Stroke patients respond similarly to after-stroke care, despite age difference

Posted: Published on May 17th, 2013

Public release date: 17-May-2013 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Neale Chumbler chumbler@uga.edu 706-369-5975 University of Georgia Athens, Ga. Age has little to do with how patients should be treated after suffering a stroke, according to new research from the University of Georgia. Historically, younger stroke victims receive different after-stroke intervention strategies than those over a certain age. However, Neale Chumbler, a UGA professor and head of the department of health policy and management in the College of Public Health, found patients responded equally to care efforts. Looking at 127 Veterans Affairs medical centers and a sample of 3,196 patients treated for ischemic strokes, or strokes caused by blood clots, Chumbler studied patient response to care quality as outpatients and if the response changed based on age. To determine risk, he looked at depression symptoms, responses to blood thinning medications and average blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels over a period of six months after patients were released from the hospital following a stroke. He found little difference in health quality across the patients regardless of age. The results of the study were published in the April issue of the Journal of Rehabilitation Research and Development. "Watching these … Continue reading

The Dangers Lurking in Male Sexual Supplements

Posted: Published on May 17th, 2013

Maciej Frolow / Getty Images Rock Hard and similar so-called natural supplements for men often contain potentially dangerous drugs some of which have never been tested on animals, let alone humans. In an editorial published in JAMA Internal Medicine, Pieter Cohen, assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and a colleague collected some of the lesser known facts about an industry that produces millions of pills and likely generates tens of millions, if not billions of dollars in profits but is almost entirely free of government oversight. Heres what they found: * A product sold as Rock Hard for Men in 2012 turned out to contain not only counterfeit Cialis (tadalafil) but also a diabetes drug that can be deadly if used incorrectly. A similar combination killed more than a dozen men in Asia in 2009. * One Utah company alone produced more than a million pharmaceutically-tainted pills monthly, earning $2 million between 2007 and 2010, according to an indictment issued in one of the few cases brought against such manufacturers. * More than three-quarters of male enhancement supplements tested in one study in Singapore contained pharmaceuticals that were not disclosed and half of them were present in higher … Continue reading

Breakthrough in human cloning raises hopes for treatment of Parkinson's and heart disease

Posted: Published on May 17th, 2013

Scientists have finally made the long-awaited breakthrough in human cloning by turning skin cells into early-stage embryos that were then used to create specialised tissue cells for transplant operations, it has been revealed today. For the first time, researchers have unequivocally created human embryonic stem cells using the cloning technique that led to the birth of Dolly the sheep. However, unlike Dolly, the human embryos were destroyed when their stem cells were extracted. The scientific milestone, which comes 17 years after the birth of Dolly, represents a major turning point in human cloning research which could now lead to new tissue-transplant operations for a range of debilitating disorders, such as Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, heart disease and spinal cord injuries. However, the breakthrough will also raise serious ethical concerns about the creation of human embryos for medical purposes and the possible use of the same technique to produce IVF embryos for couples wanting their own cloned babies - which is currently illegal in the UK. The scientists who made the advance emphasised that the work is designed to produce replacement tissue for transplant operations from a patient's own skin cells, rather than to improve the chances of so-called reproductive cloning. … Continue reading

High-testosterone competitors more likely to choose red

Posted: Published on May 17th, 2013

May 16, 2013 Why do so many sports players and athletes choose to wear the color red when they compete? A new study to be published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, suggests that it may have to do with their testosterone levels. The new study, conducted by psychological scientist Daniel Farrelly of the University of Sunderland and colleagues, demonstrated that males who chose red as their color in a competitive task had higher testosterone levels than other males who chose blue. "The research shows that there is something special about the color red in competition, and that it is associated with our underlying biological systems," says Farrelly. The researchers believe that the link may explain why many sports stars wear red clothing -- Tiger Woods, for example, famously chooses to wear a red shirt on the last day of a major competition. Choosing to wear red "may, unconsciously, signal something about their competitive nature, and it may well be something that affects how their opponents respond," Farrelly explains. Farrelly and colleagues recruited 73 men to participate in the study, and they were unaware of the study's aims. The men were told that they would … Continue reading
