Posted: Published on May 8th, 2013

By Blazio Banda, Nyasa Times Email This Post Government says drugs availability in hospitals is normalising following the delivery of 80 percent of medicine and other pharmaceutical which the Central Medical Stores Trust (CMST) has procured following the recent open tenders. Minister of Health Catherine Gitano Hara told reporters at a news conference in Lilongwe. We have had a lot of supplies through well-wishers; I would like to thank Her Excellency Dr. Joyce Banda for the initiatives she carried out sending SOS to the world over. We have received medical supplies that we have been sending to our various hospitals. The President went to the United Kingdom and she managed to get 16 million pounds of drugs, said the minister. Hara said President Banda and Ministry of Health officials have let CMST to work independently and did not interfere with the process of awarding contracts in the emergency tender. Gotani Hara: Reduce the drug stock-outs Meanwhile, the trust has cancelled contracts for some of the suppliers who have delayed their deliveries by April 16, 2013 deadline. Research and Markets: Pain Therapeutics – Drugs, Markets and Companies – Updated 2013 Report

Posted: Published on May 8th, 2013

DUBLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/5lb27t/pain_therapeutics) has announced the addition of Jain PharmaBiotech's new report "Pain Therapeutics - Drugs, Markets and Companies" to their offering. This report describes the latest concepts of pathomechanisms of pain as a basis for management and development of new pharmacotherapies for pain. Major segments of the pain market are arthritis, neuropathic pain and cancer pain. Because pain is a subjective sensation, it is difficult to evaluate objectively in clinical trials. Various tools for pain measurement are described, including brain imaging. Most of the currently used analgesic drugs fall into the categories of opioids and nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs such as COX-2 inhibitors. Non-opioid analgesics include ketamine, a N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonist. Adjuvant analgesics include antidepressants and antiepileptic drugs used for the treatment of neuropathic pain. Management of pain is multidisciplinary and includes both pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods such as acupuncture, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation and surgery. Various pain syndromes require different approaches in management, for example, the main category of drugs for migraine are triptans such as sumatriptan. Drug delivery is an important consideration in pain treatment. Controlled release preparations provide a steady delivery of analgesics. Well-known non-injection methods such astransdermal, pulmonary and intranasal application have been … Continue reading

Drugs supply operation men jailed

Posted: Published on May 8th, 2013

7 May 2013 Last updated at 07:59 ET A former soldier who turned to drugs after his experiences in the Gulf War has been jailed for almost seven years. Daniel Boag, 46, from Dundee was among five people who have been jailed for their roles in a drugs operation which saw amphetamine and cocaine ferried between Glasgow and Dundee. The High Court in Edinburgh heard how a tip-off led to police surveillance then subsequent arrests. The men admitted being concerned in the supply of drugs. Boag was jailed for six years and eight months, while Andrew Cox from Broughty Ferry was jailed for five years and nine months. Grant Carnegie from Dundee and Philip Guthrie, who said he was homeless but has a house in South Queensferry, were both jailed for four-and-a-half years. Stephen Hutton, from Dundee, was sentenced to three years and nine months. Advocate depute Andrew Brown QC, prosecuting, told the court that in August last year Tayside Police were informed that Cox was involved in the supply of drugs between Glasgow and Dundee. The court heard he was the man who paid the bills when Carnegie hired vehicles and drove to Glasgow or Motherwell. The rest is … Continue reading

People’s Pharmacy: Why beets lower blood pressure

Posted: Published on May 8th, 2013

Doctors love scientific explanations for how things work. That is why they are quick to prescribe medications for a variety of conditions. Food and Drug Administration approval provides reassuring evidence of effectiveness. Dietary supplements, herbs and home remedies rarely have scientific support and usually lack an explanation for the way they work. That may be why it is hard for physicians to recommend such treatments. There is, however, a growing body of scientific research supporting the use of beet juice to lower high blood pressure. Investigators even have a mechanism to explain how beetroot (Beta vulgaris) works to help control hypertension (Hypertension online, April 15, 2013). Scientists knew that a natural compound called nitrite in the bloodstream helps blood vessels relax and lowers blood pressure. But how? And does this work in people with hypertension as well? To find out, they did research in rats that develop hypertension spontaneously. They identified an enzyme called xanthine oxidoreductase (XOR) in the red blood cells called erythrocytes. This enzyme converts nitrate to nitrite, which is then turned into nitric oxide. This is the compound that relaxes vessel walls and reduces blood pressure. Figuring out how to control blood pressure in rats is interesting, … Continue reading
