Drugs runner-turned-informant has jail term cut

Posted: Published on March 28th, 2013

A MEMBER of a drugs ring who turned informer to help police bring down his drug baron boss has won a cut in his sentence on appeal. Karl Anthony Irving, 46, was abducted by heroin and crack cocaine kingpin, Ricardo McPherson, also known as Leon, after helping police to jail other people in the gang. Irving, of Great Goodwin Drive in Guildford, was jailed for two years and six months last September after being convicted of conspiracy to supply class A drugs. But senior judges sitting at Londons Court of Appeal on Monday (March 25) upheld a challenge by Irving and cut his jail term to two years to recognise his role in helping to bring the drugs gang to justice. Mr Justice Macduff said Irving twice sold small quantities of drugs to undercover police as a runner in McPhersons "significant conspiracy". He co-operated with detectives to shatter the ring by making a 999 call that resulted in several arrests and the recovery of drugs, mobile phones and other evidence. The judge said: "This resulted in McPherson, who suspected him of being responsible for the arrests, abducting and taking Irving against his will to a place where he was beaten … Continue reading

Drugs Boss Baron Smuggled 52 Tonnes Into UK

Posted: Published on March 28th, 2013

The leader of a gang who imported 52 tonnes of cocaine and cannabis into the UK has pleaded guilty to drugs smuggling and money laundering. Philip Baron, 57, ran an international smuggling operation that police described as among the top 10 uncovered in Britain. Running the operation while living abroad, the gang used what were described as ingenious methods to convey the drugs into the UK, including hiding them in machine parts and in the back of a safe. The former HGV driver from Salford had based himself in Ireland and fought extradition to the UK for two years until he was brought back by police in 2012. Authorities thought Baron ran a company which rented deckchairs in Spain; but he was actually a key figure in the smuggling ring. Twenty-eight members of the gang have already been convicted and jailed for their roles in the operation. Baron and the other dealers used "virtual offices" to pay for the services of legitimate companies to hide what they were doing, to launder their profits, and to take them out of the UK. They were eventually caught after phone calls made by an accomplice who was in prison were monitored by police. … Continue reading

Drugs increasingly being smuggled into Canada by truckers

Posted: Published on March 28th, 2013

At least a dozen truckers from the Greater Toronto Area have been charged with smuggling drugs into Canada in recent years, a trend that appears rooted in the changing nature of the drug trade. Richard Pollock has prosecuted many of the cases involving the truckers from the GTA, which he says have involved millions of dollars of cocaine being moved on trucks headed to Canadian destinations. "They're usually multi-kilo seizures, anywhere from 15 to 150 kilos," Pollock told CBC News in a recent interview. In one of the most recent cases, a Mississauga man has been accused of trying to import $10-million worth of cocaine into Canada. It was found inside a shipment that was sent from California. In Windsor, Ont., another man from Peel Region is currently on trial for attempting to smuggle 69 kilograms of cocaine into Canada, which is estimated to be worth $7-million on the street. His trial began Tuesday. Border agents have found bricks of cocaine stuffed in fruit and vegetable shipments. In other cases the drugs have been stuffed into bags and stashed in hidden compartments. Cocaine is now being moved across the border via land, rather than through the ports that were used … Continue reading

Wagoner Officials Educate Students, Parents On Dangers Of Synthetic Drugs

Posted: Published on March 28th, 2013

WAGONER, Oklahoma - A Green Country community is using education to fight the war on synthetic drugs. The drugs are sold over the counter and police say they're made to look safe, but police say they're anything but. Instead, they're highly addictive and targeted toward teens. "More and more deaths are being seen as a result of this product," said Cindy Farmer, Director of the Cherokee County juvenile drug court. Farmer used real-life stories to give teens and parents a dose of the dangers behind synthetic drugs, at a forum organized by Wagoner Schools administrators and the Wagoner Police Department. "He was boiling on the inside, his heart was racing, he gets his keys, gets his vehicle, drives 80 miles per hour down the road, crashes into a house and dies," Farmer said. 11/27/2012 Related Story: Green Country Man Speaks About Synthetic Marijuana Addiction For the past several years, Farmer has dedicated much of her time to studying the effects of man made drugs. They're most commonly known as K2 or spice. The makers of the drugs use flavors and packaging to target kids, but Farmer said there's something important missing from those labels. "Those spice products contain chemicals that … Continue reading

Drugs for Indian Poor Spark Pfizer Anger at Lost Patents

Posted: Published on March 28th, 2013

In trying to get sophisticated medicines to its neediest citizens, India is increasingly pitting its generic-pharmaceutical industry against international drugmakers, threatening their growth in emerging markets. An Indian regulatory board this month upheld a ruling that allows Natco Pharma Ltd. (NTCPH) to make a low-priced copy of Bayer AG (BAYN)s Nexavar cancer treatment. The drug is one of at least four that have had their patents weakened, revoked or rejected in India in the past year. The country also has refused a patent for Novartis AGs (NOVN) Gleevec leukemia medicine, and the Supreme Court will rule April 1 on the companys appeal of the decision. Those steps are needed to put modern medicines into the hands of Indians, according to aid groups and doctors. Western drugmakers including New York-based Pfizer Inc. (PFE) say the country, which has a $30 billion drug market thats growing 13 percent a year, is abusing international law and allowing domestic companies to profit from products discovered at Big Pharmas expense. The dispute illustrates how emerging markets are turning out be less lucrative than drugmakers expected. London-based GlaxoSmithKline Plc (GSK) has warned that so-called compulsory licensing of patented products may hurt profit growth. One advocacy group … Continue reading

Drugs Pouring Through South African Ports

Posted: Published on March 28th, 2013

Cape Town South Africa continues to lose the battle on drugs as ports of entry are increasingly used as an international gateway for the trafficking of drugs, and around a third of South African adults admit to use drugs on a recreational basis. A recently released report by the European Unions Serious and Organised Crime threat Assessment has brought attention again to South African ports as known drug gateways. This is not a new problem. The Democratic Alliance has been calling for specialised drug units to be put in place to attempt to root out the problem of drugs in South Africa. Institute of Security Studies researcher, Charles Goredema, said that most South African ports in Southern Africa are known drug gateways. Quinton Van Kerken of the Anti-Drug Alliance South Africa said yesterday that the level of drugs in South Africa have reached a critical mass, a point at which police no longer stand a chance to stop the flow of drugs. His comments came after the release of their 2012 annual drug survey. The survey found that around one third of South African adults support the legalisation of some drugs, like marijuana. He said that considering the size of … Continue reading

By Dahl Erickson on Mar 26, 2013 in Featured, Sports, Video Just like a quick start helped them to a victory over the weekend against Kelly Walsh, the Green River Wolves scored twice in the games first seven minutes and held a 2-0 lead heading into halftime on their way to a 3-1 non-conference inter-class game on Braves Field in Afton. The best shots Green River had in the match resulted in the two early goals as Victor Allatorre got past Star Valleys Travis Kinslow in the 4th minute to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. The momentum kept going as the Wolf pack ganged up for another run at the Star Valley net just three minutes later, this time punched in the right side by Chase Erickson in the 7th minute. The Braves countered the Wolves and decidedly controlled the action for the remainder of the first half, but were forced to settle for several close calls which were either wide of the net or saved by Alexander Marchal who finished with eight saves for Green River. The second half also got underway with a pair of quick goals. This time, Star Valleys Cole Bagley put the Braves lone … Continue reading
