Clarifying the effect of stem cell therapy on cancer

Posted: Published on April 30th, 2013

Public release date: 28-Apr-2013 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Hilary Glover hilary.glover@biomedcentral.com 44-020-319-22370 BioMed Central Injection of human stem cells into mice with tumors slowed down tumor growth, finds research published in BioMed Central's open access journal Stem Cell Research & Therapy. Human mesenchymal stem cells (MSC), isolated from bone marrow, caused changes in blood vessels supplying the tumor, and it is this modification of blood supply which seems to impact tumor growth. The use of stem cells in treating cancer has been controversial, with some studies finding that stem cells force tumors to enter programmed cell death. However other studies find that stem cells actually promote tumor growth by inducing infiltration of new blood vessels. In attempting to sort out this puzzle researchers from INSERM groups at Universit Joseph Fourier in collaboration with CHU de Grenoble investigated the impact of MSC on already established subcutaneous or lung metastasis in mice. For both the subcutaneous and lung tumors, injection of MSC reduced cell division, consequently slowing the rate of tumor growth. Part of the mode of action of stem cells therefore appears to be due to with angiogenesis, but the mechanism behind this is still unclear. Claire Rome … Continue reading

Researchers Encouraged by Results from First American Clinical Trial for Stem Cell-Based Treatment of ALS

Posted: Published on April 30th, 2013

Newswise NEW ORLEANS (April 29, 2013) Researchers who completed the first American clinical trial involving stem cell-based treatment of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) were encouraged by the trial studys results, noting that this delivery approach could be a helpful therapeutic approach for other traumatic spine-related problems. The group focused on the safety of a direct microinjection-based technique and neural stem cell transplantation to the cervical and thoracolumbar spinal cord. Eighteen microinjection procedures delivered NSI-566RSC, a human neural stem cell, to a total of 15 patients in five cohorts. Each of the injection procedures consisted of five injections of 10l at 4mm intervals. Group A (n=6) was non-ambulatory and received unilateral (n=3) or bilateral (n=3) thoracolumbar microinjection. Groups B through E were ambulatory and received unilateral (group B, n=3) or bilateral (group C,n=3) bilateral thoracolumbar microinjection. Groups D and E received unilateral cervical (group D,n=3) or cervical plus bilateral thoracolumbar microinjection (group E,n=3). Detailed pre- and post-operative neurological outcomes were recorded, such as post-operative pain, as well as urologic, sensory and motor functions. The results of this study, Intraspinal Stem Cell Transplantation in ALS, A Phase I Trial: Cervical Microinjection Safety Outcomes, will be presented by Jonathan Patrick Riley, MD, from … Continue reading

Cryo-Save Group N.V. – Cord blood sample release for stem cell transplantation

Posted: Published on April 30th, 2013

Cryo-Save Group N.V. (Euronext: CRYO, `Cryo-Save`, or `the Group`), the leading international stem cell storage company and the largest family stem cell bank in Europe, announced a stem cell transplantation in Spain to treat Blackfan-Diamond Aneamia. It is the first time in Spain that this congenital anaemia, classified as a rare disease, has been treated using cord blood stem cells which were stored with Cryo-Save. A 4-year-old boy was treated for Blackfan-Diamond anaemia (BDA) with a stem cell transplant from his sister`s umbilical cord blood. The transplant was performed on April 25 at the Hospital del Nio Jess in Madrid, one of the most important paediatric hospitals in Spain. The transplantation was successful, and the child is expected to make a normal recovery. This pioneering treatment in Spain may herald a radical improvement in the child`s quality of life, as since birth he has required regular red blood cell transfusions. "Up until the transplantation our life was bound to red blood cell transfusions. We could hardly be happier, because now our son will be able to lead a completely normal life", said Elena, the boy`s mother. The parents had only found out about the possibility of this type of treatment … Continue reading

Faking the big O

Posted: Published on April 29th, 2013

That scene: When Harry Met Sally starring Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal It's been a long time since Meg Ryan performed her famous fake orgasm scene in the movie When Harry Met Sally which was quite outrageous at the time. But it's only now that we are beginning to see the results of some scientific research into why woman and men actually do it. Research has been hindered, no doubt, because of the difficulty in asking people about behaviour that most of them are not proud of and are unlikely to admit to. However according to a research study conducted in 2010 by Erin Cooper, a doctoral student at Temple University in Washington DC, showed that 60 per cent of women had faked an orgasm during intercourse or oral sex, at some point in their lives. The big mystery is why are women pretending? I'll have what she's having: Meg Ryan in When Harry Met Sally Originally the researchers believed it was all about stroking the male ego, but this study found that many of the women said they faked it due to their own fear of intimacy, because they felt insecure about their sexual performance or because they just … Continue reading

Ask Dr. K: Precautions for male bicyclists

Posted: Published on April 29th, 2013

Dr. Komaroff Dear Dr. K: I'm an avid biker. But could my biking lead to erectile dysfunction? Dear Reader: Biking is an excellent form of exercise. But occasionally, if men who bicycle many hours each week are not careful, it can lead to temporary erectile dysfunction. Your question caused me to review articles on this topic that have been published in medical journals. It appears that there are no studies large enough to give us a good idea of just how often bicyclists develop this condition. The risk appears to be highest for men who cycle more than three hours a week. I can't find any published research study to support my speculation, but I'll bet the risk is lower in using stationary bikes than in riding outdoors: The bumps in the road get transmitted through the bike seat. One recent study compared 142 men in a bicycle club to 83 men who did not ride bicycles and found no difference in the rate of erectile dysfunction. This does not mean that frequent riding cannot cause sexual problems, but it probably means that it doesn't happen very often. The reason avid bikers sometimes get erectile dysfunction (ED) is that the … Continue reading

Apricus, Innovus tackle bedroom disorders

Posted: Published on April 29th, 2013

In December, a small local biotech named Apricus Biosciences decided to put substantially all its eggs in one basket: male and female sexual disorders. But in tackling male erectile dysfunction, Apricus faces stiff competition from pharmaceutical giants Eli Lilly (Cialis), Pfizer (Viagra), and Bayer (Levitra). Trying to relieve female sexual dysfunction presents a completely different problem: many critics think this so-called disorder, although officially recognized by the American Psychiatric Association, is an industry marketing ploy to peddle potions of dubious value. Apricus is trying to get regulatory approval around the world for Vitaros, a topical treatment that, spread on the penis, is supposed to bring an erection faster than competitors products. It supposedly works well with men who dont respond to Viagra, but it has only been approved in Canada. Erectile dysfunction is a market of close to $5 billion. Two years ago, Cialis passed the originator, Viagra, in sales, greatly because it boasts of a high-powered drug that can be effective for up to 36 hours. In France, its called le weekender. In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration has never given the okay to any medical treatment for female sexual dysfunction, which comes in several varieties: … Continue reading

Judge approves class-action lawsuit over erectile dysfunction link to prostate, baldness drugs

Posted: Published on April 29th, 2013

A B.C. judge has certified a class- action lawsuit against a manufacturer of drugs for male prostate and baldness problems that allegedly result in ongoing sexual dysfunction. In May 2008, Michael Miller, the representative plaintiff in the case, obtained from his doctor a prescription for the drug Proscar, manufactured by Merck Frosst Canada for the treatment of hair loss. Proscar, a drug normally used for treatment of prostate problems, was given to Miller because it has the same active drug as Propecia, the companys drug for male baldness, and is cheaper. Miller claims that after about a month he became completely disinterested in sexual activity. The symptoms of sexual dysfunction increased over the following months and Miller became anxious and upset. He blames his problems on the side effects of the drug. Miller claimed that the company acted with reckless disregard and put profits before public safety by ignoring labelling changes outside of Canada and by marketing the drugs in Canada without adequate warnings. An affidavit filed by Millers lawyer said the law firm had been contacted by 281 Canadian men who wished to participate in the class action suit, 55 from B.C. The company argued that the allegations of … Continue reading
