Edinburgh Stand-Off: Armed Siege At Pharmacy

Posted: Published on May 16th, 2013

Police surrounded a pharmacy in Edinburgh's Royal Mile in an armed stand-off with a man and woman. The pair - who were believed to be wielding weapons - caused a disturbance that saw a large section of the famous stretch of road sealed off. Officers later led the male suspect out of the Royal Mile Pharmacy in handcuffs as the siege came to an end. Paramedics were then seen entering the building, before a woman was taken out on a stretcher. A spokesman for Police Scotland had earlier said: "We are currently in attendance at a business where a male and female are causing a disturbance inside. "The male and female are believed to be in possession of a bladed weapon and officers are in the process of getting them out of the building." Eyewitness Mayte Fernaudez, 27, who lives on the Royal Mile, said she saw a man lock himself inside with four or five other people. "I saw one man in the pharmacy lock the door," she said. "The police couldn't get in. I think the man was in his late 20s or early 30s.There were four or five other people in the pharmacy. I think there was … Continue reading

Pharmacy at Putney General Store

Posted: Published on May 16th, 2013

Thursday May 16, 2013 PUTNEY -- Back when the Putney Historical Society was looking for a new owner for the Putney General Store, there was talk of bringing a pharmacy to town. With an aging population, and no pharmacy within a 10-mile radius, historical society volunteers thought a pharmacy would be a good anchor for the rebuilt store. Since then, the historical society has had an owner who was a butcher and also brought his own Chinese food to the business. Now, as the business gets ready to change hands, Putney will soon get its own pharmacy. Jim Heal, who has been the director of the pharmacy at Grace Cottage Hospital in Townshend, is going to be the new owner of the Putney General Store with his wife Jane. Heal managed the in-patient and out-patient pharmacy services at Messenger Valley Pharmacy, a Grace Cottage Hospital business. Once he has his license, Heal will run the Putney Pharmacy out of the top floor of the general store. Katy Aldridge and Brad Hammond, who have owned Katys Great Food and Take Out in East Dummerston and Newfane, and The Vermont Maple Cookie Company, are going to run and manage the cafe. The … Continue reading

'Off-the-shelf' virus-specific T-cells fight viral infections in stem cell transplant patients

Posted: Published on May 15th, 2013

HOUSTON Viral infections present deadly threats to patients who have received donor blood, marrow and cord stem cells transplants and are immune deficient while their transplants begin to work. When drugs fail, T-cells specially engineered to target the viruses could help, but generating those when needed presents a major barrier. In a new study that appears online in the journal Blood (http://bloodjournal.hematologylibrary.org.ezproxyhost.library.tmc.edu/content/early/2013/04/22/blood-2013-02-486324.full.pdf), researchers led by those at Baylor College of Medicine (www.bcm.edu) found that previously banked third party T-cells that specifically targeted three viruses that threaten recipients of such stem cell transplants offer a potent remedy for patients for whom antiviral drugs are not working. In their study, the BCM researchers generated a bank of 32 cell lines specific for three viruses Epstein-Barr, cytomegalovirus and adenovirus. Each was characterized to identify which viruses it could see or recognize so the investigators could identify the most suitable line for each patient. They used cells from 18 of these lines to treat 50 patients from eight centers across the country that had undergone a stem cell transplant and were suffering from a severe viral infection that had not responded to conventional treatment. Commonly, patients who undergo these stem cell transplants are immune … Continue reading
