'Sponge' Drug Shows Promise For Treating Hepatitis C

Posted: Published on March 28th, 2013

Particles of the hepatitis C virus are imaged with an electron microscope. Particles of the hepatitis C virus are imaged with an electron microscope. With an estimated 2 million baby boomers infected with hepatitis C, the disease has reached epidemic levels among Americans age 48 to 68. Doctors can now cure about 70 percent of hepatitis C cases, but the drugs' side effects can be severe. And many Americans are still left with a disease that can cause liver failure and cancer. So doctors have been desperate for better treatment options. One of the drugs in the pipeline, called miravirsen, may be able to stop the virus with little side effects, doctors from University Health Network in Toronto, Canada, reported Wednesday. Their findings, published in The New England Journal of Medicine, are preliminary the doctors gave the drug to just 27 patients for about a month. (Another 9 patients in the study were given a placebo.) But the study is still drawing attention because it offers proof-of-concept for a whole new class of drugs, called RNA interference drugs. RNAi drugs work differently than traditional antivirals and antibiotics. And some scientists think they may have the potential to treat many illnesses, … Continue reading

Study Says Byetta Side Effects Could Include Damage to the Pancreas, Notes Rottenstein Law Group

Posted: Published on March 28th, 2013

A recent study says that diabetes drug Byetta, manufactured by Amylin Pharmaceutical in conjunction with Eli Lilly and Company, could cause damage to the pancreaseven cancer. The Rottenstein Law Group, which is accepting clients in Byetta lawsuits, maintains a Byetta Legal Information Center on its website designed to provide more information on Byetta side effects and lawsuits. New York, NY (PRWEB) March 25, 2013 The UCLA study showed increased evidence of pre-cancerous cellular changes associated with Type 2 diabetes treatments, according to Bloomberg. The increase in changes topped 40 percent. In 2007, two years after Byetta went to market, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said it had received many reports of pancreatitis from Byetta users, the article said. The FDA recently issued a report** indicating it was evaluating the Byetta side effects claims of unpublished research studies. Rochelle Rottenstein, principal of the Rottenstein Law Group, said that the growing body of evidence*** of Byettas alleged pancreatic side effects means that patients should be vigilant about their rights. Patients trust drug companies to produce helpfulnot potentially harmfulmedications, Rottenstein said. It is important that patients understand that if they believe they have been harmed there are advocates available to help them … Continue reading

Stafford Food Center will be downsizing as developer revamps site

Posted: Published on March 28th, 2013

STAFFORD-- The Stafford Food Center, a town landmark on West Main Street, will be downsizing but not going out of business as a real estate developer plans to revamp the site. At a Planning and Zoning Commission meeting Tuesday an official with a Springfield-based commercial real estate development company presented a "concept plan" for the site that included two smaller buildings in place of the current building that houses the food center. Peter LaPointe, vice president of real estate and construction with The Colvest Group, presented the plan to the PZC, which listened but took no action. LaPointe said he "wasnt at liberty to say" who might be occupying the two new buildings because there is no tenant under lease for either building yet, although he hinted that one might be a pharmacy. Shortages Impact Compounding Pharmacies

Posted: Published on March 28th, 2013

VOL. 128 | NO. 60 | Wednesday, March 27, 2013 In recent years, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has reported an increase in the number of drug shortages and discontinuations. The number of drug shortages reported to the FDA gained 41 percent to 251 shortages in 2011, compared to 178 shortages reported in 2010. The agency says it continues to see an increasing number of shortages, including drugs used to treat cancer, anesthetics used for patients undergoing surgery, drugs needed for emergency medicine and injectable drugs. The FDA also has reported a spike in the number of medications that have been discontinued. Brett Wright, the owner of Benevere Pharmacy in Collierville, says hes noticed an increase in the number of his clients requesting medications that are no longer commercially available. Wright, who is a pharmacist by training, opened Benevere Pharmacy in May. The pharmacy specializes in custom-making medications that are tailored to meet the medical needs of an individual patient. Sometimes compounding is needed because a patient may be allergic to a certain dye, or an elderly patient may need a medicine in a liquid or suppository form that is not available. In other cases, compounding is necessary because … Continue reading

DEA Targest UPS, FedEx in Online Rx Probe

Posted: Published on March 28th, 2013

In its ongoing effort to crack down on the nation's prescription-drug epidemic, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration has gone after doctors, pharmacists, pharmacy chains, wholesale drug suppliers, and now -- FedEx and UPS. Even though the DEA will not confirm it is engaged in the probe, both companies have disclosed in corporate filings that they are targets of a federal investigation related to packages shipped from online pharmacies. Based on the allegations, it appears federal officials are suggesting the shipping companies take responsibility for the prescription drugs inside packages they are transporting. FedEx officials have called the California-based probe "absurd and deeply disturbing," and a threat to customers' privacy. "We are a transportation company -- we are not law enforcement, we are not doctors and we are not pharmacists," FedEx spokesman Patrick Fitzgerald said in a prepared statement. Though the probe has been unfolding quietly for several years, the investigation is now gaining headlines and attention from politicians, including Winter Park congressman John Mica. In a letter sent to DEA Administrator Michele Leonhart and Attorney General Eric Holder earlier this month, Mica asked the leaders to recognize "the difficulty and unfairness of requiring those carriers to assume responsibility for the … Continue reading

New Substance Abuse Prevention Campaign Focuses on Alcoholism

Posted: Published on March 28th, 2013

Gateway Foundation Drug Treatment Supports Alcohol Awareness Month in April CHICAGO, March 26, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- More individuals than the entire population of Illinois, or 14 million American adults, meet the criteria for alcohol abuse or alcohol dependency, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Furthermore, nine out of 10 individuals with alcoholism won't seek the treatment they need for substance abuse. To address this public health concern, Gateway Foundation Alcohol & Drug Treatment is joining the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence to raise awareness of alcohol-related issues during Alcohol Awareness Month in April. In an effort to change behaviors and attitudes towards alcohol abuse, Gateway Foundation is launching a campaign that heightens awareness of low-risk drinking guidelines in comparison to risky or binge drinking that could lead to alcoholism. "In honor of Alcohol Awareness Month, we are reaching out to communities throughout Illinois with substance abuse awareness resources, like magnets, window clings and educational materials. Our goal is for adults to understand what constitutes as risky drinking and if needed, that professional help is available," says Gateway Foundation President and CEO Michael Darcy. "We encourage local businesses, schools, public sector organizations and healthcare providers … Continue reading
