Drugs testing 'needs ramping up'

Posted: Published on May 4th, 2013

Drugs testing out of competition needs "ramping up" after the Godolphin doping scandal, says British Horseracing Authority chief executive Paul Bittar. Trainer Mahmood Al Zarooni was banned for eight years after 11 horses tested positive for anabolic steroids. "People in this country genuinely have a dim view about the use of these types of drugs," Bittar told BBC Sport. "The testing in training programme, does it mean we need to ramp it up a bit? I think it does." I certainly don't believe the use of anabolic steroids is widespread throughout the industry A second Newmarket trainer faces a BHA inquiry for giving racehorses banned steroids. Gerard Butler told the Independent several of his horses had treatment for injured joints, but he had been assured the substance did not breach rules. Official figures state that between 600 and 700 tests were carried out last year as part of the testing in training sampling programme. There are around 20,000 racehorses in Britain, which equates roughly to a one-in-28 chance of a horse being tested while in training. In raceday testing for 2012, 7,182 of 90,174 runners were checked - about one in 13. Read more: Drugs testing 'needs ramping up' … Continue reading

It's all about the money in the multi-billion dollar fake drug industry

Posted: Published on May 4th, 2013

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - When your budget is tight and the internet is so available or you just want anonymity, it's quite convenient to order your drugs online. But buyer beware. "That product is most likely coming from some deplorable, unsanitary, horrible factory somewhere in the Asia-Pacific region, or perhaps someplace else in the world," said Matt Bassiur, vice president of global security for Pfizer. Bassiur fights a different kind of war on drugs: counterfeit pharmaceuticals -- a multi-billion dollar industry. "It's very difficult to tell when you're buying your pharmaceuticals online where the actual pharmaceutical is coming from," said Bassiur. "In fact, there are many people in the United States who feel that they are buying from a Canadian pharmacy." I went online to see just how many sites offer well-known, frequently used drugs. The sources seem endless. There are savings, bargains and promises of a happier, healthier life and the chance to buy without a prescription. The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy looked at 10,000 websites offering pharmaceuticals and found 97 percent do not meet the patient safety specifications required. Not only do the counterfeit drugs often have no active pharmaceutical ingredients or no therapeutic value, but … Continue reading

World-first study predicts epilepsy seizures in humans

Posted: Published on May 3rd, 2013

May 1, 2013 A small device implanted in the brain has accurately predicted epilepsy seizures in humans in a world-first study led by Professor Mark Cook, Chair of Medicine at the University of Melbourne and Director of Neurology at St Vincent's Hospital. "Knowing when a seizure might happen could dramatically improve the quality of life and independence of people with epilepsy," said Professor Cook, whose research was today published in the medical journal Lancet Neurology. Professor Cook and his team, with Professors Terry O'Brien and Sam Berkovic, worked with researchers at Seattle-based company, NeuroVista, who developed a device which could be implanted between the skull and brain surface to monitor long-term electrical signals in the brain (EEG data). They worked together to develop a second device implanted under the chest, which transmitted electrodes recorded in the brain to a hand-held device, providing a series of lights warning patients of the high (red), moderate (white), or low (blue), likelihood of having a seizure in the hours ahead. The two year study included 15 people with epilepsy aged between 20 and 62 years, who experienced between two and 12 seizures per month and had not had their seizures controlled with existing treatments. … Continue reading
