It Takes More Than Protein-Coding DNA To Make A Heart

Featured Article Academic Journal Main Category: Genetics Also Included In: Biology / Biochemistry;Cardiovascular / Cardiology;Stem Cell Research Article Date: 24 Jan 2013 - 13:00 PST Current ratings for: It Takes More Than Protein-Coding DNA To Make A Heart In a study reported online in the journal Cell on 24 January, biologists from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) describe how they identified a critical role for a lncRNA they dubbed "Braveheart". But while thousands of these genetic snippets have been found, very little is known about their specific roles. The MIT team suggests the snippet they have identified, Braveheart, controls the transformation of stem cells into heart cells when embryonic stem cells are differentiating. If that turns out to be the case, then studying lncRNAs could lead to a new way of developing regenerative drugs to treat hearts damaged through aging or cardiovascular disease. Co-lead author Carla Klattenhoff, a postdoc in MIT's Department of Biology, says in a statement: "It opens a new door to what we could do, and how we could use lncRNAs to induce specific cell types, that's been completely unexplored." In their study they show how mouse embryonic stem cells that don't have enough Braveheart lncRNA fail … Continue reading

New Stem Cell Fund At BGU

Posted: Published on January 25th, 2013

Ben-Gurion University of the Negev established a stem cell research fund last month, a fund that will support scholarly collaboration between selected medical and pharmacological researchers, stem biologists and tissue engineers. The source of the funding is Rhoda Baruch, in memory of her late husband, Dr. Jordan Baruch. The Baruchs are from Chevy Chase, Md., and are the founders of the Washington-Baltimore Region of American Associates of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (AABGU). The stem cell center is a new endeavor [for BGU], said Keren Waranch, director of the regional branch. This is one of the top priorities for President Rivka Carmi and for the school. This endowment fund is a big step in the fulfilling their plans. Dr. Baruch, said Waranch, was a longtime supporter of Ben-Gurion University and himself an inventor, an incredible innovator and a forward thinker. He was considered one of the foremost authorities in the field of acoustics and had several patents for sound-dampening technology and loudspeaker systems. In the late 1970s, he served as assistant secretary of commerce for science and technology under President Jimmy Carter. In that role, he helped create the Binational Research and Development Foundation (BIRD), administered locally by the Maryland/Israel … Continue reading

New Genetic Twist: 4-Stranded DNA Lurks in Human Cells

Posted: Published on January 25th, 2013

Sixty years after scientists described the chemical code of life an interweaving double helix called DNA researchers have found four-stranded DNA is also lurking in human cells. The odd structures are called G-quadruplexes because they form in regions of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) that are full of guanine, one of the DNA molecule's four building blocks, with the others being adenine, cytosine, thymine. The structure comprises four guanines held together by a type of hydrogen bonding to form a sort of squarelike shape. (The DNA molecule is itself a double strand held together by these building blocks and wrapped together like a helix.) The new visualization of the G-quadruplex is detailed this week in the journal Nature Chemistry. "I think this paper is important in showing directly the existence of this structure in vivo in the human genome, but it is not completely unexpected," said Hans-Joachim Lipps, of the University of Witten in Germany, who was not involved in the study. [See Images of the 4-Stranded DNA] Scientists had shown in the past that such quadruplex DNA could form in test tubes and had even been found in the cells of ciliated protozoa, or single-celled organisms with hairlike appendages. Also there … Continue reading

Genetic landscape of common brain tumors holds key to personalized treatment

Posted: Published on January 25th, 2013

Public release date: 24-Jan-2013 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Bill Hathaway 203-432-1322 Yale University Nearly the entire genetic landscape of the most common form of brain tumor can be explained by abnormalities in just five genes, an international team of researchers led by Yale School of Medicine scientists report online in the Jan. 24 edition of the journal Science. Knowledge of the genomic profile of the tumors and their location in the brain make it possible for the first time to develop personalized medical therapies for meningiomas, which currently are only managed surgically. Meningioma tumors affect about 170,000 patients in the United States. They are usually benign but can turn malignant in about 10 percent of cases. Even non-cancerous tumors can require surgery if they affect the surrounding brain tissue and disrupt neurological functions. Approximately half of the tumors have already been linked to a mutation or deletion of a gene called neurofibromin 2, or NF2. The origins of the rest of the meningiomas had remained a mystery. The Yale team conducted genomic analyses of 300 meningiomas and found four new genetic suspects, each of which yields clues to the origins and treatment of the condition. Tumors mutated … Continue reading

Precision Stem Cell – Cayden’s Story – Video

Posted: Published on January 25th, 2013

Precision Stem Cell - Cayden's Story http://www.precisionstemcell.com Precision StemCell is located within the United States on the beautiful Gulf Coast in Alabama. We use minimally invasive advanced stem cell harvesting and processing. Large numbers of stem cells can be harvested from the patient's fat. Our system is entirely closed, meaning the fat is harvested and stem cells are separated from the fat without ever exposing the cells to the outside environment. Stem cells are then placed into the area of damaged tissue using the most advanced imaging technology. Precision StemCell procedures offer a viable alternative to many who are facing surgery due to an injury or are suffering from chronic pain. Our patients experience little to no down time from our procedures and avoid the painful and lengthy rehab period that usually follows surgery to restore joint strength and mobility. We understand what it means to seek a good physical quality of life and our doctor, Jason R. Williams, is focused on making positive differences in the lives of his patients through innovative stem cell treatments. By: PrecisionStemCell … Continue reading

A heart transplant is not a cure. There are better options. – Video

Posted: Published on January 25th, 2013

A heart transplant is not a cure. There are better options. Public information campaigns on (heart) transplant are biaised. Mechanical circulatory support is a better option (even for elderly patients) than a heart transplant. Yet the info the broad public gets is all about heart transplant; nothing about mechanical circulatory support. How comes? Those campaigns are financed for up to 60% by "Big Pharma" (immunosuppressive drugs). When you get a transplant, you need the drug. When you get treated with mechanical circulatory support (a device) instead, you don't. Big Pharma has no interest in patient education on mechanical circulatory support... Heart surgeons should start thinking again: it's time they get involved in "patient education"...Somebody has to do the job "Big Pharma" is obviously not doing. Unless you call this "taking advantage" practice of theirs "patient education"... Medical liability includes the loss of chance doctrine. This legal rule applies to surgeons (not to Big Pharma)... Mechanical circulatory support remains underused ; heart transplant is overrated (a transplant is not a cure). Heart transplant has always been the gondola head in organ donation public campaigns - quite a paradox, since wordlwide's most sought after transplant organ is (are)... kidneys. … Continue reading
