New ‘Side Effects’ Trailer is Fraught With Prescription Drug Paranoia

Posted: Published on January 7th, 2013

Director Steven Soderbergh and screenwriter Scott Z. Burns have spent the last couple years making genre films with prestige casts to explore modern anxieties in a unique manner. The Informant! tackled fears of impotence and mediocrity through the story of a guy who envisions himself as a powerful insder agent.Contagion charted paranoia about the ever-closer proximity in which we live with others, usinga tagline that warned Dont talk to anyone. Dont touch anyone. Now the two finish out an informal anxiety trilogy withSide Effects. The filmwraps a thriller structure around a look at the insidious pharmaceutical industry, and the ways in which we rely on it, often blindly. A short new trailer for the film dropped today. Its a brief edit, just a minute long, but the effect is much bigger than the short running time as a husband and wife (Channing Tatum and Rooney Mara) deal with the fallout of the womans use of medication. More than a few things are obscured in this trailer, but theres enough here to get my attention. Side Effects hits on February 8. Apple has this trailer. SIDE EFFECTS is a provocative thriller about Emily and Martin (Rooney Mara and Channing Tatum), a … Continue reading

Motorists miffed as gas prices jump ten cents overnight

Posted: Published on January 7th, 2013

By TEARSA SMITH6 News Anchor/Reporter KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Motorists driving around town on Thursday morning trying to fill up that gas tank noticed that something changed overnight. In many communities, gas is now $3.18 for regular unleaded. It was about $3.09 Wednesday, prompting many to wonder what is causing the spike. "It's outrageous," said motorist Dennis Carter. "I can't believe it's gone up so much in one day." Quick fill-ups at the gas pump are leaving lasting impressions on those looking to make a dollar go a long way. "That's the second big jump in the last couple of days," said driver Scott Hall. "It kills me. I've gone from trying to put $20 in for going to work for the week to putting in and now it's costing me about $45." With Knoxville's average for regular unleaded sitting at $3.12 and many gas stations showing an even higher price, drivers are watching the national headlines and how they are playing into what we are paying. Still, experts say the prices we're seeing could have been higher. "With the fiscal cliff negotiations done, the speculation, the thought was that the speculators would drive the prices up because they would see … Continue reading

Ex-Rep. Patrick Kennedy Battles Pot Legalization

Posted: Published on January 7th, 2013

Liberal Says Painkiller Addiction Taught Valuable Lesson By Reuters Published January 05, 2013. Retired Rhode Island Congressman Patrick Kennedy is taking aim at what he sees as knee-jerk support for marijuana legalization among his fellow liberals, in a project that carries special meaning for the self-confessed former Oxycontin addict. Kennedy, 45, a Democrat and younger son of the late Lion of the Senate Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts, is leading a group called Project SAM (Smart Approaches to Marijuana) that opposes legalization and seeks to rise above Americas culture war over pot with its images of long-haired hippies battling law-and-order conservatives. Project proposals include increased funding for mental health courts and treatment of drug dependency, so those caught using marijuana might avoid incarceration, get help and potentially have their criminal records cleared. Kennedy wants cancer patients and others with serious illnesses to be able to obtain drugs with cannabinoids, but in a more regulated way that could involve the U.S. Food and Drug Administration playing a larger role. The eight-term former congressman from Rhode Island and the group he chairs will put forth their plan on Wednesday with a media appearance in Denver. Their efforts follow the November election that … Continue reading

Lance Armstrong may admit he used banned drugs: NY Times

Posted: Published on January 7th, 2013

(Reuters) - Lance Armstrong, the American cyclist at the center of the biggest doping scandal in the sport's history, may admit he used performance-enhancing drugs during his career, the New York Times reported in Saturday's editions, citing unidentified sources. Such an admission would be a stunning reversal for Armstrong, who has vehemently denied doping for years. The Times reported that Armstrong, 41, has told associates and anti-doping officials he may make the admission in hopes of persuading anti-doping officials to allow him to resume competition in athletic events that adhere to the World Anti-Doping Code, under which Armstrong is currently subject to a lifetime ban. Asked if Armstrong might admit to doping, Armstrong's lawyer Tim Herman told the Times: "Lance has to speak for himself on that." The newspaper, citing an unidentified person briefed on the situation, said Armstrong has been in discussions with the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) and met with Travis Tygart, the agency's chief executive. The paper, citing the same source, said Armstrong is also seeking to meet with David Howman, the director general of the World Anti-Doping Agency. Armstrong's lawyer denied his client had talked with Tygart, according to the Times. Howman said in a … Continue reading
