Doctor suspended 180 days over inappropriate prescriptions

Posted: Published on April 12th, 2013

By Misti Crane The Columbus Dispatch Friday April 12, 2013 5:46 AM Dr. Robert C. Turner, who practiced with Cardinal Orthopaedic Institute, has agreed to stop treating patients for at least 180 days. The State Medical Board sent Turner, 64, a letter last year accusing him of inappropriately prescribing narcotics and excessively prescribing acetaminophen, which can cause liver damage. The board letter also said that Turner did not keep good records on several patients and gave inappropriate cortisone injections. In an agreement between the doctor and the board, he admitted to the allegations and agreed to a suspension. To practice again, he must adhere to certain conditions, including taking courses on prescribing controlled medicines and maintaining medical records. The practice has several offices in central Ohio. The board also sent a letter this week to massage therapist Heather Kochenash of Hilliard indicating that it might take action against her license based on her guilty plea to a first-degree misdemeanor last year. Kochenash, 38, was arrested in 2011 and charged with promoting prostitution. She has 30 days to request a hearing. mcrane@dispatch.com @MistiCrane Continue reading here: Doctor suspended 180 days over inappropriate prescriptions … Continue reading

Do drug company reps tell your doc everything about side effects?v

Posted: Published on April 12th, 2013

WEDNESDAY, April 10 (HealthDay News) -- Drug company salespeople provide family doctors with little or no information about the harmful effects of medicines they are promoting, a new study says. Despite this lack of knowledge, doctors are likely to start prescribing these drugs after visits from company representatives, according to the findings from questionnaires completed by American, Canadian and French doctors. The study revealed that salespeople failed to provide any information about common or serious side effects or warn doctors about types of patients who should not use the medicine in 59 percent of the promotions. "Laws in all three countries require sales representatives to provide information on harm as well as benefits," lead author Barbara Mintzes, of the University of British Columbia, said in a university news release. "But no one is monitoring these visits and there are next to no sanctions for misleading or inaccurate promotion." Serious risks were mentioned in only 6 percent of the promotions, even though 57 percent of the medicines involved in these visits came with U.S. Food and Drug Administration "black box" or Health Canada boxed warnings, which are the strongest types of drug warnings in the two countries. "We are very concerned … Continue reading

Amyris Scientists Describe Breakthrough in Development of Anti-Malarial Drug Precursor

Posted: Published on April 12th, 2013

EMERYVILLE, Calif., April 11, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Scientists from Amyris, Inc. (AMRS), a leading renewable chemicals and fuels company, published in the journal Nature the details of a major breakthrough in the field of synthetic biology that allows for the production of a key precursor to Artemisinin, the key ingredient in the world's most effective and preferred drug in combating malaria. Earlier today, pharmaceutical company Sanofi announced the launch of large-scale industrial production of Artemisinin utilizing Amyris designed strains. "Yesterday, a group of scientists led by Amyris detailed how we engineered simple baker's yeast strains to produce unprecedented concentrations of the precursor to the anti-malarial drug ingredient. Today, Amyris scientists celebrate Sanofi's successful launch of the industrial production of the world's first semi-synthetic Artemisinin utilizing Amyris designed strains," said John Melo, President & Chief Executive Officer of Amyris. "Sanofi's commercial launch of this key precursor to life-saving drugs produced with our technology underscores not only the success of Amyris's synthetic biology platform at scale but also the positive impact this technology can have on our planet," Melo concluded. Drug-addicted babies staggering issue

Posted: Published on April 12th, 2013

HUNTINGTON -- Seventy-five of every thousand babies born at Cabell Huntington Hospital have been exposed to drugs or alcohol, a staggering figure that trumps the national average of five per 1,000, according to maternal-fetal medicine experts. That statistic and many others -- as well as examples of programs working to change the culture of drug addiction and dependency in West Virginia -- were the subjects of the Seventh Annual Drug Prevention Summit Thursday at the Big Sandy Superstore Conference Center. This year's summit, the work of the Cabell County Substance Abuse Prevention Partnership, focused on drug-exposed pregnancies and fetal alcohol exposure. "'Just say no' doesn't work after the addiction is already established any more than I can say 'no' to food," said Dr. David Chaffin, Thursday's keynote speaker and director of maternal fetal medicine at Marshall's School of Medicine. "This is a monstrous tidal wave we're dealing with. What else would you call it? I want to show you what's happening and, if nothing else, set a fire in you about the rising incidence of neonatal abstinence syndrome." Neonatal abstinence syndrome, a group of problems that occur in a newborn exposed to drugs or alcohol in the mother's womb, was … Continue reading

State Suspends Polk Nurse's License Alleging Drug Abuse

Posted: Published on April 12th, 2013

Published: Thursday, April 11, 2013 at 10:20 p.m. Last Modified: Thursday, April 11, 2013 at 10:20 p.m. LAKELAND | The Florida Department of Health has suspended the license of registered nurse Damian Slifer, accusing him of drug use and not complying with substance-abuse treatment. The chain of events leading to Slifer's emergency suspension last month began on April 16, 2012. A Winter Haven Hospital human resources manager contacted Intervention Project for Nurses, a program for impaired nurses, and said Slifer was believed to be diverting pain medicine from work for his own use. Two days later, the emergency suspension order says, Slifer contacted the intervention program. He said he worked part time at Winter Haven Hospital and full time at Lakeland Regional Medical Center. He admitted to using both Dilaudid and fentanyl, another pain drug, the order says. Slifer, in his mid-20s, said he had experimented with drugs previously. He said he hurt his back in January 2011 and used leftover morphine from work to relieve the pain, the order says. Since it relieved his pain, Slifer said he began diverting more pain medication. He was using it daily by August 2011, the order says. A doctor who examined him … Continue reading
