The Sky-High Price of Chemotherapy: Why Do Cancer Drugs Cost So Much?

Posted: Published on May 9th, 2013

As if its not bad enough to find out you have cancer, nearly all cancer patients have to also contend with how to pay for treatment, including somehow managing the sky-high cost of drugs (chemotherapy). It seems like insult to injury (quite literally), right? Overall, cancer drug prices are skyrocketing. Of the 12 drugs approved by the Food and Drug Administration for various cancer conditions in 2012, 11 were priced above $100,000 for a year of treatment. Writing in an op-ed in the New York Times in October 2012, three physicians at New York Citys Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center noted that the typical new cancer drug coming on the market a decade ago cost $4,500 per month (in 2012 dollars); since 2010 the median price has been around $10,000. These and other injustices led an international group of doctors to band together and call for lowering the cost of chemotherapy drugs. In the medical journal Blood the physiciansall of whom specialize in treating a form of leukemia, or cancer of the bloodwrote that cancer drug costs are too high, unsustainable, may compromise access of needy patients to highly effective therapy, and are harmful to the sustainability of our national … Continue reading

Board votes unanimously against Bauder Pharmacy

Posted: Published on May 9th, 2013

The Iowa Pharmacy Board unanimouslyvoted Thursday to deny a request from Bauder Pharmacy to reverse the revocation of its controlled substances license while it appeals the decision. The board filed charges in May 2012 against Pharmacist Mark Graziano and the pharmacy after an audit found 740,888 hydrocodone pain pills were missing. Graziano faced 27 administrative charges and the pharmacy 26 charges. In April, the board ruled for an indefinite suspension of Graziano's pharmacist license as well as immediate suspension of the license of Bauder Pharmacy to dispense controlled substances. Bauder Pharmacy filed a petition for judicial review of the decision in Polk County District Court and filed a petition to stay the revocation and paying of a $25,000 civil penalty. Thursday, the stay was denied by the board. The board said it reached the decision because Bauder Pharmacy is not a secure environment for controlled substances, and it failed to show that it is likely to prevail during the judicial review. Bauder Pharmacy in Des Moines has been in business since 1916. Read the rest here: Board votes unanimously against Bauder Pharmacy … Continue reading

FDA Inspection Triggers Recall by Florida Pharmacy

Posted: Published on May 9th, 2013

The Food and Drug Administration warned doctors and pharmacists Wednesday to avoid drugs made by a Florida specialty pharmacy called The Compounding Shop, due to potential safety problems uncovered by health inspectors. The St. Petersburg, Fla.-based pharmacy has agreed to recall all of its sterile drugs and is in the process of notifying customers, the FDA said in a statement. The agency said health care professionals should quarantine drugs from the company and not administer them to patients. The Compounding Shop is a compounding pharmacy, which means it mixes custom formulations of drugs to meet doctors' specifications. In recent weeks the FDA has cracked down on compounding pharmacies across the country, triggering several national recalls. The wave of inspections comes in the wake of a nationwide fungal meningitis outbreak last year tied to contaminated drugs from a Massachusetts pharmacy. The outbreak sickened more than 700 Americans and killed more than 50 others. The FDA said a recent inspection of The Compounding Shop raised concerns about sterility problems with company drugs that could lead to bacterial contamination. "If an injectable drug product that is intended to be sterile is contaminated, it could result in a life-threatening infection in patients," said Janet … Continue reading
