CellTex Says It's Moving Its Stem Cell Business to Mexico

Posted: Published on February 2nd, 2013

CellTex Therapeutics, the Houston company that opened one of the first commercial stem-cell labs in the country in 2011, then closed it after a warning from regulators last fall, issued surprising news this week. The company sent its patients a cheery e-mail saying that it is going to be working with doctors in Mexicoinstead of the U.S.to provide its unapproved treatment. We are happy to report we are bringing this technology to Mexico, CellTex wrote in its note. We anticipate that we will be able to offer our stem cell therapy services to physicians in Mexico starting very soon! These winter-time trips to beautiful, sunny locations in Mexico to build these relationships have been an added benefit! The company declined to comment further. CellTex, whose adventures I chronicled early in January, also said it is opening a new research lab in Houston (its original lab had been cited by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for having major manufacturing problems) and hoped to begin clinical trials under FDA supervision. Looks like the showdown with the feds is over for now. CellTex had been charging patients up to $30,000 for its treatments. First, a doctor would remove two teaspoons of fat … Continue reading

A bit of history about stem cells – Video

Posted: Published on February 2nd, 2013

A bit of history about stem cells http://www.stemcellsarthritistreatment.com Early work by Friedenstein and associates provided intriguing information on the potential for bone marrow to differentiate into stem cells. They cultured bone marrow cells and removed cells that didn't appear to adhere to each other. After further culture, they found that the most adherent cells were spindle shaped and resembled deposits of cartilage and bone. Other groups confirmed the findings and they found that these cells were multipotent and could differentiate into bone cells, cartilage cells, fat cells, and muscle cells. The name they gave to these multipotent cells was "mesenchymal stem cells." http By: Nathan Wei … Continue reading

One of the best kept secrets- Why is stem cell plasticity so important for arthritis treatment?.mp4 – Video

One of the best kept secrets- Why is stem cell plasticity so important for arthritis treatment?.mp4 http://www.stemcellsarthritistreatment.com The blood contains cells with many forms and functions. The ultimate source of these cells is called the hematopoetic stem cell or HSC for short. One feature of an HSC is self- renewal, the ability to divide and still remain a stem cell. HSCs can also differentiate into more mature cells and this transformation is driven by cytokines (protein messengers) and growth factors. The best known source for HSCs is bone marrow. Along with HSCs in the marrow are other stem cells, the mesenchymal stem cells or MSCs. Multiple experiments have shown that HSCs are very plastic, meaning they can be coaxed into helping with the regeneration and repair of non-blood tissue. This has led to the idea that "adult" HSCs and MSCs, if placed in the proper environment can serve as a "repair shop" for connective tissues such as cartilage, muscle, and tendon, ligament, and bone. This property of plasticity makes stem cell repair and treatment of arthritis in the shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, ankle, hand, and other regions possible. http By: Nathan Wei … Continue reading

Concern over muscular dystrophy ‘misdiagnosis’

Posted: Published on February 2nd, 2013

Support group set up for muscular dystrophy sufferers 8:54am Friday 1st February 2013 in News By Richard Catton, richard.catton@thepress.co.uk A SUPPORT group for people with muscular dystrophy has been set up by a York woman whose father died at the age of 58 following a long struggle with the disease. Clare Russell, 30, from Clifton Moor, set up the fundraising and support group after seeing her father, Peter, battle the illness for years, and is kicking off 2013 with a huge fundraising campaign which she hopes will raise 10,000 for research into the muscle wasting condition. She said: My father passed away in November 2011. He had the illness for years and my mum was his carer for a long time. After my dad passed away we met up with some ladies from the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign and we had the idea of fundraising. We said we just wanted to do some different things to raise money. Her determination to raise 10,000 will see Clare attempt her first skydive in march and she has also organised a charity ball to take place two weeks later. Last year she joined her mother Jane, 53, brother Chris, and his girlfriend, to complete … Continue reading
