Why Pharmaceutical Companies Don't Make Any Money Off Of Flu Shots

Posted: Published on January 25th, 2013

Its been a bad flu season with hospitals in many cities overwhelmed with patients. This is largely a preventable problem. The annual flu vaccine is not perfect but a wider use of the vaccine would provide someamelioration. So why dont more people get a flu shot? Some reporter at the LA Times seemed to think that cost might be a factor (Why does a flu shot cost so much?, Jan 21). After all, getting the shot at your local pharmacy will set you back $30 or so. However, as the reporter found out, given the supply chain challenges of producing and distributing influenza vaccines, the real question is why flu shots cost so little. "Thats because the process of manufacturing the flu shot and distributing it is a huge headache for pharmaceutical companies. The influenza vaccine must be made anew each year, beginning in February. Researchers determine what strains to put in the vaccine after looking closely at what types of flu are most prevalent in the Southern Hemisphere throughout its winter, which is our summer. Vaccines for other illnesses, such as measles, mumps and rubella, can be used until their expiration date, which is often years after theyre made. … Continue reading

UK drug advisers reject khat ban

Posted: Published on January 25th, 2013

23 January 2013 Last updated at 13:32 ET The UK government's official drugs advisory body has rejected calls to ban the herbal stimulant, khat. The Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) said there was "insufficient evidence" that khat caused health problems. The stimulant is traditionally used by members of the Somali, Yemeni and Ethiopian communities. It has been outlawed by the US and Canada and in most European countries, most recently by the Netherlands. The review was commissioned by the Home Office. The ACMD said there was "no evidence" khat, which contain the stimulant cathinone, was directly linked with serious or organised crime. It said khat, which consists of the leaves and shoots of a shrub cultivated in the Horn of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, was chewed to obtain a "mild stimulant effect much less potent than stimulant drugs, such as amphetamine". Khat is sold in bundles for about 3 to 6 each. Users often chew one or two bundles for up to six hours at a time. Somali groups in the UK had told the council that use of khat, which acts as a stimulant when chewed, was a "significant social problem". View original post here: … Continue reading

Welfare drug tests may break privacy law

Posted: Published on January 25th, 2013

Forcing beneficiaries to take drug tests under tough new welfare rules is potentially illegal, the Privacy Commissioner says. In a submission to the Government's latest round of welfare reforms, commissioner Marie Shroff says making beneficiaries take pre-employment drug tests could violate their privacy. It could also leave beneficiaries in a "catch-22" situation, caught between an unlawful drug test and the threat of losing their benefit, she said. The Government's latest welfare reforms - contained in the Social Security (Benefit Categories and Work Focus) Amendment Bill - will create three new benefit categories with a greater focus on finding work. The bill passed its first reading in September but has faced opposition at the select committee hearings, with some claiming it breaches human rights obligations. As part of the reforms, all beneficiaries will be required from July this year to take pre-employment drug tests when requested by a prospective employer. Those who refuse to take the test, or repeatedly fail, will have their benefits cut or suspended. At present, any beneficiary can decline to apply for a job requiring a drug test without facing penalties. Shroff said in her submission that pre-employment drug testing was required by law only for safety-sensitive … Continue reading

Employers Becoming Savvier About Biologics and Specialty Drugs

Posted: Published on January 25th, 2013

CHICAGO, Jan. 24, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --Forty-nine percent of employers said they have an above average understanding of specialty pharmacy according to the latest survey from the non-profit Midwest Business Group on Health (MBGH), one of the nation's leading business groups of employers. This is a significant increase over a similar 2011 survey where 78 percent claimed to have a low to moderate understanding of this challenging benefit. "With costs estimated to make up 40 percent of an employer's total pharmacy spend by 2020, it's essential that they focus their attention on managing this benefit doing nothing is no longer an option," said Cheryl Larson, MBGH vice president. "Since employers primarily fund health care benefits for employees, their understanding of specialty drugs and related costs will be a key factor in resolving current challenges." Key findings The employer-driven survey was conducted by MBGH, with guidance from Randy Vogenberg, PhD, principal at the Institute for Integrated Healthcare. The objectives were to identify and assess the level of knowledge and benefit design gaps of employers in the area of specialty pharmacy drugs and biologic products used to treat conditions such as multiple sclerosis and arthritis. These drugs present significant cost challenges to employers, … Continue reading

Soros wants end to war on drugs

Posted: Published on January 25th, 2013

23 January 2013 Last updated at 15:12 ET George Soros, the billionaire investor, has called for an end to the West's "war on drugs". Mr Soros has thrown his weight behind a push by Guatemalan President Perez Molina, who recently declared that prohibition should be abandoned. Speaking at the World Economic Forum, Mr Soros said that the narcotics trade threatened stability in many countries. He also said austerity "demanded" a new approach to drugs policy, as incarceration was very expensive. While he admitted that he did not have a specific solution to the problem, Mr Soros said he was "very, very optimistic" of seeing a new approach to the "festering problem of drugs". "What got me involved is that the war on drugs was doing more damage than the drugs themselves," he told a press conference alongside President Molina. "I have a strong conviction that the current approach is doing more harm than good, and it has endangered more political stability in a lot of countries. That we need to change." President Molina said he would organise a meeting of Latin American leaders next June to discuss the issue, which will involve several groups including Mr Soros' foundation. The "war … Continue reading
