Let's Play Um Jammer Lammy! Stage 7: MilkCan, That's Us! – Video

Posted: Published on January 26th, 2013

Let's Play Um Jammer Lammy! Stage 7: MilkCan, That's Us! Um Jammer Lammy Stage 7: Got to Move! MilkCan, an all-girl rock band. They've been preparing for weeks for their first live gig, and today's the day! The band is comprised of: Lammy, our heroine, and MilkCan's lead guitarist. Where Lammy goes, mosh pits follow. Normally, she is shy and somewhat nervous when she is in front of people. But when she has her guitar, she turns into a totally different person. She has a lot of confidence and surprises everyone with her bold and daring riffs. I don't mean to fawn over her, but she plays well for a southpaw. Katy Kat, lead vocalist and bass player for MilkCan, is the hip feline band leader. Very spirited and active, and very fashionable (as anyone who has perfected PaRapper the Rapper will tell you); she is a natural leader. Katy is a bit breezy, but she actually tries hard and puts a lot of effort into the things she does. Ma-San, the drummer and final member of MilkCan. She is a bookworm and her favorite reading genres are mysticism and economics. Ma-San has a … Continue reading

Claflin partners with S.C. College of Pharmacy on degree program

Posted: Published on January 26th, 2013

Claflin University officials signed a memorandum of understanding Jan. 10 with the South Carolina College of Pharmacy to establish a three+one degree articulation program that would eventually end with graduating students receiving a Doctor of Pharmacy degree. This is consistent with our mission to build partnerships and provide Claflin students with opportunities, President Dr. Henry N. Tisdale said. It is important when students arrive at Claflin they understand there is a clear path to success. This partnership with the S.C. College of Pharmacy helps to accomplish that endeavor. Under the agreement, Claflin students would attend the University for three years pursuing a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry and then transfer to the S.C. College of Pharmacy with the goal of obtaining a Doctor of Pharmacy degree provided they meet admissions requirements. S.C. College of Pharmacy Executive Dean Dr. Joseph DiPiro noted several Claflin students have either graduated or currently matriculate from his institution. We want more Claflin students in our program, DiPiro said. During the signing of the agreement, DiPiro was joined by Alfred Moore, the University of South Carolina School of Pharmacys director of student services. Department of Chemistry Chair Dr. Angela Peters said the arrangement was truly exciting … Continue reading

Mass. judge freezes pharmacy owners' assets

Posted: Published on January 26th, 2013

BOSTON (AP) -- A bankruptcy court judge on Friday froze the assets of the four owners of a pharmacy blamed for a fatal meningitis outbreak, clearing the way for creditors to determine what's left of the millions the owners received from the firm. The order Friday by Judge Henry Boroff at a hearing in Springfield forbids the owners of the New England Compounding Center from spending or moving any of their assets, except to pay living expenses or legal bills. The written order from Boroff was expected to be released Monday. The order, which came in response to a motion by a creditors committee, applies to owners Barry Cadden, his wife Lisa Cadden, her brother Greg Conigliaro and her sister-in-law Carla Conigliaro. Anne Andrews, an attorney for one of the creditors on the Official Committee of Unsecured Creditors, called the decision a "big victory." Andrews said creditors can now find out how much the owners still have of the tens of millions they were paid, and the court can determine much they owe back to the creditors, who include victims of the outbreak. A hearing on that issue was scheduled for Feb. 28. A request for comment was made Friday … Continue reading

Researchers at Scripps to Study Possible New Treatment for Parkinson's Disease

Posted: Published on January 26th, 2013

SAN DIEGO, Jan. 25, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Scripps Clinic, in partnership with The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI), has begun the research phase of a proposed clinical trial using induced pluripotent stem cells to halt or reverse the effects of Parkinson's disease. (Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20121018/LA95241LOGO) Under the leadership of Melissa Houser, MD, neurologist and medical director of Scripps Clinic's Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders Center, and co-investigator Jeanne F. Loring, PhD, professor and director of the Center for Regenerative Medicine at TSRI, skin cells taken from Parkinson's disease patients who meet select criteria are being cultivated in vitro and turned into pluripotent stem cells. These stem cells will be developed into dopamine-producing brain cells. The plans, which will require Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval, are to implant these cells back into the donor patients' brains; the goal is for the cells to integrate inside the brain and produce enough dopamine to alleviate the worst symptoms of Parkinson's disease. There are currently several clinical trials using pluripotent stem cells to replace cells lost to injury or neurodegenerative disease, as well as for the development of pharmaceuticals, but reimplantation of cells into the same patient for function restoration as a treatment for Parkinson's … Continue reading

Rush researchers studying stem cell therapy to repair damaged knee cartilage

Posted: Published on January 26th, 2013

Public release date: 24-Jan-2013 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Deb Song deb_song@rush.edu 312-942-0588 Rush University Medical Center (CHICAGO) Rush University Medical Center is conducting the nation's first clinical study of an innovative stem cell drug, Cartistem, to repair knee cartilage damaged by aging, trauma or degenerative diseases such as osteoarthritis. Cartistem is manufactured from mesenchymal stem cells derived from allogeneic (donor) umbilical cord blood. Umbilical cord blood is a readily accessible source of high-quality stem cells, is associated with minimal health risks and carries relatively few ethical concerns. The stem cells are mixed with hyaluronan, a natural polymer that plays a major role in wound healing and is a building block of joint cartilage. Cartistem is surgically administered into the area of cartilage damage following an arthroscopic surgery as an adjunct to microfracture, a commonly used technique used to repair cartilage damage. The principal investigator on the study is Dr. Brian Cole, a professor in the department of orthopedics and anatomy and cell biology at Rush University Medical Center. Dr. Cole is the head of Rush's Cartilage Restoration Center and is also the head team physician for the Chicago Bulls. Cole and his co-researchers will assess the drug's … Continue reading
