API expects earnings to lift in 2013

Posted: Published on January 22nd, 2013

Pharmacy retailer API, which owns the Priceline and Soul Pattinson chains, expects its underlying earnings to lift this financial year despite challenging trading conditions. API chairman Peter Robinson told the company's annual general meeting that while retail conditions were tough over Christmas, API managed to post sales growth of 2.8 per cent on the previous year. However, like-for-like sales were marginally lower. 'It is clear that consumers were clearly affected by the current uncertain economic conditions including the prospect of higher unemployment, an increase in the cost of living driven by higher utility costs, the desire to reduce debt and the confidence of lower interest rates yet to be sustained,' he told Tuesday's meeting. Despite the tough trading conditions, API's chief executive Stephen Roche expressed confidence about a lift in full year earnings. He told shareholders API planned to become the dominant mass market health and beauty retailer in Australia and extend its leadership in pharmacy distribution in 2013. API's strategic plan included the continued growth of the number its Priceline stores, increasing the flexibility and range offered to its Soul Pattinson and Pharmacist Advice customers and managing the impacts of PBS reform. 'Absent of any major external environmental or … Continue reading

Pharmacy group’s losses fall by 75%

Posted: Published on January 22nd, 2013

By Gordon Deegan Monday, January 21, 2013 Pre-tax losses at the company that operates the McCabe pharmacy group narrowed by 75% last year to 3.4m. Newly filed accounts for Behey Ltd also show a 2% decline in revenue from 55.36m to 54.2m for the 12 months to the end of Jan 2012. The family-owned business operates 21 pharmacies across the country, with 16 located in Dublin, and also runs the Radisson Blu Farnham Estate Hotel in Co Cavan. Numbers employed at the group last year increased by 26 to 430 and the filings show that the groups operating profits declined by 11% to 5.4m. However, bank loan interest payments, totalling 5.4m, and non-cash depreciation costs of 2.3m, alongside asset impairments of 1m, contributed to the group recording its pre-tax loss. The 13.8m loss recorded in the previous year chiefly arose from an 11.6m writedown in assets. According to the directors report, "net margins in the pharmacy business are all down relative to the results in previous years". It added: "These reductions are directly attributable to the significant reduction in reimbursement levels by the HSE for medicines dispensed to patients on their behalf and reduced dispensing fees from the HSE. Stem cells… what is their potential? Evidence from animal models – Video

Stem cells... what is their potential? Evidence from animal models http://www.stemcells.arthritistreatment.com Stem cells can differentiate into different cell lines due to various capabilities. The first report that stem cells could possibly heal cartilage came from a study done with New Zealand rabbits. Full thickness cartilage defects were treated with collagen sponges soaked with mesenchymal stem cells. The stem cells differentiated into chondrocytes. In another study published in the BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders journal, , labeled autologous adult stem cells were injected into the joints of arthritic donkeys. Significant improvement was noted in clinical as well as x-ray changes. Histopathological improvements were also seen. Importantly, injected stem cells were incorporated into the cartilage of the injected joint. Challenges remain though. What is an adequate number of cells needed to home in on the area of damage? What is the long term safety? What is the durability of the benefit? http By: Nathan Wei … Continue reading

Blood-based biomarkers may lead to earlier diagnosis of Parkinson's disease

Posted: Published on January 21st, 2013

Jan. 20, 2013 Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurological condition. At present, it is usually diagnosed only when motor features are present. Hence, there is a need to develop objective and measurable biomarkers to improve PD diagnostics during its earlier stage, prior to its motor onset. In this pilot study, researchers identified and tested the first blood-based circulating microRNA (miRNA) biomarkers for PD. Their results are published in the latest issue of Journal of Parkinson's Disease. PD is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder in the United States, affecting approximately one million Americans and five million people worldwide. Its prevalence is projected to double by 2030. The most obvious symptoms are movement-related, such as involuntary shaking and muscle stiffness; later, cognitive and behavioral problems may develop along with additional peripheral symptoms such as gastrointestinal dysfunction. There is currently no cure, although the drug levodopa can relieve the symptoms. The differential diagnosis of PD is based primarily on subjective clinical rating scales associated with motor functions. As these scales can only be used when motor features are present, 60-70% of a patient's dopaminergic neurons are already lost by the time of diagnosis. "The ideal biomarker should be minimally-invasive, cost efficient, … Continue reading
