Mass. Pharmacy Co-founder Has Background In Recycling

The pharmacy linked to the nations deadly outbreak of meningitis is owned by two brothers-in-law who brought different but complementary skills to the venture: Ones a pharmacist, the other a risk-taking businessman who made his mark recycling old computers, fishing rope and mattresses. Now the New England Compounding Center and its practices are under scrutiny as investigators try to determine how a steroid solution supplied by the pharmacy apparently became contaminated with a fungus. The drug has sickened nearly 200 people in 12 states, killing 15. Most of the patients had received spinal injections of the steroid for back pain. NECC was founded in 1998 by Barry Cadden and Gregory Conigliaro as a compounding pharmacy, a laboratory that custom-mixes solution, creams and other medicines in dosages and forms that often are unavailable from pharmaceutical companies. Cadden, who is married to Conigliaros sister, Lisa, had the medical know-how behind NECC, earning a pharmacy degree from the University of Rhode Island. In a 2002 newsletter, he wrote that compounding had rebounded, after falling off when pharmaceutical companies began manufacturing drugs in the 1950s and `60s, and could help patients with painful conditions that demand novel approaches. Cadden, 45, backed his belief in … Continue reading

USU trainer: Treating concussions begins with not minimizing them

Posted: Published on October 14th, 2012

(Leah Hogsten | The Salt Lake Tribune) Utah State University has been a pioneer in treating and preventing concussions for more than a decade and Dale Mildenberger, head athletics trainer, is largely responsible for the approach. "We're adding to the global body of knowledge on concussions," Mildenberger said. Logan For Dale Mildenberger, the issue of chronic concussions in sports cant be solved by better treatment, better equipment or better awareness of the damage a head injury can cause. Treatment must start at the source of the issue: battling a belief ingrained in the culture of sports that downplaying injuries is not just an expectation, but a requirement. Too often in sports, terms such as "headaches" and "dings" are used to minimize the seriousness of what amounts to a brain injury in order to rush players back onto the field. Mildenberger, Utah State Universitys head athletic trainer, finds that part of sports culture both puzzling and unacceptable. "Its amazing to me that if a kid breaks a leg, there is no question if he should return [to play]. But if he breaks his brain, all of a sudden we want to find ways to put him back in [the game]." Mildenberger … Continue reading

Joining the World in Prayer for Malala

Children Image lifted fromhttp://paknews.pk The first thing that struck me as I read reports on Malalas shooting was the village name: Saidu Shareef. Living in Pakistan, we have been conditioned to hear of shootings, bombings and barbarity across the country and get on with our day; unless you know someone who lives where todays incidents took place. A selfish reaction, yes but required when you hear of so much every day. When drone attacks were at their peak, there was a situation in Pakistan known as the IDPs Internally Displaced Persons much like refugees, but because no international borders were crossed, they were homeless in their own homes. Campsites were set up across the country to house these people, all hailing from various quarters of the then North West Frontier Province (now KPK) and Balochistan regions. These were the less fortunate who didnt have family or friends they could set up house with temporarily, for an indefinite period. These camps helped them make new friends, formulate new families. I volunteered at one such camp in Swabi, NWFP, where I met a family from Saidu Shareef. From the minute Nasreen, a mother of three, propped her youngest, 8 months old at … Continue reading

Rizer XL Rated #1 Male Enhancement Pill by Total Penis Health

Posted: Published on October 13th, 2012

Male enhancement review website TotalPenisHealth.com has rated Rizer XL as the #1 male enhancement pill on the market for 2012. Total Penis Health compared Rizer XL against other leading competitors in several different categories including price, availability, and efficacy in relation to a number of male enhancement issues. (PRWEB) October 13, 2012 The Total Penis Health ratings were based on a long list of criteria with a heavy emphasis on a given product's ability to effectively treat premature ejaculation, erectile dysfunction, male libido issues, and more. Ratings also compared ingredients, how quickly each reviewed product acted, retail price, and product guarantees. TPH reviewers were quick to point out the fact that the creators of Rizer XL have not been content to sit on past achievements. They are constantly reviewing and developing their formula in order to make sure it's the best a man can get; even if that means making changes to individual ingredients or the formula as a whole. The review went on to say that the product is made in the United States in a GMP certified environment. "Rizer XL male enhancement is one of the very few supplements that have gone through formulation changes," notes the Total … Continue reading

Drugs to Prevent Alzheimer's to Be Tested in Large Trial

Posted: Published on October 13th, 2012

THURSDAY, Oct. 11 (HealthDay News) -- The latest attempt to fight the mental ravages of Alzheimer's disease involves an international study of three different drugs in people destined to develop the brain disorder. The large trial, scheduled to start next year, will assess the drugs' success in a group of people with gene mutations that practically guarantee they'll get Alzheimer's, but who do not yet have symptoms. There is no cure for the condition, which gradually robs people of their memory and their ability to live their everyday lives. The 160 American, Australian and British volunteers will likely start showing declines in memory and thinking within five years unless the drugs work, The New York Times reported. The three drugs selected for the study were among 15 submitted by pharmaceutical companies. The final choices were based on the best evidence of effectiveness and lowest risk of dangerous side effects, The Times reported. The drugs chosen are Roche's gantenerumab and two drugs made by Eli Lilly and Co., one called LY2886721 and the other called solanezumab, according to the news report. The drugs use different approaches to target beta amyloid, a protein that forms the brain plaques characteristic of Alzheimer's. "These … Continue reading
