Pharmacy liable for woman’s injury

Posted: Published on February 1st, 2013

Picture: MORGUEFILE THE Vincent Family Pharmacy in East London has been found liable for the injury of a 67-year-old woman who slipped and fell on its freshly washed wet floor. Margaret Louise Ascani is suing the pharmacy, located in the Vincent Park Shopping Mall, for R1.1-million after she slipped on the floor and broke her hip in May 2011. The high court sitting in East London found that a pharmacy had a greater duty of care to its customers because, by the nature of its business, it attracted more vulnerable people than a supermarket. Ascani claims the freshly cleaned floor had been wet and had caused her to slip in one of the aisles in the pharmacy and injure herself. An ambulance had been called and she had been taken to hospital. While the pharmacy admitted the floor had been recently cleaned, it denied it was wet. But Judge Nambitha Dambuza found that the floor had been wet and the pharmacy should have foreseen that the washing of the floor during business hours could result in an injury to customers. It should have taken reasonable and necessary precautionary steps to warn members of the public of the possible danger. She … Continue reading

Pharmacy doubles reward after second robbery

Posted: Published on February 1st, 2013

A local pharmacy has increased its offer of reward money for the arrest and conviction of the armed robber who struck their store in December and again on Sunday. Detectives Terry Monter and Joe Pileggi are investigating the robberies that took place at the Rite Aid, 3720 Tuscarawas St. W, on Dec. 11 and again at 6:15 a.m. Sunday. Monter said a man in photos they have obtained appears to show a semi-automatic pistol when he robs the pharmacy of undisclosed drugs. Detectives believe the gunman was possibly the same man who robbed the place in December. The store offered a $5,000 reward in December and has increased that reward to $10,000, Monter said. The gunman was described as white, about 5 feet, 8 inches tall and 160 pounds. He wore a blue Nike hooded sweatshirt covering a black hoody, darker jeans, dark shoes and a couple layers of clothing as well as a winter cap. Fliers have been distributed in the area around the pharmacy as police are asking anyone with information to call them at 330-489-3144. Ayrshire news: Student lands top chemistry award

Posted: Published on February 1st, 2013

Feb 1 2013 by Stuart Wilson, Ayrshire Post A student who scored 100 per cent in an exam has landed a national award. Rachel Doyle has been honoured by the Royal Society of Chemistry for her stunning performance. The Ayr girl soared to success while sitting her final tests at Wellington school. She left for St Andrews University after bagging A grades at Advanced Higher in Chemistry, Physics and Maths. And she was back in Ayr to receive her award and to speak to pupils at a special assembly. She said: I am still surprised at receiving the award from the Royal Society of Chemistry, something which I never expected would happen to me. It was, however, very exciting and has helped make up for dragging my parents to the local beaches to collect freezing cold seawater. Winning the award has also helped confirm that following a career path in chemistry is something I genuinely want to do. Speaking to other students at university who sat A-levels or went to school in America, they dont get this hands-on experience so it is something not to take for granted whilst at school. When implanted under the skin in suitable animal models, the cells further differentiate into insulin producing and other endocrine cells that regulate blood glucose in a manner similar or identical to a normal pancreas. If VC-01 performs in humans as it has in animal studies, it could effectively cure type 1 diabetics and be an important new therapy for insulin dependent type 2 diabetics.
