Sandy Hook Shooter Adam Lanza Had No Drugs, Alcohol In System

Posted: Published on May 13th, 2013

Toxicology tests show that Adam Lanza had no alcohol or drugs in his body when he shot and killed 20 first-graders and six women at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown on Dec. 14. The tests were conducted as part of the autopsy by state Chief Medical Examiner Dr. H. Wayne Carver II. Sources said his final report has been turned over to state prosecutors and investigators. Law enforcement sources familiar with the test results said that Lanza, 20, had no traces of alcohol or any illegal drugs such as cocaine or marijuana in his body. The sources also said that there is no trace of antidepressants or anti-psychotic medications. A toxicology exam searches for trace amount of hundreds of drugs from aspirin to antidepressants. Sources said testing for marijuana is a specific, separate test which Carver ordered in this case. It is unclear whether Lanza took medication or used illegal drugs or alcohol. Search warrant records released by state police do not indicate whether drugs or alcohol were found when investigators searched the Newtown home Lanza shared with his mother. Lanza shot and killed Nancy Lanza in the home before he went to the school. The warrants do indicate … Continue reading

And a study published last year said more than 13,000 infants nationwide were affected in 2009. He's less than two weeks old, but he has the telltale signs of a baby in pain: a sore on his chin where he's rubbed the skin raw, along with a scratch on his cheek. Human Immune-Boosting Cancer Drugs Seen Extending Lives

Posted: Published on May 13th, 2013

Merck & Co. (MRK), Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. (BMY) and Roche Holding AG (ROG) have opened a new front against cancer with the next generation of experimental drugs that use the human immune system to seek and destroy tumor cells. The new therapies have the potential to reap billions of dollars in sales while lengthening patient remissions, said doctors and analysts awaiting study results to be released this week as part of the American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting that starts May 31. Building on the success of Bristol-Myers Yervoy drug for melanoma that reached the market in 2011, drugmakers are devising more potent immune therapies or combining treatments for maximum effectiveness. They are also testing the new medicines in more types of cancers, including lung and breast. If the new generation of immune therapies lives up to its promise, this is going to be a paradigm shift for treating cancer, said Merck senior vice president Gary Gilliland in an interview. We are pretty good at shrinking tumors, but not good at getting rid of them. Immune therapy is a way to begin to approach that. It will take at least a year before scientists will be able to determine whether … Continue reading

Bill would regulate 'biosimilar' drugs

Posted: Published on May 13th, 2013

SACRAMENTO Two of the nation's largest biotech companies Amgen Inc. of Thousand Oaks and Genentech Inc. of South San Francisco are fighting in Sacramento to keep a tight grip on some of their most lucrative drugs. At stake is a potential market worth tens of billions of dollars for pricey biological medicines they make from human blood, serums, bacterial cultures, viruses and other microorganisms. They are used to treat cancers, immune disorders and many other complex diseases. But now other drug manufacturers want to make and sell "biosimilars." These are drugs that would be similar to biological medicines but not identical like generic drugs. These biosimilar drugs would have to be certified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as "interchangeable" substitutes. The FDA has not yet spelled out how this would work. On Monday, the Senate Appropriations Committee will get a taste of the biosimilar debate. It will consider SB 598, a bill by Sen. Jerry Hill (D-San Mateo) to regulate the use of these injectable, biosimilar drugs. His legislation would enable doctors to restrict the use of biosimilars and require pharmacists to keep records of their dispensing. Hill said it's a matter of drug safety. "SB 598 allows … Continue reading

Sex Supplements May Contain Hidden, Harmful Drugs

Posted: Published on May 13th, 2013

Consumers should not buy sexual enhancement supplements, either online or in stores, because the products may contain undisclosed drugs that could cause serious harm, medical experts say. Although advertisements on sex supplements purport that the products improve sexual function, there is no evidence to support these claims, said Dr. Pieter Cohen, an assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and a general internist at Cambridge Health Alliance in Boston. In fact, there is no non-prescription product that has any proven benefit for helping with erections, Cohen said. Oftentimes manufacturers secretly add prescription drugs, such as sildenafil (sold under the brand name Viagra) or tadalafil (brand name Cialis), so that customers continue to use the products, Cohen said. Sometimes these undisclosed drugs are slightly modified versions of existing drugs, which are completely experimental and have not been shown to be safe, Cohen said. "These products either do not work, or if they do work, are potentially harmful," because they contain undisclosed drugs, Cohen said. In 2009, sex supplements tainted with high doses of diabetes medication caused more than 12 deaths in Asia. If doctors, lawmakers and legislatures don't act soon to reduce exposure to these supplements, more deaths could follow, … Continue reading

By Dahl Erickson on May 13, 2013 in Featured, Sports In a school year where close competition with Powell High School has been the norm, the 3A West Regionals in Lander was no exception. The Star Valley Braves, carried by strong performances in the sprints, distance and throwing events edged Powell 147.0 to 136.0. Cody was third with 112.0 team points while Jackson was close behind with 110.0. The Braves got three championship performances out of senior Reno Averill who took the 100 meter, 200 meter and triple jump events. Averill placed second in the long jump to Lymans Bobby Wingeleth. Ryan Brough was perhaps the surprise of the meet as he edged out the competition by just 0.2 seconds in the 110 hurdles to win the event and then duplicated the win in the 300 meter hurdles as well. David Livingston placed first in the 400 meter run and was second to team mate Averill in the 200. He also placed second in the 800 meter run.
