Photo by Allie Garza Zannos Grekos BONITA SPRINGS Bonita Springs physician Zannos Grekos, whose license is in jeopardy for controversial stem cell therapy, is getting his day before a judge. Barring a last-minute delay or settlement, an administrative hearing is scheduled to begin Tuesday in Naples for the 47-year-old. He is fighting to get his license back in good standing from a suspension order, while the state Department of Health is pursuing more discipline and potentially revocation of his license. Trained as a cardiologist, he's been licensed in Florida since 1996. The trial-like proceeding, without a jury, is scheduled for four days before an administrative law judge. The proceeding is open to the public. The case against Grekos has garnered considerable media attention, including CNN and inquiries from European media. A Texas father, Jimmy Bell, will be tracking what happens. Last year, he paid $57,000 upfront for his 5-year-old son, Jason, to undergo stem cell therapy to fight pulmonary hypertension. Despite pleas that his boy was weakening by the … Continue reading

New blast device issued to Aussie soldiers

Posted: Published on October 15th, 2012

Australian troops in Afghanistan are being issued with cutting-edge technology that quickly identifies any internal or brain injuries caused by an explosion. The blast gauges measure the pressure wave created by improvised explosive devices (IEDs), which have the potential to collapse lungs and cause massive brain damage even if a soldier is not caught in the blast itself. Unveiling the devices in Sydney on Monday, Defence Science and Personnel Minister Warren Snowdon said the gauges would help medics provide faster and better treatment. "This is very important because when people are involved in an IED they may not have any physical manifestations of the blast, but depending on the nature of the blast they may have internal injuries or brain injuries," the minister said. Mr Snowdon said the gauges, which are about the size of a 50-cent coin, would light up in red, amber or green after an explosion - red indicating a very high danger of internal or brain injury. About 400 soldiers deployed in Afghanistan have already received the devices, with another 10,000 of the items due to be rolled out over the next year. Each soldier will wear three devices - one on the chest, another on … Continue reading

How Thompson, Baldwin differ on stem cell research

Posted: Published on October 15th, 2012

Madison - The Nobel Prize in medicine last week went for research offering a possible alternative to embryonic stem cells, but voters attuned to questions of medical research and morality can still consider their alternatives in candidates. President Barack Obama and U.S. Senate candidate Tammy Baldwin support federal funding for the full range of stem cell research going on in labs like those at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney hasn't directly said, while a spokeswoman for U.S. Senate candidate Tommy Thompson, the Republican challenging Baldwin, said he supports federal funding for research on some embryonic stem cell lines but not others. The issue has gotten less attention nationally this election season but is still important in Wisconsin, the birthplace of human embryonic stem cell research and a leader in the study of how the tissues in our bodies grow. Embryonic stem cell research holds great promise to cure many diseases but is controversial because stem cell lines require the destruction of embryos already discarded by fertility clinics. Conservative groups are confident that both Romney and Thompson would at least roll back Obama's expansion of federal funding for embryonic stem cells. "The way we read (a Romney … Continue reading

Can genetic tests help you build a better workout?

Posted: Published on October 15th, 2012

Do we really need a test to tell us whether our genes are sabotaging our efforts to get fit? A burgeoning industry is being built on the promise that genetic tests can predict how individuals are likely to respond to exercise and at which types of physical activity they may do best, an alluring concept for those who have struggled to get fit for years and never seem to see the same results as others. As scientists gain a better understanding of genes, companies specializing in exercise-related genetic tests are cropping up. XRGenomics is one of the newest in the field. The company developed a test designed to look at a persons genes to predict whether they can easily improve their VO2 max, or their capacity for aerobic exercise. Simply put, the higher your VO2 max, the longer and harder you can exercise. The company says its test, available through its website, is different from many of its competitors, particularly because it is based on clinical research and it looks at a higher number of genes. The test focuses on genes linked to the bodys maximum capacity to carry oxygen to muscles during exercise. It can give people useful, accurate … Continue reading

We Are Scientists announce new album plans

October 14, 2012 12:21 New York band have begun working on the follow-up to 2010's 'Barbara' Photo Gallery: We Are Scientists We Are Scientists have announced they have returned to the studio to record the follow-up LP to 2010's 'Barbara'. In a typically humorous blog post, after much waffling about penis enlargement pills and Canadian dogs, the trio declared they were reconvening to begin working on their sixth studio album. The statement read: "Yes, we've once again drilled down hard into the music-making process, and once again found it to our liking," they added in-between more jokes about "dicks" and "dogs". They continued: "Once again, the songs are too hot to touch, which has us daily thanking Crom (our god) that they are not physical objects that ever need to be handled, really, just songs. We've started thinking about artwork, and an album title, and whether to use little blood splats or little bullet holes in place of all the o's in the song titles, and which large corporations to thank in the acknowledgements - nearly all of them have played a significant role! In other words, for those of you who've been literally holding your breath for the next … Continue reading

Recto’s equilibrium and erectile dysfunction

Posted: Published on October 15th, 2012

By Ellen Tordesillas Studies have shown that the ill-effects of smoking coupled with poor diet and lack of exercise are not limited to cardiovascular, respiratory disease, diabetes and cancer, which are afflicting Filipinos at their most productive age, 40's and early 50's. In one of the lectures, Dr. Anthony Leachon, cardiologist and consultant on non-communicable diseases of the Department of Health, said recent studies have shown that smoking causes erectile dysfunction. "You may not die of erectile dysfunction but some men die for it,"quipped Leachon, who is leading the campaign for the passage of the Sin Tax, not the Recto-fied version but the one that the authored by Sen. Miriam Santiago. He also supports the version passed by the House of Representatives authored by then Cavite Representative (now Secretary of Transportation and Communication) Joseph Abaya. Would Senator Ralph Recto, chairman of the Senate Committee on Ways and Means, and his pro-tobacco colleagues want a nation of men afflicted with erectile dysfunction? Unless they are in cahoots with manufacturers of Viagra, I don't think Recto has really considered the health aspects of the Sin Tax bill. Recto justified his junking of the Santiago bill which would have given the government additional … Continue reading

New psychiatric drugs low priority for pharmaceutical firms

Posted: Published on October 15th, 2012

The pharmaceutical industry has largely abandoned drug development for mental illnesses even though depression is a leading cause of disability, experts say. Authors of papers published in this week's issue of the journal Science Translational Medicine argue that drug discovery for treating psychiatric disorders such as autism, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and depression are at a near standstill. "Antipsychotics and antidepressants have been some of the most profitable agents for companies over the last two decades," said Dr. Thomas Insel, director of the U.S. National Institute of Mental Health and one of the authors. "But that doesn't mean they're effective. What it means is that they sell and they can be marketed." In the last five decades, more than 20 antipsychotics and 30 antidepressants have been marketed with over $25 billion in sales in the U.S. in 2011 alone, Insel said. The drugs are descended from serendipitous discoveries such as the mood stabilizing effects of lithium in 1949, said Steven Hyman of Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass., and the author of the second paper. "The central problem is clear: Neither vast unmet medical need, nor large and growing markets, nor concerted sales campaigns that attempt to recast 'me-too drugs' as innovative … Continue reading

Posted: Published on October 15th, 2012

KABUL, Afghanistan Afghan counternarcotics police poured gasoline on more than 24 tons of narcotics and other illegal substances, then set the pile ablaze on the outskirts of Kabul on Sunday, officials said. Afghan authorities said the drugs, drug-making chemicals and alcohol were seized in and around the capital during the past nine months. Baz Mohammad Ahmadi, deputy minister of counternarcotics at the Interior Ministry, said the destroyed drugs included 1,772 kilograms (3,900 pounds) of heroin; 2,764 kilograms (6,070 pounds) of opium; and 140 kilograms (308 pounds) of hashish. More than 12,100 liters (3,200 gallons) of alcohol as well as raisins used to make alcohol also were destroyed. "It is a considerable amount of narcotics," Ahmadi told reporters at the site as a cloud of black smoke spiraled over the burning drugs. "Compared with (a similar burn from a comparable period) last year, it's a 35 to 45 percent increase." He said 907 suspects had been arrested in connection with the seizure of the drugs and other materials. The police put the illegal substances into a large pile, mixed in some logs, doused it with gas and then lighted the material as police stood by applauding. Stephen McFarland, coordinating director for … Continue reading
