Surveillance cams catch possible pharmacy burglary ring in progress

Posted: Published on April 12th, 2013

SOUTHAVEN, MS - (WMC-TV) - Police are investigating a possible pharmacy burglary ring in North Mississippi, where thousands of dollars in pills has been stolen. Pharmacies in Batesville, Southaven, and Olive Branch were targeted but the thefts might not stop there. Police could be dealing with a pharmacy theft ring that stretches into Tennessee and Alabama. One of the burglaries was caught on camera. Four break-ins in the past week have pharmacists like Ann Pitts uneasy. "Kind of a little nervous down here," said Pitts. "It's pretty obvious that it's probably going to the street market," said Lt. Mark Little, Southaven Police Department. Pitts works at Super Drugs in Horn Lake. She was upset to hear that the nearby Oliver's Pharmacy lost about $25,000 in Oxycontin and Loritabs, drugs that can triple in value on the street. In the surveillance video the suspects can be seen using a crowbar to break open the front door. Once inside the pharmacy, the crook filled a plastic container full of prescription narcotics and then took off in less than 2 minutes. Good planning at DeForest pharmacy helped police nab suspected oxycodone robber

Posted: Published on April 12th, 2013

SANDY CULLEN | Wisconsin State Journal | scullen@madison.com | 608-252-6137 The staff at DeForest Hometown Pharmacy knew it was just a matter of time before the man wanted in a string of oxycodone robberies from Lincoln, Neb., to northern Illinois would target their store at 645 N. Main St. And they were ready, with a well-rehearsed plan they executed Tuesday, resulting in the arrest of Tony Taylor, 35, of Delavan. Madison police Detective Sgt. Dave Miller said Taylor, who is being held in Dane County Jail, is the prime suspect in more than 20 incidents throughout the region that have been the focus of a team of investigators from more than a dozen agencies. Since November, Miller said, more than $87,000 worth of the prescription painkiller has been stolen from pharmacies in a series of robberies, all but a few believed to have been committed by Taylor. "We were on hyper alert," Jim Butcher, manager of DeForest Hometown Pharmacy, where staff knew the robber typically struck around 4 p.m. "DeForest police had been in several times to remind us what to do" if he came in, Butcher said, adding, "We rehearsed that with the staff." As soon as Taylor walked … Continue reading

Epilepsy sufferer travels to London for specialist help

Posted: Published on April 12th, 2013

Epilepsy sufferer travels to London for specialist help Friday, April 12, 2013 A woman with severe epilepsy, who has waited more than two years for vital tests, has travelled to London to begin a process that could lead to life-changing treatment. However, the HSE was forced to reverse its decision on foot of negative publicity when the Irish Examiner highlighted Ms OConnors plight and the fact that appropriate services are not available in Ireland. While there are two units one at Beaumont and another at Cork University Hospital equipped to carry out the kind of specialist monitoring Ms OConnor requires, neither is open because of a lack of money to staff them. Yesterday, she flew to London with her mother Attracta, to meet with Prof John Duncan, a consultant neurologist specialising in epilepsy, in the first step of a process she hopes will lead to better-controlled epilepsy and improved quality of life. Ms OConnor, who is blind, met Prof Duncan at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queens St, London, for interview. She hopes to be sent shortly for specialist testing which will help determine if she is a suitable candidate for surgery. When successful, surgery can reduce the … Continue reading

International autism conference starts Friday at Pasadena Convention Center

Posted: Published on April 12th, 2013

A three-day conference on autism and stress-related disorders that starts Friday at the Pasadena Convention center will feature nationally and internationally known clinicians, researchers and leaders in the field, including renowned pediatrician Dr. T. Berry Brazelton. The nonprofit Profectum Foundation's 1st International Conference, Three Dimensional Thinking in Autism and Stress Related Disorders, coincides with Autism Awareness Month and is intended to serve as an educational seminar and a training opportunity. Experts in mental health, autism treatment, parenting stress and sensory processing disorders will share their expertise with clinicians, parents and families. "The adage is if we know one child with autism, we know one child," said Dr. Ricki Robinson, a board member of the Profectum Foundation and a La Canada Flintridge pediatrician for autistic children. "They are so different from each other. They fit the diagnosis of autism but that doesn't help us figure out the right treatment approach for the right kid. That's what we do at Profectum. We've learned to integrate the treatment to be the best for the individual child, family and community. " The foundation's approach, she said, is that nothing is better than making human connections to help advance those with autism. "It's through these … Continue reading
