Combination Drugs Are The Future Of The European Hepatitis B And C Therapeutics Markets, Says Frost & Sullivan

Posted: Published on May 1st, 2013

Benefits include improved drug efficiency, reduced pill burden, and lower dosage frequency The limited efficacy and negative side-effects associated with current therapeutics for Hepatitis B and C are highlighting the urgent need for new, improved alternatives. Combination therapies offering better clinical outcomes are coming to the fore and look set to transform the European market for Hepatitis B and C. New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (http://www.lifesciences.frost.com), Analysis of European Hepatitis B and C Therapeutics Markets, finds that the Hepatitis B market earned revenues of $1.26B in 2012 and estimates this to reach $1.89B in 2019, while the Hepatitis C market is projected to expand from $2.40B to $3.66B over the same time period. The therapeutic segments covered include interferons and nucleoside analogues for Hepatitis B, and Standard of Care (Peginterferon alfa and Ribavirin) and protease inhibitors for Hepatitis C. The side effects associated with interferon-based therapeutics such as fever, headache, fatigue, muscle and joint pain, shivering, and the ineffective response to Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) genotype 1 patients are motivating the development of combination therapies. Improved drug efficiency, reduced pill burden and lower dosage frequency are among the common advantages related to the use of combination drugs, notes Frost … Continue reading

Dangerous diet trend

by Christine LaCroix azfamily.com Posted on April 30, 2013 at 11:47 PM Updated today at 12:00 AM PHOENIX -- A prescription drug has users hoping for quick and easy weight loss, and for many it works, but not without some dangerous side effects. Its like doing meth, essentially, said Dr. Michael Yasinski, a Valley psychiatrist, referring to people who use the drug Adderall without a prescription. Adderall is the brand-name prescription drug successfully used to treat people who suffer from ADHA. Yasinksi said he is seeing more patients using Adderall to lose weight, even though they do not have a prescription and might not know how much to take, putting them at risk for serious health complications. It works very well. It takes away your appetite, makes you lose weight, speeds up your metabolism, he said. But it also raises your heart rate and your blood pressure. Yasinski said Adderall is widely prescribed, and it is easy for dieters without a prescription to buy pills from friends. It is essentially turning these kids into little drug dealers, he said. Dieters looking to lose weight from Adderall are also getting younger. What used to be a trend in college-age and above … Continue reading

Veep calls for increased intelligence on drugs

Posted: Published on May 1st, 2013

General News of Wednesday, 1 May 2013 Source: Daily Graphic The Vice-President, Mr Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur, has called for the intensification of intelligence gathering to block the sources of finance that sustain drug trafficking on the African continent. He said traffickers had become sophisticated and sometimes teamed up with some financial institutions to launder the proceeds from their illegal activities, hence the need for the alertness. Mr Amissah-Arthur made the call when a delegation of the West Africa Commission on Drugs (WACD), led by Commissioner Justice Bankole Thompson, paid a courtesy call on him at the Flagstaff House in Accra Tuesday. The WACD aims to mobilise public awareness and political commitment, develop evidence-based policy recommendations on how to address drug trafficking and dependency and promote local and regional capacities to deal with drug trafficking and dependency issues. The Vice-President expressed grave concerns over the way drug traffickers had infiltrated educational institutions and supported the call for intensive education, particularly among the youth and organised groupings. There is the need for us to identify and confront this problem, particularly among our schoolchildren in whom the drug barons are investing now, he said. A former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, who … Continue reading

Story Created: May 1, 2013 at 6:27 PM CDT Story Updated: May 1, 2013 at 6:45 PM CDT According to officers, it did not take them long to get away with a lot of medication. Police said it likely took less than five minutes. "It's a quick grab for narcotics," said Brownsville Police Chief, Chris Lea. Brownsville police said the thieves broke into Dowling Pharmacy, and stole about 3,000 hydrocodone pills, and two pints of the liquid. "The hydrocodone tablets, they can be sold at street level for a value of anywhere from $10 to $25 a tablet," Lea said. "Drug dealers consider that an easy source of money, unfortunately." "A lot more than we can sell it for," said pharmacist Allen Primrose, who owns Main Street Pharmacy. Pharmacists said it is unfortunate, but they are not surprised. "Anybody that has a pharmacy's always concerned about theft and break-ins, but it's just part of our business, and part of life. We just have to deal with it," Primrose said. Toddler gets new windpipe from her own stem cells

Posted: Published on May 1st, 2013

By Alexandra Sifferlin, TIME.com updated 9:06 AM EDT, Wed May 1, 2013 Hannah Warren, 2, recovers in a post-op room at the Children's Hospital of Illinois in Peoria. STORY HIGHLIGHTS (TIME.com) -- Hannah Warren was born without a trachea but now has one made from plastic fibers and a stew of her own stem cells. The 2-year-old Korean Canadian has spent every day of her life in intensive care, kept alive by a tube that substituted for the windpipe that was supposed to connect her mouth to her lungs. But nearly a month after her transplant, the toddler is mostly breathing on her own and is responding to doctors and nurses. The surgery, pioneered by Dr. Paolo Macchiarini, director of the Advanced Center for Translational Regenerative Medicine at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, was only the sixth performed in the world, and Hannah was the youngest patient and first to receive the transplant in the United States. The procedure was approved by the FDA as an experimental operation for patients with very little hope of survival; being born without a trachea is fatal in 99% of cases.
