Attorney (866) 735-1102 Ext 530 Are you reading the inserts that come with prescription drugs? The pages of fine print about side effects, precautions and potential drug reactions? You should be reading, particularly if youre taking sleeping aids like Ambien or the generic version zolpidem. Last week ABC and CBS news reported about an alarming increase in the number of patients seen in the ER, as a result of taking zolpidem medications. The FDA expresses specific concern about women, whose adverse reactions to zolpidem have risen substantially in the last several years. From 2005 to 2010 there was a 274% increase in number of women in the ER because of the medication68% of all cases. Women clear the drug from their system more slowly than men, putting them at increased risk. The extended-release form of the drug is considered more worrisome according to the … Continue reading

Clinical Success Rates for New Cancer Drugs Doubled From the Mid-1990s to Early-2000s, According to the Tufts Center …

Posted: Published on May 7th, 2013

BOSTON, MA--(Marketwired - May 7, 2013) - Clinical success rates for new cancer drugs doubled between the mid-1990s to the early 2000s, while the number of new cancer drugs entering clinical testing increased 50 percent during the same time, according to an analysis recently completed by the Tufts Center for the Study of Drug Development. Clinical success rates -- which reflect the share of investigational new compounds entering clinical testing that eventually obtain marketing approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration -- rose from 9.9 percent in the mid-1990s to 19.8 percent in the early-2000s, the study found. The clinical success rate for new cancer drugs entering clinical testing over the entire study period was 13 percent. "That success rates increased during the 12 years we examined suggests, while drug development remains highly complex, drug companies are making headway in improving the development process," said Joseph A. DiMasi, Tufts CSDD director of economic analysis, who served as principal investigator on the study. He added, "Lower transition rates between Phase I and Phase II studies, and between Phase II and Phase III studies, suggest that early termination of less promising candidates early on helps improve later transition rates." DiMasi said … Continue reading

Certain migraine drugs taken when pregnant may lower baby's IQ

Posted: Published on May 7th, 2013

U.S. health regulators are warning doctors and women of child-bearing age that half-a-dozen medications used to treat migraine headaches can decrease children's intelligence if taken while their mothers are pregnant. The Food and Drug Administration said Monday that the drugs, including Depakote and Depacon, should never be taken by pregnant women for the prevention of migraine headaches. The pills, which all contain the ingredient valproate sodium, already carry a boxed warning about the risk of birth defects. But the FDA said it is adding new warnings to the drugs after a study showed they decreased IQ scores in children whose mothers took them while pregnant. "We have even more data now that show the risks to the children outweigh any treatment benefits for this use," said Russell Katz, the FDA's director for neurology drugs. Earlier this year, researchers at Emory University reported that valproate-containing drugs were connected with an 8 to 11 point reduction in IQ scores for children at age 6. The study compared children whose mothers had taken different classes of neurological drugs while pregnant. The results supported similar findings from when the children were age 3. Depakote and similar drugs are also used to treat bipolar disorder … Continue reading

Pfizer Goes Direct With Online Viagra Sales To Men

If you're interested in buying Viagra, Pfizer, the drug's maker, will now sell it to you from its official website. If you're interested in buying Viagra, Pfizer, the drug's maker, will now sell it to you from its official website. The ubiquitous blue-toned TV ads for Viagra look downright tame compared with Pfizer's latest gambit for the impotence remedy. Pfizer is now selling the drug directly from the official Viagra website. Men still need a prescription for the diamond-shaped blue pills. But instead of going to the pharmacy in person, or taking their chances buying from an online pharmacy of unknown repute, men will be able to buy Viagra from the maker of the drug itself and have it shipped to their homes. To be clear, Pfizer isn't getting into the pharmacy business. The CVS drugstore chain will take care of processing and fulfillment. Still, the direct form of selling from a Pfizer website is quite a departure from the typical way that prescription drugmakers go about their business. Pfizer says this company-sponsored approach offers two advantages. Men who are embarrassed about going into a pharmacy to fill a Viagra prescription won't have to. The official website will also give … Continue reading
