Desperate patients seek stem-cell ‘miracle,’ but scientists warn of hidden dangers

Posted: Published on January 3rd, 2013

Boca Raton parents Gary and Judy Susser say the know the hope and promise of stem-cell therapy. Nine years ago they traveled to Mexico for stem cell injections for their son Adam, who has cerebral palsy. "Maybe it will do some good," Gary Susser said he and his wife thought at the time. They spent $25,000. But the Sussers stopped stem cell injections in 2005, after spending about $25,000 and seeing no improvement. Now armed with more information, the Sussers are grateful the treatments didn't harm Adam, now 12. While they are advocates of "responsible" stem cell research, they warn other parents against making trips to Costa Rica, Mexico, Russia or other offshore clinics for experimental treatments. With promising breakthroughs making the news, as well as Internet hype, desperate parents and seriously ill patients may look to stem-cell therapy as the modern miracle that could cure them. And one day, stem cells may be routinely used to repair damaged cells, improve the treatment of diseases and even cure paralysis. But there are hidden dangers to today's stem cell treatments, both in the U.S. and offshore, scientists said at the recent World Stem Cell Summit in West Palm Beach. They pointed … Continue reading

Local Family Using Breakthrough Autism Treatment

Posted: Published on January 3rd, 2013

(DAPHNE, Ala.) - Autism is known as the fastest-growing serious developmental disability in the United States, and, so far, it has no means of detection or cure; only a vast array of therapies and studies. However there is a treatment that is making a big difference for one Daphne child, and hundreds of others in the area. The relatively new therapy called Integrated Listening uses the power of music, and is used at Kids Kount in Daphne. "We've never seen a child that never made marked gains," Occupational Therapist Cindy Dawkins said. "Out of 35 years of being an occupational therapist, this has been the most powerful tool that I've used." Dawkins said the therapy calls for an iPod, some special headphones and digitally-altered classical music. The system stimulates multi-tasking in the brain by having the autistic child listen to the music while performing various tasks. "He's listening to music through the ear cups, and he's also listening through bone conduction," Dawkins said. "There's a small transducer in the top of the headphones so the music is transmitted by bone conduction as well as air conduction." Dawkins said it's had a worked tremendously for hundreds of children they have treated. … Continue reading

On Thursday, the Illinois Republican took 45 more climbing the stairs to the Senates front door while colleagues cheered him on. Yeah, Mark! the crowd shouted as Kirk, 53, mounted the steps, slowly and stiffly, with Vice President Biden grasping his right arm. Welcome back! Kirk stopped several times along the way, leaning on a four-pronged cane for support. When he finally reached the top, he was greeted by loud applause. A year ago, Kirk would have bounded up the steps in moments. Psychosocial distress: How does it affect your stroke risk?

Posted: Published on January 3rd, 2013

A stroke is a serious neurological disorder in which blood flow stops to a part of the brain. In the United States, a stroke occurs every 40 seconds, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The halt in blood flow can result from a blood clot (an ischemic stroke) or a bursting blood vessel causing bleeding in the brain (a hemorrhagic stroke). When the blood supply to the brain is stopped, some of the brain cells in the affected area die immediately, while others are at risk for death, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. Immediate treatment can save those cells. The cause of the stroke will dictate the intervention given. If the stroke was caused by a blood clot, the patient will receive thrombolytics (clot-busting drugs). However, those medications would exacerbate a hemorrhagic stroke, so in such a case they would not be used. Several factors can increase an individuals risk of having a stroke. Some of these risk factors are unmodifiable, such as increasing age, gender, family risk and race. While a stroke can occur at any age, the risk for stroke doubles for each decade after age 55, noted the National … Continue reading
