Posted: Published on March 21st, 2013

Colleyville, TX (PRWEB) March 19, 2013 Tracy Crain, of Tracy Crain Counseling and Therapy, said designer drug use is on the rise worldwide. Citing a January 2013 report issued by the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB), Crain said, Mephodrone, which is similar to cocaine and ecstasy, is now showing up as the current designer drug-of-choice in Europe, Southeast Asia and Australia. Crain says that while the drug is most likely manufactured in China, it is also becoming much more available here in the United States via the internet. The short-term affects are similar to those of cocaine, Crain said. Those include: restlessness, anxiety, heart irregularities, nausea, vomiting and paranoia. Long term affects, she said, include addiction, depression, and possible long-term memory damage. Mephodrone is just one of many designer drugs showing up on the world market. Per the ICBN report, Japan has recently added 51 drugs to its controlled substance list, and Europe has added 15. The ICBN is a world-wide narcotic drug watchdog that advises the United Nations. Regardless of the substance abused, Crain says the approach to change this condition includes treating the afflicted as well as the codependentthat person or persons in the addicts life who picks … Continue reading

High potency cholesterol drugs linked to kidney injury

Posted: Published on March 21st, 2013

TORONTO -- The use of high potency versions of cholesterol lowering drugs called statins may increase a person's risk of developing kidney failure, a new study suggests. The research found that when compared to low dose statin regimens, high potency versions of the pills were linked to slightly elevated rates of acute kidney injury. The researchers, who are from institutions across Canada, estimate that for every 1,700 people who used high dose statins for 120 days, you would expect to see one more person hospitalized with kidney failure. While that number may seem small, a drug safety expert who wasn't involved in the work noted that use of these drugs is common. "Tens of millions of North Americans take these drugs, and so even side-effects that are relatively uncommon are important," said Dr. David Juurlink, a specialist in internal medicine and clinical pharmacology at Toronto's Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. "The findings strongly suggest that high-dose statins can cause acute kidney injury.... Most clinicians don't generally perceive statins to be a potential cause of kidney injury. Hopefully this study will change that perception, and make us all a bit more careful of how we use these drugs." The research was produced … Continue reading

Sexual Enhancement Supplements Contain Hidden Drugs , FDA Warns

Posted: Published on March 21st, 2013

The Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers today (March 21) that several supplements advertised as sexual enhancements contain hidden drugs. A supplement called "Stiff Days" contains sildenafil, the active ingredient in prescription drug Viagra, which is used to treat erectile dysfunction;"Rock-It Man" contains a similar compound called hydroxythiohomosildenafil; and "Libido Sexual Enhancer" contains both of those ingredients as well as tadalafil, which is the active ingredient in the prescription drug Cialis, according to the FDA. "These undeclared ingredients may interact with nitrates found in some prescription drugs, such as nitroglycerin, and may lower blood pressure to dangerous levels.Men with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or heart disease often take nitrates," the agency said on its website. The products are sold online and in some retail stores. There is a growing trend indietary supplements, often promoted for sexual enhancement, weight loss, and body building, to contain with hidden drugs and chemicals, although they are often represented as being "all natural," the agency said. FDA warns of another compounding pharmacy recall

Posted: Published on March 21st, 2013

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Food and Drug Administration is warning doctors that a compounding pharmacy is recalling dozens of lots of the Roche drug Avastin after receiving reports of eye infections among patients. The FDA said Wednesday that Clinical Specialties of Martinez, Ga., has received five reports of eye infections from physicians who used the drug to treat macular degeneration, a common vision disorder in seniors. The compounding pharmacy is recalling 40 lots of Avastin distributed to doctors' offices in Georgia, Louisiana, South Carolina and Indiana since Dec. 18, the FDA said in an online posting. Avastin is approved as a cancer drug, but it is structurally similar to Lucentis, another Roche drug approved for macular degeneration. For years, compounding pharmacies have repackaged Avastin into small vials for use by eye doctors who prescribe it off-label, or without FDA approval. Repackaged injections of Avastin cost about $50, compared with $1,950 for Lucentis. A call placed to Clinical Specialties' lead pharmacist, Austin Gore, was not immediately returned Wednesday. Swiss drugmaker Roche has tried to discourage doctors from using Avastin for such unapproved uses. The company points out that Lucentis was specifically tested and formulated for use in the eye, and its … Continue reading

Visible mold forces recall of N.J. pharmacy injection drugs

Posted: Published on March 21st, 2013

By JoNel Aleccia, Senior Writer, NBC News A New Jersey compounding pharmacy has temporarily shuttered operations after Connecticut hospital officials reported finding visible mold in bags of a vital injection drug. Med Prep Consulting Inc., of Tinton Falls, agreed to stop making and shipping medications after recalling all lots of all products -- including the magnesium sulfate intravenous solution that sparked concerns starting last week, Food and Drug Administration officials said Monday. The move followed a voluntary consent order enacted Friday that will remain in effect until at least March 22, officials with the New Jersey State Board of Pharmacy said. The recall potentially affects thousands of bags, syringes and vials of premixed solution. This investigation is evolving. At this time, in an abundance of caution, the Department of Health recommends that any health care facility that has received products from Med Prep should inventory them and remove them from use, New Jersey Health Commissioner Mary E. O'Dowd said in a statement. At least thirteen hospitals in Connecticut, Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania apparently received the firms 50-milliliter bags of magnesium sulfate 2 grams in dextrose 5 percent in water, a solution commonly used to replace vital electrolytes in hospitalized … Continue reading
