Posted: Published on November 7th, 2012

Rigla, asubsidiary ofpharmaceutical company Protek, has opened apharmacy inYekaterinburg where customers are served byrobots. Inthe pharmacy, anemployee enters alist ofmedicines, anda robot collects them within 10 to15 seconds. Theorder is then transported byconveyor belt tothe cash register. Therobot can also sort anddistribute medicines atthe warehouse. Apharmacy employee puts them onthe conveyor belt, while therobot scans them, determines their size andplaces them ona shelf. Theuse ofrobots has enabled thepharmacy toemploy just five people, compared with 10 atconventional drugstores, andto use space more efficiently, Rigla said. Theinstallation ofthe robots cost 200,000 euros ($256,000), while thepharmacy's revenue is projected atabout 20 million rubles ($637,350) per month. If theproject is successful, thetechnology will also be used atother Rigla pharmacies. Russia's largest pharmacy chain, A5, may follow suit andintroduce thetechnology, said Andrei Gusev, CEO ofthe chain. He said Paris' five largest pharmacies were equipped with similar robots. Currently, Russia only has afew drugstores that use robots, including inVladivostok, said Yelena Nevolina, executive director ofthe Pharmacy Guild, anindustry association. State bars former workers of Framingham pharmacy linked to meningitis outbreak from other compounding jobs

Posted: Published on November 7th, 2012

By Kay Lazar, Globe Staff Massachusetts regulators have ordered all pharmacists and pharmacy technicians who worked at the Framingham company linked to the national fungal meningitis outbreak to immediately stop working in the drug- compounding industry, a sign that state officials are concerned that its front-line workers might not have followed proper procedures. An Oct. 31 letter from the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Pharmacy obtained by the Globe states that the investigation of the outbreak had determined that pharmacists and pharmacy technicians employed by the New England Compounding Center may present an immediate or serious threat to the public health, safety, and welfare and should immediately cease. The board previously voted to seek the permanent surrender of New England Compoundings pharmacy license, as well as permanent revocation of the licenses of the companys three primary pharmacists, including Barry Cadden, a co-owner, and his wife, Lisa Conigliaro Cadden. New England Compounding closed early last month and recalled all of its products. A steroid produced at the company has been linked to 419 fungal meningitis cases and joint infections and 30 deaths, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Monday. A spokesman for the state health agency, which includes the … Continue reading

Lawmakers issue subpoena for pharmacy director

Posted: Published on November 7th, 2012

WASHINGTON (AP) -- House lawmakers have issued a subpoena for the director of the Massachusetts pharmacy linked to the deadly meningitis outbreak. The subpoena comes after Barry Cadden, co-founder of New England Compounding Center, indicated through his lawyer that he would not voluntarily attend a congressional hearing scheduled for Nov. 14, the Energy and Commerce Committee said Tuesday. A message sent to Cadden's lawyer seeking comment was not immediately returned. More than 400 people have been sickened by contaminated steroid shots distributed by the compounding pharmacy, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Thirty deaths have been reported. "Since Mr. Cadden has indicated he will not appear voluntarily, we are left with no choice but to issue a subpoena," said Rep. Fred Upton, R-Mich., who chairs the committee. "We urge Barry Cadden to put the public health first and answer the committee's questions about the deadly outbreak." House and Senate lawmakers have been investigating the outbreak since it surfaced last month. They have scheduled separate hearings next week to examine how it occurred and how future incidents can be prevented. A staffer for the Senate health committee said Cadden has not yet confirmed whether he will attend the … Continue reading

Posted: Published on November 5th, 2012

Stem Cells Arthritis Treatment Guided Mesenchymal Stem Cell Layering Technique... A Breakthrough? The next series of videos will focus on stem cells and arthritis treatment. The first thing I'm going to do is describe the guided mesenchymal stem cell layering technique. This is our proprietary method. If you have osteoarthritis and are looking for an alternative to joint replacement, you might want to pay attention. The Venn diagram shows the ingredients that go into the procedure- mesenchymal stem cells from marrow and fat, growth factors, from platelet-rich plasma, matrix, and a stabilizing gel (thrombin). What is different about our technique compared with others is we are able to induce a precise area of injury using direct guidance with arthroscopy and diagnostic ultrasound. The end result is cartilage growth and repair. If you're an active individual who wants to avoid the metal and plastic and the potential complications associated with a joint replacement, there is an alternative. Winston-Salem -- November is Epilepsy Awareness month and in Winston-Salem Saturday, that meant a sea of purple parading through downtown.. The Parade of Great Pyrenees brought bands, dancers and dogs into the streets of Winston Salem. Dr. Christine Dean, Epileptologisttold News 2: "What we are doing is trying to bring awareness to the difficult disorder that affects 2 percent of the population. She says early treatment is key if patients want to maintain at least partial control of the disorder. Why the Pyrenees?
