK pushes ahead with fertility technique

Posted: Published on June 28th, 2013

THE British government says it would pursue a radical fertility technique that uses DNA from three parents to create an embryo. The IVF-based technique is designed to avoid serious mitochondrial diseases inherited on the maternal side, such as muscular dystrophy. Mitochondria are the structures within cells that convert energy from food into a form that the body can use. The technique would replace some of the unhealthy DNA with healthy DNA from the so-called "third parent". "It's only right that we look to introduce this life-saving treatment as soon as we can," said Sally Davies, the chief medical officer for England, on Thursday. Politicians are due to debate the regulations in parliament next year, setting the stage for Britain to become the first country to offer the treatment. One in 200 children is born each year with a form of disease in their mitochondrial DNA. Scientists are developing a technique to remove some of the mitochondrial DNA of the mother and replace it with DNA from the "third parent" to create a healthy embryo. All of a human's visible characteristics are encoded in DNA found in the cell nucleus. This means that any child born using the technique under consideration … Continue reading
