Gazette.Net: At CytImmune, Lawrence Tamarkin is on a gold rush

Posted: Published on January 18th, 2013

Bill Ryan/The Gazette I believe we need to use nanomedicine to do something new, not simply repackage existing ways of treatment, says Lawrence Tamarkin, CEO of CytImmune, holding a vial of CYT-6091 at his Rockville lab. Lawrence Tamarkin was on the brink of a discovery that could change the paradigm of cancer treatment delivery when the Great Recession forced his company to slow down. But with some key contacts and flexibility, Tamarkin says he is now ready to show the world what his technology can do. Tamarkin, 65, is CEO and co-founder of CytImmune Sciences, a Rockville clinical stage nanomedicine company with a core focus on the discovery, development and commercialization of multifunctional, tumor-target therapies. Nanomedicine involves manipulating matter on an atomic and molecular scale and applying that to medical therapies. In CytImmunes case, its leading nanomedicine candidate, CYT-6091, or Aurimune, binds a water-absorbent compound and tumor necrosis factor, a cytokine that attacks cancerous cells, to a gold nanoparticle. Gold nanoparticles have been used since the 1930s to safely treat patients with rheumatoid arthritis, Tamarkin said. The technology behind binding compounds to gold nanoparticles is the subject of CytImmunes 90 patents, he said. I believe we need to use nanomedicine … Continue reading

Scottish Independence Yes Campaign Glasgow Launch Dennis Canavan – Video

Posted: Published on January 18th, 2013

Scottish Independence Yes Campaign Glasgow Launch Dennis Canavan Dennis Canavan relates his experiences of travelling down to and back from Westminster as a Labour MP and arriving on the early morning sleeper which he found a misnomer because he couldn't sleep on them and would feel the need to go to bed once he got home. But there were often duties to be done in the constituency and outside at that time. He was often invited by the students in Glasgow University Labour Club. At that time in the 70s GU Labour Club felt itself to be a very radical outfit, very anti-establishment. In fact they were so anti-establishment and so radical and so left-wing that they didn't even participate in the debates with other students. It was clearly a reaction to a previous era of Labour politicians who graduated from there in the 50s and 60s including the late John Smith and Donald Dewar and because Smith and Dewar used to get dressed up in a suit and a bow tie and take part in debates but the students of the 60s and 70s reacted against this and said they wanted nothing to do with these establishment … Continue reading

The webinar, Cooch said, will introduce a new four-part philosophy that can help organizations of any size and specialty to boost their profitability and increase patient satisfaction along the way. In my experience most medical professionals dont like to market themselves; its not why they got into medicine, Cooch explained. Cooch has identified four areas that all healthcare providers should be focusing … Continue reading

Prescriptions for improving American income inequality

Posted: Published on January 18th, 2013

NEW YORK Contrary to promises that lower tax rates for the rich would raise all boats, the tide went out for most Americans over the past three decades as most of the wealth created by the US economy was absorbed by those at the top. Households in the middle three bands or quintiles of US earners roughly equating to lower middle, middle and upper middle class all lost ground to the top fifth (20 percent). And the distance between the top and bottom 20 percent is pulling further and further apart. This even as Americans worked longer hours with greater productivity and as their wives joined the workforce en masse. Compounding the problem, American workers found themselves facing global rather than just local competitive pressures. Indeed, the richer you are, the better the story of the past three decades has been. The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office reports that the share of US national income going to the richest 1 percent of Americans has doubled since 1980, from 10 percent to 20 percent, about where it was in 1910. For the super-rich, about 16,000 families with an average annual income of $24 million representing to 0.01 percent, has quadrupled, from just … Continue reading

Health: Cancer studies often downplay chemo side effects

Posted: Published on January 18th, 2013

Health Posted on 06:28 PM, January 17, 2013 Doctors relying on studies published in top journals for guidance on treating women with breast cancer may not be getting the most accurate information, with the side effects of various treatments downplayed, according to a North American study. Investigators want to go overboard to make their studies look positive, said Ian Tannock, senior author of the study that appeared in the Annals of Oncology. In two-thirds of the 164 studies that Tannock and his colleagues scrutinized, that meant not listing serious side effects, whether of chemotherapy, radiation or surgery, in the papers abstract. Such abstracts summarize the findings, and run a few hundred words. Thats important, said Tannock, at Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto, because doctors have little time to read. Most of us are so damn busy, we only read the abstract and skim the tables and figures, he added. In fact, a fifth of the studies didnt include serious side effects in results tables, and about a third failed to mention them in either the abstract or the discussion section. Most surprising, said Tannock, was that in a third of the studies, if the treatment didnt work as well as … Continue reading

DrugRisk Update: New Study Adds to Yaz Blood Clot Risks as Settlements Continue

Posted: Published on January 18th, 2013

Dallas, TX (PRWEB) January 18, 2013 The prescription drug resource center DrugRisk.com is alerting women taking the birth control drugs Yaz or Yasmin of a new study added to the site showing blood clot risks may be higher with these contraceptives. Also, those suffering from migraines may have a heightened risk. The goal of DrugRisk is to improve patient safety through education. This includes the latest medication studies, recalls, and litigation news. Although recent studies have linked Yaz to blood clots, this is the first weve seen that specifically addresses women suffering from migraines, explains DrugRisk representative Ryan Mayer. DrugRisk recently added information from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, who became the latest group to warn that birth control pills containing drospirenone, like Yaz and Yasmin, may cause higher risks of blood clots.* Frances Health Ministry has also said they will stop reimbursements for the drugs over similar concerns.** Now, a new study from Brigham and Womens Faulkner Hospital in Boston added to the resource center found that, while combined hormone contraceptives like Yaz and Yasmin may raise blood clot risks for all women, the risks are significantly higher for those suffering migraines.*** DrugRisk has learned that thousands … Continue reading

Recalled Iron Supplement Could Cause Serious Side Effects

Posted: Published on January 18th, 2013

WASHINGTON, DC Bottles of Rugby Natural Iron Supplement could contain a completely different substance and cause serious side effects, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said this week. The supplement has been recalled by its maker, Advance Pharmaceutical Inc. The recall applies to one lot of supplements: 12G468. Instead of containing ferrous sulfate as described on the label, the bottles could contain meclizine, a drug used to treat nausea, vomiting, and dizziness. It is commonly used to prevent motion sickness. (See the difference between ferrous sulfate tablets and meclizine tablets.) Taking meclizine may cause serious side effects to those who consume alcohol or other sedatives, those with a pre-existing CNS disorder, those with imprinted kidney or liver function, the elderly, nursing infants of lactating mothers who received the drug and newborns of mothers who received the drug immediately before childbirth, said the recall notice.
