Advanced Sclerosis research at AIIMS soon

Posted: Published on May 26th, 2013

India, May 26 -- The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) is set to advance stem cell research for Multiple Sclerosis (MS), a disease that attacks the central nervous system. "A proposal will soon be sent to the Stem Cell Ethics Committee at the hospital to conduct both epidemiological and therapeutic study using conventional drugs and studies related to stem cell therapy for the disease," said Dr Rohit Bhatia, additional professor of neurology at AIIMS. A proposal for hematopoietic stem cell transplant has already been submitted for ethics clearance and for mesenchymal stem cell therapy. The proposal will be soon sent for clearance and funding. "We have proposed a therapeutic study for multiple sclerosis which involves removing the cells with stem cells that repopulate the body to treat the abnormality due to expansion of autoreactive cells," said Dr Kameshwar Prasad, Professor of Neurology, AIIMS. Though it is know that multiple sclerosis is common among people from temperate or colder climes, a study conducted by AIIMS showed that such cases were increasing in India as well. According to the study, of 101 patients at the hospital between June 2011 to December 2012, it was proved that ratio of female patients … Continue reading

BRADENTON -- Friends, family and others came to a carnival fundraiser on Manatee Avenue Saturday afternoon to help a 14-year-old Lupus patient raise $30,000 for stem cell treatment. Moriah Goode suffers from the autoimmune disease and fibromyalgia. She spoke at the event to give a heartfelt thanks to all who participated. "Thank you for caring about me and loving me so much enough to help me and try to raise money. You are amazing, all of you," she said. The carnival included music, rides, games and food. It gave Moriah a chance to have fun with her friends, a rare treat due to her illnesses. Moriah's stem cell treatment is not covered by her insurance plan. "I'm terrified because some days my back goes numb and sometimes my whole body goes numb and my hands shake and I have tremors and I can't do anything to control it," she said. As of Saturday afternoon, she raised $5,400 towards her goal. Here is the original post: Teens tries to raise $30,000 for stem cell treatment … Continue reading

Doctors claim cerebral palsy 'cure'

Research into stem cell treatments has shown promising progress Photograph: Getty Images Medics in Germany said they have successfully treated a child with cerebral palsy for the first time. Just weeks after being given an intravenous stem cell treatment from umbilical cord blood, the symptoms of a boy who had been left in a vegetative state after a heart attack improved considerably and within months he could talk and move. The doctors who carried out the treatment said the results of the treatment dispel "long-held doubts" surrounding the effectiveness of stem cell therapy. After going into cardiac arrest in November 2008, the two-year-old boy, known only as LB, was left paralysed with severe brain damage and in a vegetative state. Doctors warned his parents that his chances of survival were minimal. Until now, there has been no treatment for the cause of what is known as infantile cerebral palsy. Dr Arne Jensen of the Campus Clinic Gynaecology in Bochum, who carried out the new treatment, said: "In their desperate situation, the parents searched the literature for alternative therapies. They contacted us and asked about the possibilities of using their son's cord blood, frozen at his birth." Nine weeks after the … Continue reading

Heart failure accelerates male 'menopause'

Posted: Published on May 25th, 2013

May 25, 2013 Heart failure accelerates the aging process and brings on early andropausal syndrome (AS), according to research presented today at the Heart Failure Congress 2013. AS, also referred to as male 'menopause', was four times more common in men with heart failure. The Heart Failure Congress is the main annual meeting of the Heart Failure Association of the European Society of Cardiology and is being held 25-28 May in Lisbon, Portugal (1). As men get older they are more likely to suffer from andropausal syndrome (AS), also called 'menopause', androgen deficiency in the aging male (ADAM), or late-onset hypogonadism. Men with AS have decreased levels of anabolic hormones, including testosterone, and it has been suggested that these hormone deficiencies are what cause the clinical symptoms. The symptoms of AS according to the Aging Male Symptom Rating Scale can be divided into three categories: sexual (erectile dysfunction, problems with libido, decrease in beard growth, feelings of 'having passed the zenith of life'), psychological (feeling discouraged, depressed, irritable, anxious, nervous), and somato-vegetative (joint and muscle complaints, sweating, need for more sleep, sleep disturbances, weakness, exhaustion). Heart failure increases with age. Deficiencies of anabolic hormones are common in men with systolic … Continue reading

But until now the impact of heart failure on the prevalence of AS … Continue reading

NFL submitted proposal for immediate HGH testing, according to report

Posted: Published on May 25th, 2013

After years of skirting the issue, the NFL is trying to get very tough on HGH, very fast. In the current culture of sports, performance-enhancing drugs are a part of the everyday conversation. This is something the NFL is trying to curtail now, with the news that it wants HGH testing for the 2013 season after submitting a proposal in late April, according to NFL.com. Other substances are already banned by the NFL, including different types of steroids that carry an automatic four-game suspension. However, HGH isn't on the list. The problem is that it's hard to figure who is guilty of taking HGH because there isn't a baseline established. It's unclear what levels an adult man should have in his body and just how HGH affects a human, something the World Anti-Doping Agency is working on. In the meantime, the NFL wants to take blood and urine samples from the players and store them until a baseline is created. The NFL Players Association would rather the baseline be set before samples are taken, thus causing the stalemate. Report: NFL makes proposal for HGH testing

Posted: Published on May 25th, 2013

The NFL submitted a new proposal for immediate human growth hormone testing as the league and the NFL Players Association continue to negotiate in an effort to have HGH testing in place for the 2013 season, NFL.com reported. The proposal was submitted to the union on April 24, according to the report, and included a concession that eliminated testing on game days. The proposal would also call for testing to begin immediately, with samples then being tested and stored until the World Anti-Doping Agency established a standard for acceptable levels. However, the union would rather start testing after the doping agency has determined the baseline and when full testing is ready to be implemented. "A population study that both parties agreed to a year ago would have resolved the issue of accuracy," union spokesman George Atallah said, according to NFL.com. The NFLPA is working on a counter proposal that could be submitted to the league next week. View original post here: Report: NFL makes proposal for HGH testing … Continue reading
