Experimental Gilead drug effective in early-stage leukemia trial

Posted: Published on May 16th, 2013

By Deena Beasley (Reuters) - An experimental drug from Gilead Sciences Inc shrank tumors in half of leukemia patients whose cancer had returned, according to an early-stage trial that represents a new foray into oncology by the world's biggest seller of HIV medications. Patients in the trial had previously received a median of five other treatments. CLL, which is typically diagnosed through a routine blood test, is a slow-growing cancer, and many patients do not require treatment … Continue reading

But profits at Alliance Boots, Europes largest pharmacy chain, still managed to grow because it still received the same flat rate per prescription from the Government. The cheaper products meant less cash flowed through its tills, causing sales to fall 2.6 per cent to 22.4billion. Challenging conditions: Chairman Stefano Pessina said: 'We have again delivered a double digit growth in underlying profit after tax.' But unfavourable currency conversions the firm has wholesale operations in 20 countries and a focus on higher margin health and beauty products also played a part. Tennessee- Medical professionals are concerned about the rise in the number of infants born addicted to prescription drugs in the U.S. Known medically asneonatal abstinence syndrome, babies born with a drug dependency will require small doses of an opiate, such as morphine, until they can be weaned off and their withdrawal symptoms are brought under control. According to an Associated Press report, staff at the East Tennessee Childrens Hospital in Knoxville expect to treat 320 children this year for drug dependence, up from 283 the year prior and 33 in 2008. According to the report, the East Tennessee Childrens Hospital neonatal units dedicates approximately half of its beds to newborns being treated for drug addiction. The agitation caused by withdrawal have led medical staff to place mittens on the infants hands to prevent them from scratching and rubbing their own faces.
