Apollo Pharmacy resumes selling Ranbaxy drugs

Posted: Published on June 10th, 2013

Mumbai: Apollo Pharmacy started selling Ranbaxy drugs at its stores again on Monday after the company recertified its stocks. Apollo Pharmacy had on Friday issued a cautionary advisory against Ranbaxy drugs and had temporarily suspended their sale. Earlier, Mumbai's Jaslok Hospital had also stopped the use of Ranbaxy drugs. "Our medical committee, which is a very strong committee within Apollo, has reviewed the matter and recommended, as a cautionary measure, we should temporarily suspend sale of Ranbaxy medicines, as we cannot take a chance with patients' safety. So, we have immediately issued an advisory to our pharmacies," Apollo Hospitals Executive Director Shobana Kamineni told Business Standard. She added Apollo had sent a questionnaire to Ranbaxy seeking details, including re-certification of the existing stock and test reports for other medicines. "We have nothing against Ranbaxy but we must respect what our medical committee has ordered... We have asked them (Ranbaxy) to re-certify whatever stocks we have till now. We have also asked for test reports of all those drugs and a bunch of other details," Kamineni said, adding Apollo's pharmacies would restart sale of Ranbaxy drugs after the company had fulfilled the requirements and satisfied the medical committee. Apollo Pharmacy had … Continue reading

Nearly 1 in 3 Kids with Autism Have ADHD Symptoms

Posted: Published on June 9th, 2013

By Traci Pedersen Associate News Editor Reviewed by John M. Grohol, Psy.D. on June 8, 2013 Nearly 30 percent of young children with autism also have symptoms of ADHD a rate thats three times greater than the general population, according to a new study published in the journal Autism. For the study, researchers asked parents of children (ages 4-8) enrolled in a community-based study of child development about symptoms of attention and hyperactivity: whether or not children could wait their turn, interrupted others who were speaking, fiddled with things during meals or could not slow down, for example. Out of the 62 children diagnosed with autism, 18 (29 percent) also showed signs of ADHD and all were boys. The children with both conditions tended to have more problems with learning and socializing than children who had autism alone. In a child [with autism] who has great difficulties with attention, or hyperactivity or both, you really have to layer in another level of intervention strategies for them, said study author Rebecca Landa, Ph.D., director of the Center for Autism and Related Disorders at the Kennedy Krieger Institute. The researchers noted that treating symptoms of ADHD may benefit children if they arent … Continue reading
