RBCC: n3D Technology Advances Cell Research

Posted: Published on November 7th, 2012

NOKOMIS, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Rainbow Biosciences, the biotech subsidiary of Rainbow Coral Corp. (RBCC), announced today that 3D cell culturing technology developed by its joint venture partner Nano3D BioSciences (n3D) was recently used in a breakthrough study using stem cells. Dr. Mikhail Kolonin, an associate professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, and Dr. Glauco Souza of n3D authored a study that demonstrates how effective 3D cell culturing by magnetic levitation is in generating white adipose tissue organoids, or adiposphere. In a significant breakthrough, these 3D structures presented vascular-like structures when pre-adpocyte stem cells were co-cultured with endothelial cells. The study, Adipose tissue engineering in three-dimensional levitation tissue culture system based on magnetic nanoparticles, was published in the journal Tissue Engineering C. This paper shows just how valuable n3Ds Bio-Assembler can be in ground-breaking research being conducted around the world, said RBCC CEO Patrick Brown. As more and more high-profile cell researchers discover this systems potential, the market for the technology will continue to grow exponentially. The Bio-Assemblers fusion of magnetic levitation and nanoparticle assembly technology allows it to produce accurate, 3D representations of in vivo tissues faster and easier than any other existing tools. The incredible … Continue reading

Etiologic diagnosis of nonsyndromic genetic hearing loss in adult vs pediatric populations

Posted: Published on November 7th, 2012

Public release date: 5-Nov-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Mary Stewart mstewart@entnet.org 703-535-3762 American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery Alexandria, VA Genetic testing for a certain mutation in pediatric patients is valuable in determining a cause for unexplained hearing loss, according to a study in the November 2012 issue of OtolaryngologyHead and Neck Surgery. The study's authors state that testing for some of the most common mutations that cause sensorineural hearing loss in a targeted way, rather than through generalized screening of hearing loss patients, yields the best results. University of Miami NIH-funded researchers led by Dr. Xue Zhong Liu, a physician-scientist, conducted a nine-year study on 221 adult and 163 pediatric patients with sensorineural hearing loss. Blood samples were screened for mutations in GJB2 and GJB6 and mitochondrial DNA mutations, audiometric tests were conducted, and patient and family histories were taken. Mutations in the GJB2/GJB6 genes were identified in 23 of 163 pediatric patients (14%), but only 3 of 221 adults (1%). Thirteen percent of the pediatric patients were determined to be carriers. The mitochondrial testing in adults returned a higher rate (3%) than what is usually reported (1%). Identifying DFNB1 mutations early will … Continue reading

Pacific Biosciences Delivers Enhanced DNA Sequencing Chemistry and Software to Help Solve Complex Genetic Problems

Posted: Published on November 7th, 2012

MENLO PARK, Calif., Nov. 6, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Pacific Biosciences of California, Inc. (PACB) provider of the PacBio(R)RS High Resolution Genetic Analyzer, today announced the latest enhancements to its DNA sequencing system, the XL release featuring new chemistry and software for extraordinarily long read lengths that average 5,000 bases. Pacific Biosciences' Single Molecule, Real-Time (SMRT(R)) sequencing generates reads an order of magnitude longer than other leading DNA sequencing technologies. With the latest advance, the average read length increases 67 percent from 3,000 to 5,000 bases, with some reads as long as 20,000 bases. Long reads are critical for resolving genetic complexity in applications such as the assembly and finishing of genomes, phasing genomic variation over long distances, understanding human nucleotide repeat disorders, and resolving the structure of alternatively spliced transcripts. The new XL release provides increased read lengths through a combination of chemistry and software. The new chemistry includes a faster polymerase that reads more bases per second. This release also includes the Stage Start feature, which produces longer reads by enabling sequence data collection to begin when the polymerase is activated. Additionally, PacBio has increased the length of time the instrument can record data during the sequencing reaction, … Continue reading

The world of genetic fingerprinting

Posted: Published on November 7th, 2012

Q. What is genetic fingerprinting? How valuable is it in crime investigations and tracing one's parentage? --mar_g2009@yahoo.com A. Genetic fingerprinting (DNA testing; DNA typing; DNA profiling) refers to the process of identifying an individual by studying his DNA. DNA is short for deoxyribose nucleic acid, a molecule that can be found in the nucleus of each and every cell of the body, except for the red blood cells which do not have a nucleus. In the nucleus, the DNA molecules are contained in structures called chromosomes, of which there are 23 pairs in humans. Half of the 23 pairs of chromosomes that a person has have been inherited from his/her mother and the other half from his/her father. The DNA molecule in each chromosome is in the form of a very long but thin thread that consists of two twisted strands made up of sugar and phosphate molecules. At regular intervals, nitrogen-containing bases connect the two strands to each other-much like the two-sides of a ladder being connected by rungs. The human genome, which refers to the total amount of DNA present in the 23 pairs of chromosomes, contains three billion nitrogen bases. The sequencing or arrangement of these bases … Continue reading
