Posted: Published on December 8th, 2012

BILLERICA, Mass., Dec. 7, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --Seahorse Bioscience, the world leader in instrumentation and assay kits for measuring cell metabolism announces travel award recipients who presented at the Asia Mito 2012 Conference, November 2-5, 2012, in Beijing. Seahorse XF Analyzers and stress test kits are the industry standard for simultaneously measuring the two major energy pathways of the cell - mitochondrial respiration and glycolysis - in a microplate, in real-time. XF Analyzers quickly and easily ensure reliable and reproducible data, revealing a new level of detail regarding the interplay between these energy-producing pathways and disease. "Increasingly studies revealthat Sirt3 plays a pivotal role in the regulation ofmitochondrial metabolism. The XF Analyzer has given us the opportunity to explore howSirt3 mediates energy homeostasisthrough deacetylating mitochondrialproteins, and has enhanced our research by helping us further understand the relationship between the Sirt3 deficiency, and compromisedaerobic respiratoryin mitochondrial diseases," stated Yu Ting Wu, Ph.D Seahorse supports the exploration of cell metabolism through travel awards that are offered to graduate students, post-doctoral researchers, and young investigators who present a poster or presentation citing data generated on the XF platform at scientific meetings and conferences. Sarepta Therapeutics shares after treatment update

Posted: Published on December 8th, 2012

Shares of Sarepta Therapeutics Inc. slid Friday, even though the company announced more positive results from a study of its Duchenne muscular dystrophy drug eteplirsen. THE SPARK: The Cambridge, Mass., company said Friday patients treated with eteplirsen for more than a year did better on a six-minute walking test than those treated with a placebo for 24 weeks and the drug for 38 weeks in the extension of a mid-stage trial. THE BIG PICTURE: Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a genetic disease that causes increasing muscle weakness. It is caused by a lack of the protein dystrophin, and it affects only boys. The condition occurs in about 1 of every 3,600 male infants. The National Institutes of Health say patients typically die before the age of 25. Sarepta's stock nearly tripled in value in early October after it said eteplirsen slowed the progress of the disease and increased patients' dystrophin levels. The shares also jumped in July when the company announced some initial results of the trial extension. Eteplirsen is the most advanced drug candidate for Sarepta, formerly known as AVI BioPharma. THE ANALYSIS: Steve Brozak of WBB Securities said the stock is suffering a little bit from "news fatigue." "This … Continue reading

Laser acupuncture for those who fear the needle

Posted: Published on December 8th, 2012

New Delhi, Dec. 8 -- Once considered as a very effective remedy to beat stress and manage painful joint pains, acupuncture has today found wide acceptance as a treatment to manage chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes and joint pains caused by arthritis and sinusitis. It is also used to manage the side effects of cancer therapy and Parkinson's disease, improve impaired vision, and even bring people out of paralysis and coma. "It is being increasingly used as an analgesic for painless childbirth and to smooth out wrinkles in place of Botox, where it is proving to be a safe option with efficient results," said Delhi-based practitioner Raman Kapur, who heads the department of acupuncture, Ganga Ram Hospital. It has also shown results in children suffering from attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism and other learning disabilities. "It is completely safe provided it is conducted by an experienced practitioner," said Kapur, who organised a two-day international conference and workshop to showcase new treatment trends in acupuncture to doctors, acupuncturists and physicians from across India. Inserting needles into the body sounds painful, but Kapur assures there is a painless procedure as well. "For people who are apprehensive of needles, we have laser … Continue reading

Judge to make radiotherapy ruling

Posted: Published on December 8th, 2012

A High Court judge is to decide whether a seven-year-old boy can undergo radiotherapy treatment following surgery on a brain tumour. On Friday, Mr Justice Bodey heard that Neon Roberts' mother Sally did not want doctors to begin radiotherapy treatment. Ms Roberts, 37, of Brighton, East Sussex, told a High Court hearing in London she feared that radiotherapy would cause Neon long-term harm. But doctors said Neon might die within months without radiotherapy treatment and urged the judge to give them the go-ahead. Mr Justice Bodey said he would announce his decision later. He said neither any hospital where Neon received treatment nor any medic involved should be identified in reports. Neon's father Ben, who lives in London and is separated from Ms Roberts, had agreed to radiotherapy but was "apprehensive", the court heard. Mr Justice Bodey said Neon's illness was the "stuff of every parent's nightmare". He said he would balance what radiotherapy treatment would achieve against the "downsides".
