BioTime makes offer for Geron stem cell assets

Posted: Published on October 29th, 2012

NEW YORK (AP) Biotechnology company BioTime Inc. on Thursday proposed two transactions that would combine its stem cell therapy assets with those of Geron Corp. In a letter to Geron shareholders, BioTime suggests two deals that would form a new publicly traded company owning Geron's stem cell assets with some of BioTime's. It said Geron could have a stake of up to 45 percent in the company, which would also hold $40 million in BioTime stock along with shares of some BioTime stem cell subsidiaries. Geron shareholders would also receive BioTime stock-purchase warrants now valued at about $13 million. Geron, of Menlo Park, Calif., was a pioneering developer of stem cell therapies. But in November 2011 it said it would exit that business and focus on development of other products, including its experimental cancer drug imetelstat. "Nearly a year has now passed, and Geron has not announced any transaction that would provide value to either Geron or its shareholders from those stem cell assets," BioTime said in a press release. The Alameda, Calif., company said Geron shareholders should contact the board of directors and urge the company to have discussions with BioTime. Geron did not immediately respond to a request … Continue reading

Doctors don't promise cure with stem cell therapy

Posted: Published on October 29th, 2012

MANILA, Philippines Amid the recent warning issued by the Department of Health (DOH) regarding stem cell therapy, doctors who are offering the treatment in the Philippines clarified that they are not promising a cure. We are very careful about claiming cure. These days ang dami nagsasalita, nawala ang sakit. All of a sudden siya (stem cell therapy) na yung magic bullet ng buong mundo, like if you get stem cell, you get cured, said Dr. Michelle de Vera, deputy director of the Institute of Personalized Molecular Medicine at The Medical City. Kapag may narinig na ganyan dapat lalo silang mag-ingat. Cure is zero evidence of disease or kung genetic yung disease dapat napalitan yung genes mo. Hindi mangyayari yun at this point," he stressed. De Vera, an allergologist and immunologist, does stem cell therapy on her patients at The Medical City but he said he believes that the DOH is right in warning patients on stem cell therapy. Tama naman na magbigay sila ng warning,I think what their trying to do is regulate stem cell therapy, the doctor said. Public advisory The DOH recently came out with a public advisory on stem cell therapies saying that there is an "observed … Continue reading

Stem cell therapy 'wag katakutan

Posted: Published on October 29th, 2012

Continue reading

Perry brings his stem-cell cause to Houston

Posted: Published on October 29th, 2012

Gov. Rick Perry pushed Friday for Texas to become the center of adult stem-cell therapy, disregarding the federal government's increasing crackdown on clinics marketing the experimental medicine. Perry told a crowd of stem-cell researchers, industry leaders and patients gathered in Houston that the young science "holds the promise of miracles" desperately needed by people across the world and suggested Texas' "wildcat spirit" and "conducive climate" can make it happen here. "I'm not shy about asking people to relocate or start up their companies in Texas," said Perry, likening stem-cell treatment to previous innovations in space and heart care. "All of you outside the state of Texas - come on in. The water's fine. We've got an amazing environment here." Perry, who famously got the unlicensed treatment for an ailing back in 2011, said the state has made sure that innovators won't be "hindered by exorbitant taxes, wrapped up by bureaucratic red tape or at the mercy of predatory attorneys, seeking to make steady money off extensive, drawn-out court cases." Perry's remarks, made at the first of a planned annual Houston conference, came as the state appears headed toward a collision with the Food and Drug Administration, which has begun stepping … Continue reading

Stem cell therapy for muscle, sports injury alternative to surgery

Posted: Published on October 29th, 2012

By Erika Sauler Philippine Daily Inquirer MANILA, Philippines This type of stem cell therapy does not claim to be the fountain of youth, but an alternative treatment to arthritis, muscle pain and tendon tear. Two Filipino doctors who trained in the United States said in a media forum on Sunday that autologous stem cell therapy could speed up the healing of musculoskeletal and sports-related injuries, which could be an optional remedy before undergoing surgery. Dr. Jeimylo de Castro explained that the procedure would involve taking stem cells from the patients blood, fat tissue or bone marrow and injecting them to the injured area of the same person. This type of therapy is different from the controversial embryonic stem cells which are harvested from animals or fertilized eggs. With stem cell therapy being a current fad for anti-aging, the Department of Health has warned the public that the benefits of stem cell therapy are still under evaluation. The DOH will soon issue guidelines for the use of stem cell therapy and the licensing of facilities offering this service. De Castro and Dr. Franklin Domingo are both fellows of the Philippine Academy of Rehabilitation Medicine. They underwent training for stem cell therapy … Continue reading
