Double success for RBH stroke team

Posted: Published on February 8th, 2013

The Royal Berkshire Hospital stroke team celebrated twice this week they were made a Centre of Excellence for their stroke treatment and received a donation of thousands from Sonning Golf Club. The news comes a year after the hospital became a 24/7 regional centre for stroke treatment and is providing the second fastest care in the country. The best chance of recovery from a stroke is dependant on getting vital thrombolytic treatment as fast as possible. The combined hard work of the Stroke Team, members of the Emergency Department and the radiographers operating CT scanners has earned the hospital its honour of Centre of Excellence. Stroke development sister Liz Barber said: We are all really very proud this is a close team and everyone involved works hard. Consultant Dr Andrew van Wyk stressed the importance of teamwork, including the ambulance service paramedics and often the family of the person suffering a stroke. He said: In a very short space of time we have to gather as much information as possible at a time when often the patient cannot speak. We need to rule out any other reasons for their condition so it can be key for us to speak with … Continue reading

By Katie Euphrat Above: Recovering from a spinal cord injury can be extremely difficult. Physical therapy and other interventions can help. But despite those efforts, some people are left with paralyzed or spastic limbs. A unique type of surgery offers hope to these patients. KPBS Health Reporter Kenny Goldberg says the procedure can produce some miraculous results. Some of the scenes included in this video are graphic. SAN DIEGO Recovering from a spinal cord injury can be extremely difficult. Physical therapy and other interventions can help. But despite those efforts, some people are left with paralyzed or spastic limbs. In July 2008, Rick Constantine was involved in a head-on car crash in Las Vegas. The accident left him paralyzed on his right side. Despite surgery to ease the pressure on his spine, and numerous physical therapy sessions, his condition just didnt improve much. Doctors told Constantine hed never walk again. But they were wrong. Constantine not only can get up out of his wheelchair under his own power, he can also walk without a cane. In August 2005, Steve Isetts was riding his mountain bike in Escondidos Daley Ranch. He swerved to dodge something on the trail, and wiped out. … Continue reading

Treatment with clot-busting drug yields better results after stroke than supportive therapy alone

Posted: Published on February 8th, 2013

Public release date: 7-Feb-2013 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Stephanie Desmon sdesmon@jhmi.edu 410-955-8665 Johns Hopkins Medicine In an update to previous research, Johns Hopkins neurologists say minimally invasive delivery of the drug tPA directly into potentially lethal blood clots in the brain helped more patients function independently a year after suffering an intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), a deadly and debilitating form of stroke. Rates of functional recovery with the active tPA treatment far surpassed those achieved with standard "supportive" therapy that essentially gives clots a chance to shrink on their own. In the current Johns Hopkins-led study, ICH patients who randomly received the minimally invasive surgery to deliver a drug designed to dissolve their golf ball-sized clots went home from the hospital an average of 38 days sooner than those receiving supportive therapy. In addition to the health benefits, the tPA therapy, and resulting shortened hospital stay, led to a savings of an estimated $44,000 per patient, the researchers say. ICH has long been considered surgically untreatable under most circumstances; roughly 50 percent of people who have such a stroke die from it. "This is the most promising treatment that has come along in the last 30 or 40 … Continue reading

Veterans with mild TBI have brain abnormalities

Posted: Published on February 8th, 2013

Feb. 7, 2013 Mild traumatic brain injury (TBI), including concussion, is one of the most common types of neurological disorder, affecting approximately 1.3 million Americans annually. It has received more attention recently because of its frequency and impact among two groups of patients: professional athletes, especially football players; and soldiers returning from mid-east conflicts with blast-related TBI. An estimated 10 to 20 percent of the more than 2 million U.S. soldiers deployed in Iraq or Afghanistan have experienced TBI. A recent study by psychiatrists from the Iowa City VA Medical Center and University of Iowa Health Care finds that soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan with mild TBI have measurable abnormalities in the white matter of their brains when compared to returning veterans who have not experienced TBI. These abnormalities appear to be related to the severity of the injury and are related to cognitive deficits. The findings were published online in December in the American Journal of Psychiatry. "In the military population we studied, patients with TBI have more alterations, sometimes called 'potholes,' in the white matter of their brains than patients without a history of TBI," says senior study author Ricardo Jorge, M.D., UI professor of psychiatry. "The … Continue reading

Groundbreaking new treatment dissolves 'golf ball-sized' clots Patients who use drugs had less disability a year later, study says Clots removed in 50 per cent of patients given medication, compared to just 5 per cent receiving standard care By Jenny Hope PUBLISHED: 20:26 EST, 7 February 2013 | UPDATED: 02:58 EST, 8 February 2013 Groundbreaking: New treatment which sees drugs inserted in the brain of stroke victims could help thousands who suffer a brain haemorrhage (file picture Surgeons are inserting drugs in the brain of stroke victims to dissolve golf ball-sized clots in a groundbreaking new treatment. The technique could help thousands of patients who suffer a bleeding stroke, or brain haemorrhage, for which there is currently no surgical treatment. A study shows that clots were removed in 50 per cent of patients given medication directly into the brain, compared with just 5 per cent of patients receiving standard care. Patients having surgery using clot-buster drugs had significantly less disability a year later, according to research presented at the American Stroke Associations annual conference. Bleeding strokes in the brain affect one in seven stroke victims in the UK about 20,000 a year and occur when a weakened blood vessel in … Continue reading

Skin 'may restore' diseased MS brain

Posted: Published on February 8th, 2013

8 February 2013 Last updated at 03:55 ET By James Gallagher Health and science reporter, BBC News It may be possible to use a patient's own skin to repair the damage caused by multiple sclerosis (MS), which is currently incurable, say researchers. Nerves struggle to communicate in MS as their insulating covering is attacked by the immune system - causing fatigue and damaging movement. Animal tests, described in the journal Cell Stem Cell, have now used modified skin cells to repair the insulation. Experts said there was an "urgent need" for such therapies. Just like electrical wires, nerves have insulation - but instead of plastic, the body uses a protein called myelin. However, diseases that result in damage to the myelin, including MS, leave the nerves exposed and electrical signals struggle to travel round the body. A team of scientists at the University of Rochester Medical Center, in the US, used advances in stem-cell research to attempt to repair the myelin. They took a sample of human skin cells and converted it into stem cells, which are capable of becoming any other type of cell in the body. The next step was to transform the stem cells into immature versions … Continue reading

Disabled prisoner can return home

Posted: Published on February 8th, 2013

8 February 2013 Last updated at 12:27 ET A severely disabled prisoner who requires round-the-clock treatment does not have to go back to jail, the Court of Appeal has ruled. Daniel Roque Hall, 30, was given a three-year sentence in July after admitting trying to smuggle cocaine worth more than 300,000 in his wheelchair from Peru through Heathrow. He was sent to Wormwood Scrubs, but suffered heart failure within weeks. Hall, from north-west London, has spent most of his sentence in hospital. He has Friedreich's ataxia, which causes loss of physical co-ordination, and is not expected to live into his 40s. Allowing his appeal against sentence, Lord Justice Hughes, Mr Justice Wyn Williams and Mr Justice Hickinbottom substituted his sentence for the lesser term of 18 months, which means he can return home this week. He was taken to University College Hospital last August and has been kept in hospital under prison guard since then. He has impaired speech, diabetes and a weakened heart, and was being cared for round-the-clock before he was sent to prison. Lord Justice Hughes said there was no lack of punishment in what Hall had undergone since being sentenced, and his case was "an appropriate … Continue reading

Disabled Prisoner Freed From 'Death Penalty By Default'

A severely disabled prisoner who requires round-the-clock treatment does not have to go back to jail, the Court of Appeal has ruled. Daniel Roque Hall, 30, is serving a three-year sentence after admitting smuggling 2.8kg of cocaine in his wheelchair back from a holiday in Peru. He suffers from the rare degenerative condition Friedreich's ataxia and is not expected to live into his 40s. He has spent most of his sentence in hospital. Allowing his appeal against sentence, Lord Justice Hughes, Mr Justice Wyn Williams and Mr Justice Hickinbottom substituted the lesser term of 18 months, which means he can return to his north-west London home this week. Campaigners had argued that Hall's sentence was "the death penalty by default". Hall's mother Anne, who joined supporters who clapped as the appeal judges announced their decision, said she was "absolutely delighted" with the court's decision to release her son. She said: "The court has made a right and just decision for which I am grateful. "It is important for people with disabilities that their needs are properly understood and prisons can cater for them in the way they would be treated in the community. Mrs Hall said it was a pity … Continue reading

How My Sex Life has Changed on Testosterone Replacement Therapy Please SHARE THIS VIDEO if you found it useful or if you know somebody who is suffering and/or feeling alone. Thank you. MY STORY My name is Noah and on May 18 2011, I had a rare reaction to a vaccine called VIVITROL and consequently spiraled into a major, agitated, suicidal depression with depersonalization. I lost 25 lbs in 4 weeks and was in full panic or near panic for 8 weeks straight mixed with the darkest most painful depression I cold have ever imagined. I immediately could not work and had to move in with my parents who along with many siblings and friends had to watch me 24/7 as I was so suicidal. I was eventually hospitalized. Getting through each day seemed truly unbearable and I knew I would surely die. I have been put on many many different SSRI's SNRI's Tricyclics, Mood stabilizers, anti psychotics, holistic meds, acupuncture and even a form of shock therapy called RTMS. I barely saw any improvement in my condition for a full year. It was decided I had treatment resistant depression and I spent nearly every moment in tears. … Continue reading
