Concert Pharmaceuticals Initiates Phase 1 Clinical Trial of CTP-354, a Potential Treatment for Spasticity and Pain

Posted: Published on June 11th, 2013

LEXINGTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Concert Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced that it has initiated a Phase 1 clinical trial with CTP-354. CTP-354 is a novel GABAA receptor subtype-selective modulator that has demonstrated no sedation at therapeutic doses in preclinical models in contrast to existing GABAA receptor non-selective agonists, such as benzodiazepines. Concert is developing CTP-354 for the potential treatment of spasticity and chronic pain. The Phase 1 single ascending dose study will evaluate the safety, tolerability and pharmacokinetics of CTP-354 in healthy volunteers. The company also intends to conduct a Positron Emission Tomography (PET) study to assess brain receptor occupancy of CTP-354 in healthy volunteers. Concert expects to report top-line results of the Phase 1 single ascending dose study by year-end. There is a significant unmet need for effective and better tolerated agents in the treatment of both spasticity and chronic pain, particularly treatments that would reduce or avoid the adverse events of sedation and ataxia that are commonly associated with existing treatments, said Roger Tung, Ph.D., President and Chief Executive Officer of Concert Pharmaceuticals. Based on CTP-354s preclinical profile, we believe it has the potential to offer patients effective treatment for these chronic conditions with an improved therapeutic profile. We look … Continue reading

Interferon-beta aids balance and movement in mice with spinocerebellar ataxia 7; first in vivo study of the treatment …

Posted: Published on June 11th, 2013

June 9, 2013 The first in vivo trial of the use of interferon-beta in a mouse model of the group of fatal diseases known as spinocerebellar ataxia has shown that its use can significantly improve their physical condition and control symptoms. Researchers in France and the US believe that their results show that a clinical trial in humans is merited. The group of genetic conditions known as spinocerebellar ataxias currently have no treatment or cure and are always fatal, in the case of affected children at an early age. Symptoms include a progressive lack of co-ordination of gait, and poor co-ordination of hands, speech and eye movements, due to a failure of co-ordination of muscle movements. Now researchers from France and the US have found a new way of controlling the symptoms and significantly improving the physical condition of animal models of the disease, the annual conference of the European Society of Human Genetics will hear today (Monday June 10). Dr. Annie Sittler, from the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), working in the team of Professor Alexis Brice at the research centre Brain and Spinal Cord Institute (CR-ICM), Paris, France described the team's work in the field of … Continue reading

ASPEN Local doctor added to stem-cell study Dr. Julian Robert Gershon Jr., of the Aspen Institute for Regenerative Medicine, will take part in a stem-cell study under the guidance of the Institutional Review Board. Gershon will conduct a free seminar later this month about the program and the benefits of stem-cell therapy. He is looking for new patients to participate in the study as it relates to osteoarthritis, COPD and diabetes. In the past, stem cells were difficult and expensive to procure, Gershon said in a statement. With newer techniques and equipment, stem cells can easily be obtained and concentrated by a simple office procedure, he said. Stem-cell therapy is used for injuries to areas that have a hard time healing on their own (due to the lack of blood supply to the area) and include joints, meniscus tissue (knee), rotator cuff (shoulder) and other tendon injuries. Many times it is used to treat sports injuries, osteoarthritis, COPD and diabetes. Stem-cell therapy is often used when a patient is trying to avoid surgery and looking for alternative ways to heal the area. Many of our patients have seen amazing results, and we are excited to be participating in another study … Continue reading
