For Autism Researcher, Yankee Stadium is Field of Dreams Watch more videos at: http://www.entrepreneur.com In this Thought Leaders video series, we take a look at where today's game changers find inspiration. Dr. Joan Fallon was working in private practice when she discovered that children with autism often had enzyme deficiencies. With the help of angel investors, she formed biotechnology firm Curemark in Rye, NY, and began working on an enzyme-replacement therapy. Her autism treatment, currently in trials, has been placed in the Food Drug Administration's fast-track program, which expedites the review of new drugs. There is currently no drug that treats the core symptoms of autism, which affects one in 88 children, according to the Centers for Disease Control Prevention. In this video, we head to Yankee Stadium, where Fallon is a season-ticket holder. The ups and downs of baseball are a lot like entrepreneurship, she says. And the game is all about hope, something she hopes to bring to families dealing with autism. Iraqi president stroke fuels succession talk

Posted: Published on December 20th, 2012

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraqi President Jalal Talabani was responding to treatment on Wednesday after suffering a stroke that raised fears of a messy succession battle to replace the Kurd leader who has mediated among Iraq's competing factions. "He is showing clear signs of improvement," Najmaldin Karim, the governor of Iraq's Kirkuk city who is also a doctor, told Reuters. The 79-year-old former guerrilla, who has helped ease tensions among Shi'ites, Sunnis, and Kurds and in the growing dispute over oil between Baghdad and the country's autonomous Kurdistan, was admitted to hospital on Monday night. He was in intensive care with a specialist team including doctors from Germany, where he received treatment in the past. Under Iraq's constitution, parliament elects a new president if his post becomes vacant. Iraq's power-sharing deal calls for the presidency to go to a Kurd while two vice president posts are shared by a Sunni and a Shi'ite. Talabani survived wars, exile and infighting in northern Iraq to become the country's first Kurdish president a few years after the 2003 invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein. He has since been pivotal in navigating through the political turmoil in Iraq's fragile power-sharing government that is split among Shi'ite … Continue reading

Iraqi president's stroke fuels fears of crisis

Posted: Published on December 20th, 2012

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraqi President Jalal Talabani is to be transferred to Germany for treatment for a stroke that may end his moderating influence in a dispute edging Baghdad and the country's autonomous Kurdistan region closer to a confrontation over oil. The portly 79-year-old former guerrilla, who has often mediated among Iraqi Shi'ites, Sunnis, and Kurds and between the Arab-led central government and the self-ruled Kurdish enclave, was admitted to hospital on Monday night. Talabani survived wars, exile and infighting in northern Iraq to become the country's first Kurdish president a few years after the U.S-led 2003 invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein. Talabani was in a stable condition and would most likely be transferred to Germany within 24 hours, Najmaldin Karim, the governor of the city of Kirkuk who is also part of the president's medical team, told Reuters on Wednesday. A team of doctors from Germany who had treated Talabani for past illnesses had recommended he be moved there after evaluating him in a Baghdad hospital, Karim said. It was unclear when or if the Kurdish statesman would be able to return to his post and his potential exit from politics could not have come at a worse time … Continue reading

Iraqi President Talabani's health improving after stroke

Posted: Published on December 20th, 2012

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraqi President Jalal Talabani's health condition was improving on Wednesday and he responded well to treatment in a Baghdad hospital two days after suffering a stroke, his medical team coordinator said. His sudden illness prompted questions about Talabani's exit from politics where he has been a key mediator among Shi'ite, Sunni, and Kurds and helped ease tensions in the growing dispute over oil between Baghdad and the country's autonomous Kurdistan. The elderly Kurdish statesman was admitted to hospital on Monday night after suffering a form of stroke and was in intensive care with a team of specialists including some doctors from Germany, where he received treatment in the past. "He has been responsive. He is showing clear signs of improvement," Najmaldin Karim, the governor of Iraq's Kirkuk city who is also a doctor, told Reuters. A 79-year-old former guerrilla who spent years fighting for Kurdish rights, Talabani survived wars, exile and infighting in northern Iraq to become the country's first Kurdish president a few years after the 2003 invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein. He has since been pivotal in navigating through the political turmoil that often erupts in Iraq's fragile power-sharing government, split among Shi'ite Muslims, Sunni … Continue reading
