Cancer patients in Canada got weak doses of chemo drugs

Posted: Published on April 3rd, 2013

By Dana Ford, CNN updated 2:26 AM EDT, Wed April 3, 2013 Patients at four Ontario hospitals received lower-than-intended doses of two cancer drugs, officials said. STORY HIGHLIGHTS (CNN) -- Close to 1,200 patients in Canada got lower-than-intended doses of chemotherapy drugs, officials said Tuesday, in a case that is sure to upset those patients and raise concerns about how potentially life-saving drugs are handled. Cancer Care Ontario, a government agency, reported that 990 patients were affected at four hospitals: London Health Sciences Centre, Windsor Regional Hospital, Lakeridge Health and Peterborough Regional Health Centre. Another 186 patients were underdosed at Saint John Regional Hospital in New Brunswick, said hospital spokeswoman Janet Hogan. The drugs in question were bought by the hospitals from a supplier that produces and labels the medications, according to Cancer Care Ontario. The supplier was identified as Marchese Hospital Solutions, a company spokesman said. "We are, of course deeply concerned whenever any question is raised about the quality of our work," the company said in a statement. "Our preliminary investigation of this issue leads us to be confident that we have met the quality specifications of the contract we are honored to have been awarded." Go here … Continue reading

By Sarah Hale on Apr 2, 2013 in Afton, News The Afton Town Council has placed a temporary moratorium on new commercial construction. The moratorium prevents building permits from being granted by the town to new commercial construction projects. The sunset date for the moratorium is Tuesday, April 9. According to information provided by the Town of Afton, time is needed to iron out details in the areas of building plan review inspection and building inspection as it relates to the town code. The three week moratorium allows the town time to put language together stating the towns requirements in such areas. The moratorium does not affect residential building permits or the remodeling of existing commercial properties. During the April 9 meeting of the Afton Town Council, an emergency ordinance stating the towns regulations regarding building plan review inspection and building inspection will be presented. The emergency ordinance will be in place until the town passes an ordinance stating the towns requirements. The moratorium passed on a vote four to one. Councilman Kevin Kilroy opposed. For more information on building permits within the Town of Afton, contact the town hall at 885-8696. The rest is here: Buy Penis Growth Oil … Continue reading

Compounding pharmacy recall left 100 Children’s Hospital patients without antibiotic solution

Posted: Published on April 3rd, 2013

By Chelsea Conaboy, Globe Staff A recall and production shutdown at a Woburn compounding pharmacy last month left about 100 patients treated for bladder conditions at Boston Childrens Hospital without a product they need to keep catheters clear of infection. Speaking at a legislative hearing Tuesday, Childrens Hospital pharmacy director Al Patterson said Pallimed Solutions, Inc., made an antibiotic solution that these patients need to flush their catheters regularly. State regulators ordered the compounder to stop making and recall about two dozen products that require sterile production processes after inspectors found visible contaminants in several vials in the facility. Health care providers need greater assurances that compounding pharmacies they rely on are producing safe and reliable products, Patterson said before a joint legislative committee reviewing proposals to better regulate the industry after tainted drugs from New England Compounding Center in Framingham caused a national outbreak of fungal meningitis and other infections. Outside the hearing room, Patterson said patients families are struggling to find another pharmacy to provide the solution, which is prescribed by doctors and typically shipped by the pharmacy directly to a patient. Given upheaval in the industry, he said, other compounders are reluctant to take on new patients. … Continue reading
