HIV-Infected Infant Cured With Early Use of Virus-Blocking Drugs

Posted: Published on March 4th, 2013

Geostock/Getty Images HIV treatments can hold the disease at bay, though stopping the drugs can be a death sentence since it allows infected cells secreted within the immune system to re-emerge, spreading the virus anew. Administering the mix of drugs right after birth may have stopped the virus from forming hidden reservoirs. Doctors say they have cured an infant born with HIV for the first time by giving her a cocktail of drugs shortly after birth, a result that could point the way toward saving the lives of thousands more infected children. The baby, whose identity has been kept anonymous, began a regimen of AIDS drugs about 30 hours after she was born at a rural Mississippi hospital, doctors said yesterday at a medical meeting in Atlanta. At 18 months, the mother took the child off the medication. With no signs of the virus for 10 months, the infant was deemed functionally cured, researchers said. While HIV treatments can hold the disease at bay, stopping them can be a death sentence, allowing infected cells secreted within the immune system to re-emerge. Administering the mix of drugs right after birth may have stopped the virus from forming hidden reservoirs. If confirmed … Continue reading

Drugs and weapons 'storeman' jailed

Posted: Published on March 4th, 2013

4 March 2013 Last updated at 09:36 ET A man who was caught with firearms and drugs at his home in North Lanarkshire has been jailed for seven years. Police raided 50-year-old John Lucas' isolated home at Roughrigg, Airdrie, on April 27 last year. They found cocaine worth 164,000, cannabis worth 12,000, amphetamine worth 11,000 and 38,000 in cash. They also found gun barrels and ammunition. Wheelchair user Lucas was jailed at the High Court in Edinburgh after earlier pleading guilty to the charges. Defence counsel Tony Graham told the court that Lucas, who suffers from a degenerative condition, had been acting as "a quartermaster" for the items found during the search. Mr Graham said items were being stored at the house on behalf of others after Lucas had built up debts. In addition to the drugs, police seized four gun barrels along with striker units, although none had been assembled into weapons at the time. Each was capable of being combined to form a simple single shot firearm about eight inches long. Live rounds of ammunition and spent cartridge cases were also found. Drugs seen to cost more

Posted: Published on March 4th, 2013

Mumbai, March 3 (PTI): Drugs are expected to cost more following an increase in excise duty to 6 per cent from 5 per cent on formulations and to 12 per cent from 10 per cent on bulk drugs in the budget, ratings agency Crisil has said. "These increases are not expected to significantly impact pharmaceutical players as they will pass on the duty increases to consumers," Crisil said in its budget analysis. The concessional 5 per cent basic customs duty has been extended to six life-saving drugs/vaccines and to bulk drugs used to manufacture these drugs. However, the impact of this on the industry will be neutral since these drugs account for a small proportion in the domestic market. The five-year extension of the 200 per cent weighted deduction for in-house RandD expenditure will marginally benefit firms as RandD expenditure, on an average, forms less than 5 per cent of their net sales, Crisil said. According to the ratings firm, the phama industry is on a strong footing and the healthy growth will continue. In 2013-14, Crisil Research expects the industry to continue to expand at a healthy rate of 13-14 per cent year-on-year, reaching $36-37 billion. The industry is … Continue reading

Gilead Drugs to Prevent HIV Spurned by African Women in Study

Posted: Published on March 4th, 2013

Drugs made by Gilead Sciences Inc. (GILD) that can prevent healthy adults from getting HIV didnt reduce infections in African women because of lack of adherence to treatment, raising questions about the medicines usefulness in stopping the spread of AIDS. About two thirds of women didnt consistently use Gileads daily pill Truvada or Viread, which came in the form of a pill or vaginal gel, according to the study released today at the Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections in Atlanta. The women in the study said they were deterred from using the medicines because of stigma associated with AIDS drugs and side effects, which can include diarrhea and nightmares. Women were not using the product and those women least likely to use the product are the ones most at risk for HIV infection, they are young women and those who are not married, said Jeanne Marrazzo, a researcher at University of Washington in Seattle who led the study. The finding may cause global health officials to rethink their strategies for using the treatments as a form of prevention. U.S. regulators approved Gileads Truvada last year as the first drug to prevent HIV infection in healthy adults. Health organizations worldwide … Continue reading
