H- Brazilian Police Targeted in Drug War Assassinations – Video

Posted: Published on November 16th, 2012

H- Brazilian Police Targeted in Drug War Assassinations A female police officer is gunned down in front of her daughter in Sao Paulo, Brazil. 44-year-old Marta Umbelina da Silva, 44, was opening the garage in her home Saturday night when she was shot 10 times. Her 11-year-old daughter screamed for help, but it was too late. Authorities say more than half of the 95 police murders this year in greater Sao Paulo have occurred in similar execution-style fashion. Some fear the crackdown on drugs in the country is turning into an outright war. [Claudio Mendes, Salesman]: "We feel a lot of fear. I think we should mobilize because we, the people, are the ones suffering the most because we stand in the middle of the crossfire, with the police on one side and criminals on the other side." The bloodshed has been concentrated in poorer areas and has not caused major disruptions to Sao Paulo's business community. But the violence is feeding doubts over whether Brazil can guarantee safety during the 2014 World Cup soccer tournament, which is scheduled to open in Sao Paulo. Drugs charges against Bon Jovi's daughter dropped

Posted: Published on November 16th, 2012

Published: 12:58PM Friday November 16, 2012 Source: BANG Showbiz Singer Jon Bon Jovi - Source: BANG Showbiz Drug charges against Jon Bon Jovi's teenage daughter are set to be dropped. Police were called after the Hamilton College student - whose father battled drug addiction in his youth - was found unresponsive in her dorm room in Kirkland, New York, but 19-year-old Stephanie Rose Bongiovi and the male who was with her won't face charges. According to gossip website TMZ, the District Attorney dropped all charges because of a "New York law that specifically prohibits prosecution of people experiencing a drug overdose -- as well as the people who help them seek medical care". A small bag of heroin along with marijuana and other drug paraphernalia were reportedly discovered in Bongiovi's room. Her troubles come shortly after Bon Jovi was forced to cut short his UK publicity tour and boarded a private jet to return to his wife and children after their $US24 million home was badly damaged by Hurricane Sandy leaving them stranded without power. A source close to the 50-year-old singer said: "He was really incredibly anxious for his family who were stuck in New York in an apartment … Continue reading

Expensive cancer drugs 'hit budget'

Posted: Published on November 16th, 2012

CANCER patients are being given expensive drugs that extend their lives by just a few months or provide no benefit, risking a health budget blow-out. Cancer researcher Deme Karikios said the total cost to the federal government of subsidising cancer drugs had risen from $65 million to more than $500 million in the decade to 2010. "We are seeing some drugs approved that extend median survival by only a few months, yet they add hundreds of millions of dollars to health system costs,'' Dr Karikios, from the University of Sydney, said. ''Many are asking whether that money could be better spent." Much of the increase was due to the ''explosion'' of new cancer drugs in recent years. Advertisement Dr Karikios' research, conducted through the National Health and Medical Research Council Clinical Trials Centre, found the average cost of a newly listed cancer drug through the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme in 2010 was $5000 per month. ''We need to rethink how drugs are approved in Australia, or hard decisions may need to be made in future about which drugs patients can access.'' It was important for researchers and clinicians to identify those patients for whom new treatments would be effective, Dr Karikios … Continue reading

US cannabis vote reignites call to legalise drugs

Posted: Published on November 16th, 2012

15 November 2012 Last updated at 19:02 ET By James Melik Reporter, Business Daily, BBC World Service The US states of Washington and Colorado have voted to legalise the possession and sale of marijuana for recreational purposes, in defiance of federal law, setting the stage for a potential showdown with President Barack Obama's administration. However, it reawakens the debate about whether banned drugs should go on sale legally. Not only could such a move potentially open up a huge commercial market, but it could also become a source of tax revenue. But it is an extremely controversial issue and even in the Netherlands, which led the way with its cannabis cafes, the policy is now being questioned. In the Netherlands, marijuana is not formally legal, but it can be sold in small quantities in licensed coffee shops. In one such coffee shop, on a houseboat on the river Maas in the southern Dutch town of Maastricht, Stephan explains there are about 5,000 varieties of marijuana, or cannabis, in the world. You can never win a war against drugs, you can only control it by being realistic and pragmatic "We sell white rhino, silver haze, amnesia, lemon haze. We sell blue … Continue reading

Innovative Drugs to Transform European Alzheimer's Disease Medication Market by 2015, Says Frost & Sullivan

Posted: Published on November 16th, 2012

Projected launch of disease-modifying drugs to set new industry standards LONDON, Nov. 14, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The patent expiry of all four existing EMEA approved drugs for Alzheimer's disease (AD) by 2015 is likely to cause a steep decline in the growth of the European AD medication market. However, the approval of next generation therapies that can delay disease progression and restore cognitive functions are expected to revive opportunities in the market from 2015 to 2018. New analysis from Frost & Sullivan ( http://www.healthcare.frost.com( http://www.frost.com/prod/servlet/svcg.pag/HCLS )), European Alzheimer's Disease Medication Market, estimates the market to earn US$1.80 billion in 2012 and reach US$4.78 billion in 2019, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15.1% from 2012-2019. "Increasing R&D activity and a strong pipeline of disease modifying drugs bode well for market expansion," notes Frost & Sullivan Senior Research Analyst Aiswariya Chidambaram. "Considerable unexplored opportunities and the commercial goldmine that is the AD medication market have motivated several pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies to invest in R&D, particularly targeting the moderate-to-severe patient group." Existing drug classes for AD offer poor therapeutic efficacy. The core focus of new R&D approaches has therefore centered on novel disease modifying drugs. "These drugs are … Continue reading
